Mazda has just set its price for the new MX-5 retractable tin top model - $24,350. The power folding hardtop requires just 12 seconds to open or close, and weight gain appears to be minimal, with a claimed penalty of just 77 pounds. Further, the automaker says that there has been no change in cargo capacity, irrespective of whether the top is up or down.
The aformentioned starting price nets buyers a Sport-trim MX-5, including power top, windows/mirrors/locks, anti-lock brakes, side airbags, and a cd player. Naturally, power comes from a 2.0-liter four generating 170 horsepower, but Mazda has differentiated retractable hardtop cars with some minor aesthetic changes - a thin chrome ring around the grille opening, different bezels in the headlights, a white-lensed third brake light, and a chrome band in the door handles.
Given the new MX-5 model’s modest premium and minimal weight gain for better sound insulation and the security of a folding hardtop, it will be interesting to see what its take rate is, as well as how the car is regarded among dyed-in-the-wool enthusiasts.

How much is that over the full soft-top version?, i'd heard that it doesn't cost much at all and is almost considered an cost option rather than a seperate model.

As far as I recall, this would be the first official hard-top mx-5 available in North America. The soft top sport trim generally goes for 23,500 - just $1000 less than the hard top. Considering how the car handles and the minimal cost bump, this would probably sell very well in the North where the winters are too cold to bother with a soft top.

Just 77 pounds? Just 12 seconds? Just 24k US? Goddamnit, I'm moving back to the mainland... NOW.

AFAIK, this is the very first tin-top convertible ever on an MX-5, isn't it? And they did it so well (pauses... waits for word on defective malfunctioning tops... oops, they're not out yet...) That's a serious blow to the competition, methinks.

I'm suprised it only gains 77 lbs! I'm liking the way this think looks over the vert, but I'm wishing for Mazda to bring a coupé version of this car to NA!
