This thing looks absolutely killer. Hopefully they keep a lot of it in tact for their production cars.

Mazda designers need a pat on the back. Discuss.

It shall be called Maserazda(Or is is Mazdarati)!!!!

Seriously, it looks like a Maserati, not that that's a bad thing. I can definitely see some ques from the Furai, looks awesome.

Awesome looking car...I especially like the front end (which looks quite aerodynamic might I add) 👍

It's just too bad the stupid auto manufacturers always end up scraping such great looking concepts and then dumb them down to the point where they are only mediocre at best :ill: Personally I'm still eager to see the new RX-7 design which should have been released 5-10 years ago

To me, it looks like what a bunch of cars and designs were trying to look like. Except all those other cars missed big time and Mazda hit the bullseye.

Ikuo Maeda designed this, the RX-8, and the 2, and while I like it, it's so awfully similar to the Infiniti Essence concept that I'm a bit disappointed. Then again, I'd rather more designs like this (and the Infiniti, and the Masers and Astons of the world they remind me of) than more attempts at the BMW/Audi/Merc current style of design.

And at least this will (hopefully) have more relevance than the Nagare when applied to production vehicles. The Furai was fantastic... the swoopy lines on the side of the Mazda5, and it's unfortunate frumpy rear-end, aren't.

I like it. Interior looks really nice as well, but concepts seem to rarely ever to carry over the whole design.

Don't know why, but I can't help think Infiniti when I see it. Stunning looking car though.

Because Infiniti was trying to get this look for the new M, but they failed.

It just looks good, even if it is a little Anime-look. Pulls it off better than the LF-A, I'll tell you that...

I love the detail of headlights. Very beautiful. When I first saw the side profile, it screams Fisker.

Anyhow I would love to see Mazda to expand their lineup, maybe a replacement of 929 💡

My favorite part is the thin silver bar than runs under the grill and up into the headlights. That is perfect. Love it.

If this was to come out anytime soon I think I would pressure my brother into get me a very, very, very deep discount for this(he works at a Mazda, Ford, and Subaru dealership)!

My favorite part is that it doesn't look like it's just unhinged its jaw and is about to swallow you whole. I hate the insane smile some Mazdas have. But this is great!

I'm having a hard time remembering a single design language that has produced so many stunning concepts that have influenced so many great production designs. This is no exception.

Those hilarious wing mirrors really aren't fooling anyone though.

Giugiaro or whatever his name is. He founded Bertone, ItaliDesign and Ghia. He was the guy behind a lot of Lamborghinis including the Miura and Countach and the Cala. He also helped with the DeLorean. As well as designing the 2010 Mustang, The Corvette Stingray Concept, BMW Nazca, Alfa Romeo Schigara, and others. But yeah, Mazda has some pretty awesome designs, too, though. :)

If it has a rotary I'll be pissed.

Absolutely fantastic looking car. And it's the most production ready concept Mazda has shown us in a while. Could this herald the return of the 929 as the Mazda9?

Thoughts of this thing being rwd based and using Ford's ecoboost V6 make me giddy like a schoolgirl.

Although I love it, I find this news rather sad. Mazda's current design language is already being replaced, and I think it never really had the chance to take-off anywhere. I was really hanging out for a Mazda sports car, based on the styling on the Furai Concept.
This though... I can see the production models of this design language blending-in with the rest of the (dull) crowd. By the time they replace the kick-ass lights, glass roof, wing mirrors, interior, etc... what will be left?

Edit: Speaking of which:

Car designer =/= design language. He also didn't have a hand in the 2010 Mustang; his 2006 concept influenced some of the design features, though. Didn't touch the Stingray Concept either, that was all in-house. Giugiaro is so great precisely because one can't nail down a specific design language from him; unlike Walter de'Silva or Ian Callum, who've been doing very similar designs for years, Giugiaro's been all over the place.

Jacoja nails it; this looks great, but in the inevitable toning-down, it'll end up with very little stand out features (though still excellent proportions, hopefully). Nagare really didn't get a chance to shine other than on the endless stream of concept cars and the (now confirmed) empty-promises of it translating to the road; a pared-back, Furai-influenced RX-7 would've been awesome. This might translate to the road cars better and easier, but it loses some of the uniqueness the last style had.

That's an unbelievably sexy looking car. It manages to have the flair of the European supercars while looking distinctly non-European. Why you would make a design like that and not produce at least a limited run halo car off it is beyond me....

I'd have to disagree with some of this. Most of the concepts under the Nagare umbrella were completely unmarketable. The influence in the production cars, however unfortunately diluted, has still made the Mazda name synonymous with attractive, attainable design. They've done a very good job in using these design studies to fuel inspirational, stand-out production cars. The current 3 being a good example; it is as close to the actual 2006 Nagare Concept that anyone above the design team could have allowed. Yes, us designers would have loved to see something more advanced, however a company as mainstream as Mazda can't afford to market such radical changes in design, especially with a super-high volume hatchback.

Which American designer/exec said it in the 60s? How progressive a design is can only be measured in if the consumer will buy it.

-edit- I knew there was something sitting in the back of my mind regarding this concept. Peter Birtwhistle, chief of design at Mazda, recently said that the company would depart from the Nagare language with a concept and design direction announced at Paris. I guess this is it.

There's a little Jaguar infused with Mazda in its design. The latest 3, 6, and RX-8 all have that off-looking smiley face. This deal looks like Mazda wants to try Zoom-Zoom with a much more elegant car. I have to say... I'm pretty excited for this car. The Mazda Shinari concept car looks outstanding. This can mean anything from changes to current Mazdas to maybe a new Mazda altogether.

Honestly, this is more like Mazda meets Jaguar. The short headlights and huge grill have Jaguar XJ-like cues. If this thing has a rotary, I do wonder about if it would have enough torque to power it. Sure want to see how this car all plays out and what cars would draw some inspiration and cues from this Shinari.
