This guy is nuts. I seriously wonder how people's lives' situations get to the point that they can afford the time to make a freaking F1 car with a million matchsticks and over a thousand tubes of glue. Seriously, do they not have to hold jobs or make money or do anything with themselves?

Cool nonetheless:

What do you do when you can't afford a million quid to buy a real McLaren 4/14 Formula 1 car? You spend almost £4,500 building one out of matchsticks, of course.

Wacky German, Michael Arndt spent 6 years building this immaculate replica in his kitchen. And all it took was 956,000 matchsticks and 1,686 tubes of glue. Of course, there's not much room left for socialising.

Thankfully, it can be broken down – very carefully – into 45 pieces for transport to various matchstick building conventions. Yes, it is insane but you have to admire the single-minded dedication/obsession.

Maybe I just don't get out to enough matchstick building conventions...

I would imagine getting splinters just sitting in it.

If that thing rubs against the carpet, just a LITTLE bit... I'm sure you can imagine the rest. JK

He should build a match stick woman next so he can finally lose his virginity.

Impressive attention to detail 👍

I'm more amazed that other people are amazed he found the time to do it. Clearly none of you have ever ventured near a Games Workshop.....

Maybe he should try match.com 💡

It's quite cool, but incredibly sad too. Still, if that's what someone wants to do with their life...

We all have our rather pointless hobbies and obsessions, how is building a car out of matchsticks any different then trying to complete a video game? You get nothing from it in the end other than a sense of accomplishment.

I think it's cool, although I don't have the patience or creativity to do that.

Thanks for some positive Joey, except we don't really have anything to show for it when finishing a game, except for achievements (whoops, PS3 dominate forum, hides).

Uh, we have achievements as well.

Achievements largely uncared for outside of the GT community. Believe me, other gamers look at us and think we're crazy.

besides, how's it different from playing with Model Trains or some other hobby that some people put thousands of dollars into?

No need. He owns an F1 car now so the women will be all over him.

 The man comes through.

Some of you might mock these guys, but this kind of talent & attention to detail is exactly what the design industry looks at.

Especially if Mattel is hiring designed for their Matchbox toy line.

This is very cool, much more involved than a model ship or building. No offense to those who build those, but this is an F1 car, 1/1. This guy is an artist for sure. What about the guy who build his own WORKING Ferrari? The guy that build the matchstick F1 car had more time on his hands to live a life I bet. The guy who built the Ferrari said it took 20,000 hours +. Neither of them are having a bright social life. Still they are both a major accomplishment.
I would love a matchstick F1 car in my house.

Mr. Scerri has plenty of friends.

And I'd love to hang out with them.

I'm more interested in this guy who made a working (read: running) 1/6th scale Chevy 327 V8

Edit: After watching the Ferrari video (which is awesome BTW), they are now equally as interesting. :p

LOL... Can someone get me a fire??? LOL that is a piece of masterpiece!!!!

This guy is nuts seriously!!! I might need him to build a cockpit for my future GT5 :) 👍
