Some people here are calling the BMW McLaren F1, McJokeHype F1. I've searched for some reviews and write-ups about this car but came out empty handed.

My question is, does this car sucked big time? I was aiming for this car back then when GT4 wasn't released yet. (Although I have not acquired this yet in the game for me to test).. Hope someone helps.

It's one of the best handling cars in the game (and one of the best-looking too) so the only problem when dealing with the big guns is the power, only 600 or so bhp. Keep waiting, it is definitely worth getting. :)

It's not a bad handlig car at all - It's just very very twitchy with a tendensy to bite when pushed...

Well I over 600hp doesn't give me too much trouble. Some write-ups influenced me in not getting this car early. The LEMANS COMPARISON writeup specifically mentioned this car together with the Esperante as project cars. And in some write-ups they called this as the BMW McJokeHype F1. Guess I have to find out for myself. Thanks anyway. Man, I love the McLaren F1. I was hoping for a road car version in GT4 but this GTR version will do.

Also, in the GT4 NTSC/J version, the bottom bumper portion is white whereas in the NTSc/UC version as I've seen in GT4's official site, the bottom portion of the bumper is red. Haven't seen pics of the Red one here in GTP so far..

I can tell you from experience that this car is not bad at all.

Some people don't like it, and for them that's just fine. :D

For me, I really like the car. 👍

For refference...
The McLaren is classified at GTRP as a B Class Super Race Car.
http://db.gtrp.de/gt4_arcade_class.php?classid=14

Compared to the competition, this car is astonishing.
I am not a fast racer, however, using the McLaren I managed to take the #1 Ring time for the Super B racers.
http://db.gtrp.de/gt4_arcade_track.php?classid=14&track=55
(BTW, take notice of how the only other McLaren time on that page is nearly 45 seconds behind me... That's a good sign that this car is unique and possibley not meant for everyone).

That in itself should be a good indincator that the McLaren just gets a bad wrap for whatever reason.

If you ask me though, I think the bad wrap comes from people who refuse to drive each car differently... Try to drive the McLaren like any other car and you will have major trouble.
Try to adjust your driving to the McLaren and you will be one faster racer. :dopey:

In terms of handling...
The McLaren is indeed one of the better handling cars. PD did a good job of showing why that "F1" is in the name. Understeer while braking and accelerating are both great. However, traction is still good enough that my "record" lap was done with 0 TCS, which is not at all my style with anything over 600 hp.

Overall, the best comparison I could make for the handling of this car is to say that it rides like a well behaved NSX racecar.
I assume most of you know about how out of control the NSXs get when fully tuned? Well this car handles more like what you would hope for the NSX.

The McLaren is a well balanced MR with low weight and high power.
I highly suggest this car makes atleast a one day visit to your garage, if for nothing else, just to be in your Arcade mode selection list.

Does this car suck?
That's going to depend on you more than anything else. :trouble:

Btw, I brought this exact subject up in the GT4 general discussion thread yesterday... Might want to see if anything has been said over there. 👍

well, I didn't like it when I had it.. only if there would be the road car, then I might have differen't opinion.. after all, it did hold the road car top speed record for a while, before Koenigsegg CCR and Bugatti stepped into the game..

A while, it held itfor years. The F1 GTR is a nice car but in terms of what it can achieve don't expect it to be faster than the group C's or LMP cars in GT4, I found it a fairer comparison racing it against the CLK-GTR and GTR-1 though which makes more sense to me since LMP's and group C's are supposed to be faster cars.

Although it's been a while...my records show I used it to win EXTREME HALL: Gran Turismo All Stars so it must be a pretty good ride! 👍 I am disappointed however in comparison to GT4 Prologue :indiff: it was a "Super" ride in that game!...O.G.

I planned to use it in All Stars but thought it wouldn't be able to win the High Speed Ring race. Maybe I'll think again...

Yeah it can win races agains the LMP's and so on with the AI driving, but if you were to hot lap all the cars, the Group C's and LMP's would hammer it.

The reason why the McLaren F1 is ragged on by a lot of people is because there are a lot of fanboys who jumped on it when they first heard about it, worship it like a god, and refuse to accept any other car as anything but crappy and slow.

Its a fantastic car. However, I felt PD held it back from its original counter-part, imo. I've seen this beautiful machine race its heart out at Laguna Seca.

But the thing in GT4 is that this car is better with the CLK-GTR and GTR-1 is because this what this car actually raced against.

If it went against the big Sauber C-9, it'd be own in the speed area. Against the R8, it'd be owned everywhere.

This car is better against the CLK-GTR and GTR-1. It only "sucks" in GT4 b/c there is a huge lack of GT1 cars from its era. The same could be said for the Lister Storm V12, but I think the Storm V12 in the game is more of the FIA GT one.

I would say that this is one of the best road holding cars in the game. Taking it round Le Mans is a great experience. I was driving using racing mediums and the car just never seems to let go in the corners no matter how much i ask of it. With all the aids off i have yet to find a car to match its cornering abilties, it totaly suits my driving style.

'Lo everybody. Just changed name (from danica_8250). Anyway thanks for the replies. Here's something for everybody....

1997 McLaren F1

Enjoy!

Well i have found the Maclaren to be a bit of a Jackel and Hyde! I got the car, turned ASM and TCS off and i was in love. it Handled superbly and i thought it could handle a bit more power. So off to BMW i went, Purchased a dustbin sized turbo and voila! I went back to the nurburgring and i was impressed untill i came to a complex set of corners, my beautifully poised car had turned into a savage! hit a bump and whoooooooo the engine revs like its intent on self detonation and sends me into manic power oversteer. I set off again and find im on tip toes the rest of the way round.

My advice/warning.......Leave it standard or Mr Hyde will be paying you a visit. :)

Get it the Maclaren F1 GTR is one the best cars to drive, wish there was the road version. If PD allowed races to be restricted to real hp numbers those LMPs would have trouble keeping that GTR off their arses. Just get the car and head to arcade mode turn up the difficulty to about 4, hopefully you will race against some good competition, but if the CLK is in there, depending on the course you'll either beat him or get your ass handed to you, with stock (realsitic hp). Next time PD should allow for realistic hp levels for all race cars, none of that qualify hp, or mod hp levels(yes the CLK-GTR hp number is the number that the road car sold to that Saudi guy got his tuned to, go figure?).

Anyway, the MacFun is awesome, it'll kick the Esperante's ass. It's a very capable car, MR drivetrain and it's length makes it almost as stable as the CLK, but be careful at the limit with it, one overzealous corner and you will pay. lol.

I think one of the reasons the McLaren isn't up to expectations is that PD modelled it on the severely penalised JGTC McLaren. In it's first season it kicked JGTC arse, but the Japanese weren't happy about europeans winning their game so they penalised and penalised and penailsed th Mclaren until it just became a back marker.

Balanced competition is in the very nature of the JGTC. Qualify in the top 3? More weight for you. Finish in the top 4? More weight for you. Set one of the three fastest laps? More weight for you. Finish 6th or lower? Less weight for you.

It's certainly possible that the McLaren simply fell victim to equalization.

I think the McLaren in GT4 falls victim to "reputation" more than anything else.

Basically, no one has really tapped into the full potential of the McLaren.

I linked some record board pages to this thread in my last post... It seems no one paid attention to them.

Go check them out.

I am not a "fast" racer but I still took the #1 spot on the record board over a truely fast competitor.

Why?
Because he was using a different car.

Fact is, the McLaren is badarse.
You just have to have the skill to control it and the will to learn how.

PD didn't down-play the McLaren... Lazy racers did that for them.

I still have to earn the car, since I haven't played in the last months, but if I win it, I'll absolutely test it out. I guess the difference in laps between the CLK-GTR and the McLaren F1 isn't much (since I won GTWC with the CLK-GTR the McLaren F1 should be possible as well if there is no big difference).

Edit: Kent, did you drive that car 100% stock and without changing gears/wings/etc.?

I used this car for a dash at le sarthe 24hr, with out chicanes, for 200 A-Spec pts.
the one in GT4 prologue was better though even though you couldnt mod cars there

Well, are you talking about the hotlap at the Ring where I took the #1 spot... No it was not stock. :p

It was the Arcade car and so I had it tuned to a full +20% hp/ -10% kg.
That left it at 723hp/ 855kg.

Very, very fast and handling like a dreamy NSX (only more stable and with more turn-in on braking and accel).

Overall the McLaren is one of my favorite cars and on a list it would easily be one of the top 5... Maybe my favorite racecar too. :dopey:

The only thing I don't like in that car is the wheels, wish I vould change them. Maybe this needs some photoshopping... but it's an excellent all-round car and much more stable than the Group C cars or LMPs. I think I'll drive it a bit tomorrow. :)

No they didn't, the modelled the BMW Fina F1 GTR that raced at LeMans and they've given it the psecs of that car too. The F1's that race in the GT500 are de-tuned and always have been, they have restrictors that are designed to drop the power down to around 500Bhp, also the F1's in the GT500 have used different bodywork to the GT1 class F1's, mostly a different choice of wings, but different nontheless. The F1 in GT4 is a GT1 spec F1, not a GT500 spec one and the only thing it's a victim to in GT4 is people comparing it to the LMP and group C cars lap times in the game.

Ok let's not get crazy, there is no Group C car the Maclaren is more stable than, none(unless you mean that Toyota 7). All of those things are just short of Formula 1 race cars, their road grip is immense, cornering speeds are borderline ridiculous and their handling is the best in the game, only the LMP's can out turn them(F1's aren't in this, those are guided missles). The Maclaren is awesome, but even the CLK-GTR has better road holding abilities, but the Mac is just soo sweet to drive.

Maybe it's my driving style then or just the fact that the McLaren corners at lower speeds and that could make it feel more stable. :)

It's either that or the fact that the Maclaren isn't as wide as the other cars, narrow long-nosed mid ship car, snap oversteer when pushed at the limit, I think that it doesn't generate as much rear downforce either, not sure about that. But something about the engine sound and the overall smoothness of it, I was just upset that there was no street version in the game, of that car and the CLK. I'm surprised they didn't include the backflip machine CLR. PD get the Maclaren '95 LM Road Car PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE, that is the one that busted the supercar topspeed, heck I still consider it the number one. Why? because all the newer ones to break Maclaren's record can't drive as well, and also pack way more hp than the Maclaren did then. None of them come close to that legendary car, and they are all ugly as sin. I hope PD includes all of them so we can drive them on the track of kings, the Nür, to prove that the "Mac" is still the king. The only car that can really compete is the S7TT, as i think that car is the reigning king of mechanical/aerodynamic grip. I hope, I hope many of the best of the supercars from 70's on up make it.
