"Rumors and conjecture will only get you so far, particularly when we're talking about the stratosphere of supercardom where speculation can disappear back into the ether from whence it came as quickly as it emerged in the first place. What we need to really anticipate the arrival of a new record-breaking hypercar is concrete evidence. And concrete evidence, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, is what we have here before us today.

The car we're talking about is the long-awaited successor to the legendary McLaren F1. Considering how thoroughly that bolide smashed all preconceived notions of what a car could do when the original hit the streets in 1992, its successor is something worth anticipating indeed. It's expected to have nearly 700 horsepower on tap, challenge the Bugatti Veyron for straight-line pace and emerge as a de-facto challenger to the Enzo replacement Ferrari is working on.

The styling is expected to take greater advantage of the skills of one Frank Stephenson, father of the modern Mini Cooper, BMW X5, Fiat 500 and countless Ferrari and Maserati models. His arrival at McLaren Automotive is said to have been a little late for him to truly leave his mark on the MP4-12C – its big brother expected to be his first clean-sheet design since moving in at Woking.

From the spy shots, we can see some distinctive common stylistic elements to the existing MP4-12C, tempered with some references to the original McLaren F1 – particularly in the shape of the greenhouse that packs a windshield that looks like it was lifted from a glass-bottom boat. A rooftop hood vent also appears to be popping up through the camouflage, with a giant exhaust pipe protruding high up through the rear (like a Pagani), with what looks like the biggest underbody diffuser we've seen yet.

The overall shape also looks longer than the MP4-12C, presumably to accommodate an engine packing 50% more cylinders than its eight-pot kid brother. With the V12 F1 expected to arrive around the same time as the Ferrari F70, it looks like Maranello and Woking are gearing up for once heck of a high-stakes grudge match. "

"The Thai edition of CAR magazine has placed on its cover this month a speculative rendering of the McLaren F1 successor.

(They use the term "speculative rendering" here, that means that these renders are very probably not official)

Styled by McLaren design chief Frank Stephenson, previous reports describe the new McLaren, codenamed P12, as being very futuristic which does appear to be in line with the CAR renderings.

The P12 will be powered by a heavily upgraded version of the MP4-12C's 3.8 liter twin-turbo V8 engine generating around 800 hp (597 kW / 811 PS) and further boosted by a kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) that could generate an additional 120 hp (89 kW / 122 PS).

(This contradicts with the autoblog.com article , where they said that the car will have only around 700 hp horsepower!)

Incorporating vast amounts of carbon fiber in its construction just like the 12C, the P12 will weigh around 1,140 kg (2513 lbs).

The new McLaren will be revealed at the 2012 Monaco Grand Prix in May, possibly a private event for special clientele. The McLaren F1 successor will be reportedly launched in 2014 with a starting price of around €750,000.

In related news, CAR is also reporting a MP4-12C Spyder, which they also rendered, will be launched in 2012."
 
Nothing will ever succeed the F1.........Nothing!

Agreed, its still the best super car ever made. I don't think the veyron counts as its main aim is to be fast in a straight line where as the F1 was designed to be good at everything
 
Not to mention the Veyron sounds like a Vacuum and the F1 sounds like a V12 Supercar :D

F40? Anyone? I would have the F1 slightly below the F40, but I completely agree that McLaren will probably not produce a better car than the F1.

there is no doubt the F40 is a great car but the F1 is in a league of its own

It's all matter of opinion, I guess. I will always like the F40 better for it's raw performance and uncompromising design, but the F1 is also one of the most amazing cars ever built. At any rate, McLaren have got to do something really epic this time to even come close to the F1, and I don't think they will. I just hope they try to do their own thing, like with the F1, rather than compete head on with Ferrari, like with the MP4-12C.

I mistook those renders as shots of the MP4-12C. It needs to be a bit more dramatic, or at least more different. That car isn't extreme looking enough to succeed the F1.
 
But the original F1 wasn't that extreme either..

True, but it was an original design. That just looks like a toughened MP4-12C. I think the new one should be either aggressive and have a lot of presence or be very subtle and pretty. And not look like the MP4-12C, did I mention that...Not that I don't like the MP4-12C, it's very pretty.

I agree.. This one is subtle and pretty, but like you said, it looks like the 12C.. But these are only renders so, we could be in for a suprise.. :D
 
Middle seating position is one of my fav things about the old F1...

Same here, middle seating is one of the things that made the original stand out, why they don't continue the trend... Probably because it's a little uncomfortable getting in the car...

Silly tough, as this is Gordon Murray's base for building cars more or less, and it is a great touch, especially for supercars.
