McLaren have been excluded from the 2007 and 2008 Formula One World Championships.

According to www.planetf1.com, the Woking team, who faced the FIA's World Motor Sport Council for the second time in Paris on Thursday after new evidence came to light, were found guilty of using Ferrari's information in this year's championship.

The punishment is their exclusion from this year and next year's World Championships - although it remains unclear whether this means the drivers' and/or constructors' championship.

More to follow...

PlanetF1 currently says this:

Breaking news from Paris: Claims that McLaren have been thrown out of both the 2007 and 2008 championships may be premature. It's now believed that, although the World Council has proposed the team is expelled, the exact nature of their punishment is still being discussed..

Yes :ill:

If McLaren are booted out, they may well deserve it (if they have genuinely benefited by cheating), but it means that this whole season is, in my view, utterly destroyed. Every race, every result rendered totally pointless...

This could also potentially destroy McLaren, not to mention F1 itself.

Agreed, it would be nice to know the extent of how many knew about the data and such...either way...it seems clear McLaren are going to be hit with something and I can still see it being big..

Juan Pablo Montoya? :ill:

If McLaren is going to be excluded from the 2007 and 2008 Formula One World Championships, what about Alonso and Hamilton?

italiaracing.net reports that McLaren loose all team points from 2007, are prevented from scoring points in 2008, but that the drivers points are not affected.

Well I can't see any reason why they would be banned too. I'm sure they'd find another team.

The FIA (who have more Ferrari reps than anyone else)
"There are more Ferrari representatives on the World Council than anybody else."
From Jackie Stewart. I'm appalled tbh, they've shot themselves in the foot, and of course Ferrari get their way as usual, if McLaren have cheated then fine, but what about the times Ferrari have had illegal car parts?

I'm going to be super harsh and call them the Ferrari Intenatinoal d'Automobile.

Such a shame, it was a good season, but back to Ferrari dominating for years on end now. They could've found a way around it, imo.

I get the feeling that all reads as super harsh, but it doesn't benefit the real people of F1, the Fans, we make the sport. Without us the sport doesn't exist.

BBC has confirmed that McLaren will lose all constructor points in 2007, but the drivers will not be effected. McLaren will also receive a fine of $100 million.

I'm shell shocked! Poor Ron Dennis, last year he didn't win any races and now when he won alot of them he's disqualified. He just isn't lucky at all.

What bugs me most is sure, McLaren could lose all points and drivers will be unaffected, but Ferrari will still complain because they'll still be racing and in the same car.

If McLaren are stripped of all Constructor's points, it won't be all bad... Firstly, we don't have to hear any more of the appeal over Constructor's points in Hungray, and secondly, both drivers surely must now be free to race each other to the flag in all the races remaining this season. No more races like Monaco - "We ordered Hamilton not to attack Alonso for the good of the Constructor's championship".

$100 million = £49.2 million.

Pros - Drivers unaffected, McLaren allowed to continue racing
Cons - It's still damaging to the sport, and Ferrari will no doubt complain.

Well, I'm sorry for Ron too, but to be perfectly frank, who cares about the bloody constructor's championship anyway? Really, who cares about it?

Ferrari have had their say and have pushed as far as they can to win the title by default - so I hope they shut up now and stop whining. Let the drivers do the talking now - PLEASE!

Ah and Alll constructors points aswell.
Million $? Whats that in £?
£49.2 million, apparently...

This means BMW are 3rd and Reanualt are 3rd ? what happens to the car numbering and garage order now .....

just glad that lewis has a chance to win the title ....also I would like to know what new info they have that made them decide this

It could've been worse, some might say McLaren were lucky.

It does raise some more points though.

1) So McLaren did use Ferrari info on their car?
2) For how long and have they got to change any thing?
3) Could someone like Ron Dennis resign over this?

Drivers' Champion gets car 1 and pitbox 1, with teammate getting car 2. Numbers and pitlane order then progresses down the Constructors' Championship final table.

I thought the majority of the case was that they had the documents, rather than they used them in there design.

Thanks TM for the amount in £'s.
Whats £49.2M to Mclaren though?

still doesn't seem to be over for McMerc

The FIA World Motor Sport Council has disqualified McLaren from the 2007 constructors' championship and imposed the largest fine in motorsport history – but Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso can continue to vie for the drivers' crown.

After nine hours of deliberations at the hearing in Paris, the 26-member World Council panel decided to punish the Woking-based team for breaking the sporting regulations by possessing confidential Ferrari data.

But while the decision to exclude McLaren from the constructors' contest hands that title to Ferrari, McLaren's drivers have escaped a penalty.

Hamilton and Alonso's battle for the world championship will therefore continue unaffected in the remaining four rounds.

“The WMSC has stripped Vodafone McLaren Mercedes of all constructor points in the 2007 FIA Formula One World Championship and the team can score no points for the remainder of the season," the FIA said in a statement.

“Furthermore, the team will pay a fine equal to $100m, less the FOM income lost as a result of the points deduction.

“However, due to the exceptional circumstances in which the FIA gave the team’s drivers an immunity in return for providing evidence, there is no penalty in regard to drivers’ points."

McLaren will also have to present its 2008 car for examination by the FIA before the start of next season.

“The WMSC will receive a full technical report on the 2008 McLaren car and will take a decision at its December 2007 meeting as to what sanction, if any, will be imposed on the team for the 2008 season,” read the statement.

does this mean that they could deduct point from McMerc before the '08 season starts? and make them start like with a negative number of points or something?

Even more confirmation:

Phew. That's the lesser of (many) evils... But it's still a very bad thing. It's a bad move for Ferrari, reputation-wise, it's a bad move for F1, fan-wise and it's a bad thing (not move, obviously) for McLaren, for obvious reasons. Am I the only one who sees McLaren stop bothering with updates for the rest of the season, instead focusing on the MP/4-23?

EDIT: The way I get it, BMW(something), it means they'll thoroughly check the car before the season.

On an even better note, Super Aguri just went up a place in the constructors :D

There's an interesting FAQ on the BBC website.

Being a ferrari fan and all, im happy that Ferrari will win the Constructors champion......but it just now seems like a hollow victory
