Melbourne Motor Show '08

Carbon fibre can be painted to look normal so what's the problem? If it were up to Holden I bet the Commdore would still weigh 1300-1500kg due to no need for safety things.

It's not the look of carbon fibre I am not fond of (I would paint it anyway), it is the properties of the material, especially used in large quantity's on mass produced vehicles. It is prone to fatigue and cracking from long term vibrations (just look how race cars monoques crack up), it is weak across the grain and it's tensile nature gives little warning when it breaks under load (which leaves a big sharp mess), good for paticular situations and will help in areas for weight reduction.

I can't imagine cost of carbon fibre production coming down enough to replace much of a mass productions body parts.

The General is far more likely to stick with fiberglass on the 'Vette for the time being, its simply more cost-effective and keeps the pricing of the car in that $40-50K range that has made it such an incredible success.

The VE cars do need to lose a little weight, but by comparison, the CTS which is about the same size clocks in around 4000 lbs too. They all need to get cut down a bit, or better yet, GM needs to debut some overall smaller cars to fill-out the bottom end. We're still due for the Delta II cars, not to mention Alpha, and the rest of Epsilon II.

But yeah, I don't expect much from Holden other than maybe a solidified Crewman or some kind of semi-official Torana. The Monaro, as Lutz has said, is dead. The Camaro has officially replaced it.

But hey... Don't the Ford Orion cars debut in Melbourne too? I wanna see the new Falcon and such...

GT5 Prologue (Cant wait to have a go at this, also a huge Sony prize to be won)

As long as Daniel doesn't show up, I should have a reasonably decent chance at winning a competition for once.

I hope Lutz's announcement is a production ready Torana

Shouldn't the Holden concept and new HSVs supposedly getting unveiled be on the list? I wish I could go down and race/meet you all.

That concept is 4 years old now so that should have given them plenty of time to take some of the vectra out of it :)

Oh, the Vectra is already done:

So, if the Torana comes around, I'd expect it to not be a radical departure from the VE, but of course have some worldly design influences baked-in once again... Given that the car will spin off variants not just for Opel/Vauxhall, but also for Pontiac, Cadillac, and possibly Buick as well. Maybe even Chevrolet too if the Nova fans can somehow get their way...

Oh, and did I mention that it may throw itself under the Solstice/Sky/GT crowd as well?

We're due to see the first Alpha car soon, problem is, even the GM people admit that work really hasn't started on it yet. We may see a "concept," but we're still about three years off seeing one on the street.

It's amazing how every single year Holden comes to the Melbourne Motor Show and just blows the doors off the entire show.

I MEAN LOOK AT IT.

That's the first Holden I'd actually buy in a long, long time.

My only beef with it is it runs on flex fuel, that's bio-fuel right? Bad stuff. Anyway, I admit I was hoping for something wilder, instead we just got a 2-door Commodore again. Still is very cool though :D

Did the previous GTS-R (based on the Monaro shell) ever got sold? I remember briefly seeing photos of the 330-or-so KW monster a few years ago but haven't heard any information since.

what on earth? the previous GTS-R was based on the VT Commodore (UK Only) before that there was the VS GTS-R (the yellah one),there never was a Monaro GTS-R.

There was however an HRT 427 which was based on a Monaro of which only 2 were built. #1 was a development/production car which is in private hands #2 was a concept car(dont know how that works!) which holden own.

Then there was 4 Monaro 427 racers

Unfortunately he's right.

Though it was never a production car. They were going to start a One-Make series in the Middle East with them IIRC, then if the demand was high enough sell them in other markets as track-only/one-make series racers.

But they were never EVER going to be production cars.

that was a "cut n shut" it looked like a similar to a monaro but wasnt monaro based.

Just thought I'd try and point out some of the other notable cars at Melbourne.
Bolwell Nagari- powered by a supercharged Toyota 3.5L V6, this is practically an Aussie supercar due to its 900kg kerb weight.
BolwellNagari_Dawn2.jpg

E-vade track car- powered by a twin turbo Nissan V6, no shortage of power. Ranked in the same league as KTM X-Bow.

There are more, I just wanted to show these 2.

I wish Bolwell had of just stayed back in the 70s. That thing is hideous, and if it's not made of fibreglass it's not a real Bolwell.

I know it's ugly, and they used a Japanese engine. At least Australia has a high performance sports car now though in the same league as high-end supercar makers.

^Good lord that car is butttttttttttttttt ugly

Man Dats Hawt!

That Torana is awesome 👍 That would instantly be my first choice if I was looking for a car in that range, whether it be good or not.
