If you look at my stats, you'll see I'm not a big topic starter. But I think this one should have been made long ago. So without further ado...

Memo to SONY:

THANK you very much for supporting Kazunori Yamauchi and Polyphony Digital in their work to produce GT5. No doubt, the money is rolling in from holiday sales, and will continue to do so solidly through the beginning of next year.

HOWEVER... surely by now, you have become aware of a few complaints. Many fans are disgruntled. A number of games have already been returned. Simply running the game with our PS3s net connected caused problems. I'll discuss two of these, which are main issues with the fans.

Online: you may have been caught off guard with how big a drain GT5 is on PSN resources, but you need to get this sorted, especially if Polyphony implements the online structures we expect them to, with online race building tools, league and season play. You need to have a Playstation Network in place to handle this when it develops.

Meddling with and making demands of Polyphony: many of us hated how you forced GT PSP on Polyphony, causing work to stop on GT5 for a period of time. And forcing the implementation of 3D on GT5 has apparently hurt the performance of the game. And this is especially bad considering that very few of us are buying 3D TVs just yet, and may not for some years. This should have been OPTIONAL, not required of GT5 as a whole. The graphics and performance are even worse than in GT5 Prologue. And there are other matters which have taxed Polyphony's time and resources, and hurt the quality of GT5, not the least of these are the inclusion of Standard cars and tracks. Yes, we asked for the moon. Kazunori did what he could, and ported assets from GT4 and PSP, but many fans aren't happy with having two levels of quality in this game.

Okay, so the money is rolling in now. Support Polyphony Digital.

They need modelers more than anything, to my estimation. Fund them so they can hire these people. We would like to see extra content at some point. Those of us dissatisfied with the Standard cars and tracks would like to see these replaced with Premium versions. Many of us would like to see the track list expanded. And we expect a much better Gran Turismo 6.

I know expanding a network infrastructure is expensive, but this needs to be done if you want to keep selling games. Give Polyphony's online team the support and resources they need to realize a good online game environment.

To me, one big issue is STOP MEDDLING. Don't force side projects on Polyphony, like GT PSP, which was intended by Kazunori to be released after GT5. Don't push fringe technology on us like 3D, when very few of us will even be able to use it. Let Kaz and Polyphony do their job. We will reward you with lots of money.

Memo to Kazunori-san:

I am very grateful for Gran Turismo 5. Many of us are, and are having the drive of our lives. But it has issues.

Single Player offline mode is much too small, and to make matters worse, it has been split into A-Spec and B-Spec Modes. While in GT4 they worked together, and B-Spec could be enjoyed or ignored, and was very useful in endurance races for many of us, making B-Spec a separate mode is a strange idea. Many of us don't like it at all and resent being pushed into playing it. I understand your reasoning, but I personally think the way it was implemented could have been better. For that matter, the range of tracks used in Single Player Mode is surprisingly limited, which makes the game seem even smaller and more repetitive. I understand that you wanted Online Mode to be very large and comprehensive, with lots of events and user generated events. But not only is the PSN not up to this demand right now, many of us can't race online at all. A-Spec Mode should have been much larger, even bigger than it was in GT4, which was the greatest game in the series in many eyes. Single Player A-Spec Mode needs to be expanded greatly, with many more events, and using all of the tracks. Using the Course Maker to generate tracks is fine, but your team did some marvelous work, and I'd like to see all of it.

The economy is very stingy compared to previous games. It would be fine if we could win prize cars endlessly as before, or could race for prizes and experience points online, but we can't yet. It could use some adjustment.

On prize cars, I think some changes are in order. Many of them don't make much sense. They should all be greatly valued, and all or almost all should be useful in subsequent events.

The Experience Point system makes no sense to many of us, and seems to be an unnecessary obstacle to force us to race more. It walls many of us off from parts of the game until we unlock them, which once again makes a small game seem even smaller. And since there are so few events, "grinding" for points becomes boring and frustrating for many. Personally, I think adding this redundant structure was unnecessary, and not all that well thought out.

The used car lot is a source of frustration to many of us as well. While a few of us refuse to have anything to do with Standard cars, the rest of us like or even love them. I do, I think they're fantastic. However, the used lot is way too small, and we are often forced to wait for some time for a car or truck we want to use in a certain event. It really should be expanded, and some of the ideas kicked around here used for it, such as laying deposits to hold cars wanted, or notices sent when a certain vehicle is available. Or even a certain color.

On that topic, the Paint Shop needs to be overhauled. A Paint Shop with no paint colors of its own is just bizarre. At the very least, it should have a range of basic colors available. Collecting paint chips is still a good idea, because cars have a very wide range of exotic, unique, high quality finishes.

I love Standard cars, but others do not. One thing which would help out a great deal with them would be just a few changes:

  • Give Standard cars a hood view to replace the missing cockpit view, unless an interior view is coming for them, such as the black borders of the PSP cars.
  • Give us the standard wheels of GT4. In addition, provide whatever customizations you can, such as nose splitters to go with the rear wings.
  • Re-skin them with higher resolution textures.
  • Give them high beam headlights for night driving.
  • Perhaps fix the lesser quality models imported from GT3, or wherever they are from.
I would also like to see Standards be allowed to be used in Photo Mode locations. The images taken so far of most Standard cars reveal models of very high quality and beauty.

I have some personal requests.

Please port over all the tracks from previous Gran Turismos, and provide them as DLC. I would also like to see all the missing cars from the previous games, brought up to Standard... standards. I'm sure you're well aware that many of us also want additional Premium cars and tracks as DLC at some point, historical as well as fantasy tracks.

I would like to see Race Modification provided for all Premium cars. If at all possible, I'd like to see it for Standards as well. I would prefer a few choices of liveries for our cars, as you did so marvelously in GT2. And if possible, I would greatly enjoy having some sort of Livery Editor added at some point, as creating race cars in "that other game" is pure joy.

Work closely with SONY to get the online system you envisioned for GT5 in place as soon as you can, because it sounds like the greatest online racing structure for any racing game.

I would like the game patched to disable features we don't want or can't use: namely, 3D. Hopefully, this will improve performance. I'm hoping that the graphics will be improved to the level of Prologue, at least.

I'm still urging you to make all driver views adjustable.

Please implement all the tuning features of the previous games. Not having access to brake upgrades at all is baffling. We desperately need access to the gear ratios in racing transmissions. And it would be very nice to have saves for our tuning and modifications, and more than three of them.

Urge SONY to fund the hiring of more modelers, and others as you need them. And force them to leave you and your team alone so you can focus on making Gran Turismo what it should be, the best racing series in gaming.

EDIT: one more thing. Look to the bot A.I. I know it's been improved a lot, but they still slam on the brakes rather than drive like people. :D

And one more personal request. Could you add the Time Trial (tweaked)/Mercedes/BMW demo physics as an option? Even if it meant fewer cars, I really loved it.

They wanted only 500 cars and he said a thousand! Damn you SONYYYYY!!! Can't you see PD is already overworked as it is!!!

Great MEMO.

I do support you. The used car dealer is brilliant, just need to be bigger!

And the paint shop is great as it is. But for the rest. I'm all with you.

Here here! I'd love to see more tracks, and would also love weather and day/night changes offered on more tracks, especially the world circuits.

In the future, I'd also like LESS NASCAR, please. The US has much more entertaining forms of motorsport (give us some off road races, so those trucks PD creates actually have some use other than AN event) to choose from.

I'd love to see the full return of the Racing Modification, rather than just 15 cars. The RM feature in GT and GT2 was epic, and sadly missed since. This feature, however, I'd gladly trade for a livery editor, so long as some of the opitons are historically acurate and not some generic-generated skin (i.e. fantasy sponsors, etc).

Good job threatening them with the issue of games being returned. I'm sure they're suffering sleepless nights over that totally negligible percentage while they count their millions and upgrade everything in their houses to gold-plated versions of the same object.

Did you actually email or send this to Sony and PD?
Actually, I was going to post this over at the Official Playstation boards, since the bigwigs tend to peek in there quite a bit. But an email is sure a good idea.

Oh NO you didn't! Not... THE KEV!! NOOOO!!!!

That look is just full of awesome.

I'm definitely more of a DTM, BTCC, ALMS, Supercar kind of guy. I don't think Kaz has turned up his nose at them, and we'll just have to wait. But more noise on all your items is in order.

Good job threatening them with the issue of games being returned.
Well... you know, no one likes losing sales. And who knows how many that is? Most of those guys could be fibbing. But I have to think that a few people did go out and get a 360 and Forza 3 instead, and no lost sales are good. Not to mention if game stores are getting a big load of returned GT5s. Those will hurt further early sales. But on all this stuff, we'll see.

Anyhow, on with that dreaded life thing... :p

LOL you really hate this 3D feature huh? Stereoscopic 3D isn't anything revolutionary and doesn't tax the system if it is OFF. When you do turn on the 3D feature it just switches the video to display two images in a lesser quality (barely looks HD in 3D, looks to be sub720p). The 3D feature is cool and I use it often with my wheel for realism sim racing, and switch back to regular mode for Bspec for better resolution since I don't stare at the Bspec driver parading around much in clunky 3d glasses. Just don't knock it until you try it, and I don't think it harms the system/game resources at all when it is off. It is just an extra video mode, like 480p60/720p60/1080i-p60. That's like telling them to erase the 480p textures from the game cause no one uses that video mode cause no one has cheap ass tvs right? *facepalm*

Half of your rant sounds rather selfish if anything. I do agree with the sidetracking with GT PSP and the puny size of Aspec. I also agree that Bspec is rather pointless (especially having to do twice or more as many laps and less prize money without a fast forward button). If the prize cars were better, it might be worth it, but the prize cars given are mostly junk that we have no real use for. Bspec was a great aid in GT4 in endurance races where you might need to take a bathroom break, trip to the store, go to work, or whatever else real life throws at you, you just turn it on midrace and let it drive a few laps for you. I would also like more tracks and premium cars through DLC. A lot of these standard cars are just ported from previous games and it's obvious there wasn't much time spent on a car list when they are just upscaled skinned ports. The small track list is getting old very fast. It would just be nice if we can build tracks and race on them with fellow online racers. The used car lot is really annoying (size). It did take me forever to find a truck to race (I was level 20 by then), and now I been looking for a Formula Gran Turismo for about a week now with no luck. Increasing the size of the used lot may help in finding these cars. Everytime I refresh the lot I usually bump into the same 'rare' cars over and over (how's that for random?!), but never seem to see what I look for. The down payment to hold a used car that you can't yet afford is a great idea too. This would prevent having to do the easter egg hunt again for it. I am sure there are more odd things that should be changed but I cant think right now.

LOL. Did you write this before or after your letter to Santa Claus?

Man some people. The OP made a very well and thought out letter that addresses a lot of issues and you guys come in here and deficate from your mouths or should I say fingers?

Nice posts.👎

You just repeated everything the OP said, while saying he sounds selfish. Ok...anyway...he (we) have the right to be selfish, we paid for it.

I myself love the game and don't really have anything to complain about as I'm confident everything will be addressed in time. The life cycle of this title is probably 37 years, so I'm sure there will be time for PD to get to everything.

Before you send it, tell them that if our demands aren't met, they can say goodbye to all their tires.

Edit: Also add in that they have 24 hours.

[*]Give Standard cars a hood view to replace the missing cockpit view.

YES, DEFINITELY.
I need the help of all of you gtplanet members, be sure to tweet yamahuchi about this!!!
It's important! And he reads the tweets we send to him almost every day!
If many different people tweets him about HOOD view, he will SURELY listen to us!!!!! Come on!

Very well put, covered all the bases and put in a postive tone. It just needs to be acknowledged at least by someone high up in Sony or PD if its ever seen

You forgot about the shifting/clutch issue.

The clutch issue is one of, if not the biggest problems for G25/G27/Fanatec users.

I would be perfectly happy with everything staying the way it is, if they fixed the poor clutch implementation.

Add that to the list...

;)

Do they really check the forums? Either way I think the forums is a way to go just because it means more exposure and possibly harder to bluntly ignore.

And definitely email... one this long will probably get screened out early on in the process but it sure doesn't hurt to try.

I am not so sure about your 3D portion though... are you sure that hurts the non 3D performance? I thought the 3D hit to performance only kicked in when 3D was utilized resulting in a huge framerate drop and a much lower resolution... when 3D is not in use I think the game runs just like it would if a 3D option wans't there at all...

A wrote letter will do the job, they pay more attention to "physical" opinions, work for me since I wrote to Project Aces and got a reply form Keiki Kobayashi (a couple of years ago).

Great post, I totally agree on all points.

The most likely reason GT5 isn't perfect and was 6 years in the making was due to corporate bureaucracy. I'd bet they would've been done years ago if some yahoo at the top hadn't decided to implement this and that at the last second.

Also had they not had to optimize the graphics for 3D I'd imagine they could've made the tracks look better. I'm personally not a fan of the textures that they use for the tracks, everything looks too clean and sterile. I honestly think the tracks in GT4 looked more realistic; they had a gritty quality to them and they looked dirty and used.

Other than the GT PSP issue (really, PD showed it off very shortly after GT4, with mention of a goal for it to be released well before GT5), I agree with most everything here. Maybe not the Standards stuff, but that's not about the graphics, just about what's possible due to the their model make-up. It covers most all the bases for the most common complaints about the game so far. And since we have no idea what might be planned for GT5 for the next year or so (or for the total time until GT6, whenever that'll be), it would be useful for PD to get an idea of what the series enthusiasts really desire 👍

The lack of leaderboards is an odd one right now, anyways. Having them incorporated like Prologue would give PD a direct link to the ranked popularity of certain models. It'd help figure out which cars can be upgraded to current-generation levels of detail, with users actively helping with that decision. We'd all get a say... at least those online ;).

The 3D implementation certainly seems to have negatively affected GT5... but on the plus side, they've got it figured out for GT6, which gives them a head-start for that game, plus more people will own 3D-capable TV's by then. So it's a long-term positive, which is what a lot of people have pointed out about other features in GT5, too. Hmmmm...

Well said.

I would LOVE to read some reply from Polyphony.

This is how it would probably read:

Dr. Mr. Tenacious D., we appreciate your support of our product Gran Turismo 5. Rest assured we take your letter very seriously and we will file it with all the other letters of support, never to be looked at again.

Obviously I'm paraphrasing, but I think you get the idea. Sony and PD could care less, unfortunately.

Thats nice and all but as far as GTPSP. I'm a PSP gamer and i was happy with GTPSP and hope to see more of it in the future. Sony would be silly not to release another handheld GT game. There is a market for it. Unless you saw the staff and teams for both games there is no way to tell how GTPSP impacted GT5 development.

Man some people. The OP made a very well and thought out letter that addresses a lot of issues and you guys come in here and deficate from your mouths or should I say fingers?

Nice posts.👎

Look, it's a well written LONG letter. But.....

1. The first half of the letter is pointless. SONY is a giant mega corporation. If you had some kind of boycott or a million signatures on a petition maybe they would change the way they manage their company but one letter? even a thousand letters won't do anything.

SONY is the corp side not the creative side. They only care about the bottom line. You can appeal to PD to push back against SONY but trying to appeal to SONY is a waste of time.

So get rid of the whole first half.

2. Why does he mention B-Spec in this letter. I like B-Spec just the way it is and so do many others. It makes the letter sound like a personal wish list.

3. Many of the request will never happen because they involve changes to the A-Spec campaign which many people have already played. If they change something then I'm sure those who already finished part of the game will be annoyed to find that things are easier/harder/better for others.

I suggest you ask for one or two CRUCIAL changes.
