Originally a successful independent tuner that modified and raced Mercedes-Benz machines, AMG was purchased by the Daimler Group and became an integral part of Mercedes-Benz, becoming the company's in-house tuning division. Not only did AMG tune Mercedes-Benz engines for increased performance, the first actually designed and built high-performance engines from the ground up. One of its more impressive creations was the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG, based on Mercedes-Benz's entry-level C-Class.
The car could hardly be called "entry level" after AMG dropped a monstrous 6.2-liter naturally-aspirated DOHC V-8 under its hood, one that cranked out a head-snapping 451 HP and 442.6 ft-lb of torque. This allowed the car to dash to 60mpg in about 4.5 seconds. Combined with a specially-tuned 7-speed automatic transmission, this C-Class could chase down bona fide sports cars without breaking a sweat. The suspension and brakes were thoroughly reworked to handle the extra power, which resulted in a slightly stiffer ride, but provided gobs of grip through corners.
Starting with the 204 series models, AMG added a bit more spice to its cars' appearance by incorporating a hood with a pore pronounced power bulge to help accommodate the larger engine, wider fenders, aerodynamic front and rear bumpers and side skirts.
Thanks to AMG, the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG felt and acted more like a supercar than a family sedan, and got the blood pumping of hardcore driving enthusiasts all over the world.
