Metal or wood?

which did you use or would you use to build your cockpit? It seems alot of people use wood or some form of particle board/MDF. I'm trying to plan something out and decide where to start. I'm thinking wood might be a bit lighter (can't leave my cockpit in the living room, have to put it in the basement when I'm done) but square steel tubing may be much less bulky (don't want to bang the walls all up on my way to the basement) I'm very good with a welder (auto mechanic) but also very handy with woodwork as well, so either one will be easy to work with. I'm hopeing to build a cockpit that incorporates g27 inverted pedals, armrest for the shifter, and maybe even an e-brake, but like I said, It has to be able to be put away. I'll probably make the seat disconnect from the rest to ease in that. Anyway, any opinions on materials, square steal tubing or wooden?

The PVC or equivalant tubing is light an sturdy enough.
Easy enough to move and likely not to mark walls, as the corners are curved.
There are a number of these posted, I'll find a post and put the link in.
Somebody else might beat me to it.

This is just an option you may have overlooked. 👍

Up and down a flight of stairs every time you want to drive? With all the stuff you want to incorporate it’s going to really suck moving this rig around.

Have you considered possibly getting a dedicated monitor and leaving it in the basement? Even if you need your PS3 for your home theater it would be easier to move the console when you want to drive?

Another option to consider.

I have considered that, but I've got a brand new 46" Panasonic plasma in the living room and a great Yamaha surround setup.....I'm thinking if I make the seat detach, as well as the the steering column detach from the pedal area I could take it apart in 3 peices. I'd use square different sized square tubes that slide into one and other and use a large wing-nut type bolt at each connection similar to what you would see on a weight lifting bench. I don't know if you can visualize what I mean. If I get it done and it works out I'll post pics for sure. If it doesn't work out I'll hang my head and just pretend I never tried, lol.

My rig has steel, aluminum, and carbon fiber. No wood.
I use metal components simply because its stronger and it doesn't occupy much volume/space.

I have a steel frame with some aluminum parts to lighten it up. And now my uncle,
an aircraft/aerospace engineer, is helping me build carbon fiber parts at no expense :)
I currently have CF Shifting mount and Pedal rest. I call it my LamboRIGni Superleggera! :D

In months time, it'll be completely CF. Hopefully.
