None of your business
I just bought Metallica's newest album "Death Magnetic" about an hour ago. I just have two words to say: 🤬 YEAH!

I've heard that the album is sort of "In between" "...AJFO" and the "Black Album," and I would have to sort of agree. It seems like that, with a very small amount of Load/Reload in it as well. Just a little amount, not too much.

This album also seems reminisent of Metallica's early days, with quite a bit of the style of the first three albums in it as well. One thing that kind of bugs me is James Hetfield's voice, but it's inevitable that your voice changes as you get older and you can't sing the way you used to.

What i like:
*The drums actually sound like DRUMS again!
*Guitar solo's are back with a vengeance.
*It actually sounds like they cleaned it up and produced it properly (Unlike St. Anger.)
*It's fast in quite a few songs.

What I don't like:
James voice.

So other than James' vocals, this album kicks 🤬 9.5/10

Also go today for my old man, but slapped it on my iPod for good measure, so far from what I've listened to its good. Just need to settle with a pot of tea and give a good old listen all the way through.

Of all te tracks, my favourites are probably The Unforgiven III, The Judas Kiss, Suicide & Redemption, The Day That Never Comes and All Nightmare Long; fully half of the album. Everything else is also great, with the exception of My Apocalypse, which just doesn't work for me.

However, after scouring my town for a copy yesterday morning, I was informed that Univeral hadn't actually sent the copies to the couriers who deliver them, and that I'd have to wait until Monday (my town is entirely dependent upon the university for its survival and the term ends and all on-campus students have to be out within the next fiteen minutes). Now that I'm home, I'll probably get a copy down here, but I can only conclude that despite - or maybe because of - the fact that Death Magnetic is probably Universal's biggest release of the year, yet they cannot be arsed to ship it, they are staffed exclusively by monkeys.

The Judas Kiss is by far the best track.

James sounds like a cheap imitation of James now, lol. On the first couple tracks I think he sounds like Weird Al if Weird Al did metal, lol.

The guitar shredding melts my face off. The guys don't sound like they have lost a beat.

Awesome CD.

Um ok rumple, wtf is with that avatar? rofl. I have yet to really pick a favorite track, but so far the one i like the most is "That was just your life"

Anyways, it seems like the guys are returning to a track order structure similar to their 2nd, 3rd, and 4th albums.

A fast hard track as the first, which has a little clean guitar in the very first part, just like "Fight fire with fire" with RTL and "Battery" with MOP. sot so sure about "Blackened" in AJFO, but that one's still fast as hell.

Then a slow melodic 4th track, just like "Fade to black", "Welcome home(Sanitarium)", and "One" on "RTL", "MOP", and "AJFO" respectively.

Then there is always a instrumental near the end of the disc, just like "The call of ktulu", "Orion(Best instrumental ever IMHO)", and "To live is to die" on "RTL", "MOP", and "AJFO" respectively.

Finally had a listen to it, the tracks are rather hit or miss and I can not stand the way James sounds now. Either something happened with his voice or the sound mixing was crap during the recording. I do like how they went back to at least having instruments that sound like instruments, unlike St. Anger where they sounded like they were using trash cans and keyboards. I need to give it another listen and see but so far I say 5/10.

I like nearly all the songs but definitely my favorite is Broken, Beat, & Scarred.

James' vocals kill this album. If he just did not sing anymore it would actually be really good. Reminds me of a mix between Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets. My favorite song is "Suicide & Redemption" mainly because James is not singing. "The Day That Never Comes" starts out horrible but after James quits singing it gets really good. At this point I honestly think they should just stop making albums or simply fire James.

I love this album. Playing it on Guitar Hero 3 aswell now:D

But gotta agrree James' vocals :ouch:
Maybe he should start drinking again.

I am listening to the new cd as I type this.

Let me start out by saying that I am not a Metallica fan, except for their big hits (The Unforgiven, Master of Puppets, One, Enter Sandman, Fuel etc...). In fact, I think they are terribly over rated. On that note, I like what I hear so far. I really like the vocals. The music is good and grabs your attention. I've never been a big fan of Lars' drumming, but it seems a little different in this album.

I'll report back when I've finished the album.

I truly don't see people's gripe with the vocals. There's absolutely nothing wrong with them... They're not spectacular but they're certainly not bad. :odd:

I guess I was never a Metallica fan other than their well known hits... But I really missed the memo on what so good about there new stuff. I here people raving about it and it reminds me of when SOAD new stuff came out... garbage.

Personally, I don't find it bad at the slightest. Deffinitely feels like they had a few sessions of drinking a few, listening to their older material and saying "We were awesome. What the **** happened?" Only gripe on my side? "Unforgiven III". I wouldn't mind if it were it's own song, but slapping the Unforgiven song name on it is like placing a Hemi badge on a Neon. Other than that, I'd have to say the favourite right now is "That Was Just Your Life".

Cheers,
Jetboy

Okay, I finished the album. I must say that I really enjoyed it. I can't really pick a favorite, but if I had to I think I would choose The End of The Line. 👍

But gotta agrree James' vocals :ouch:
Maybe he should start drinking again.
...or smoke more. His voice seems to be climing up the octave range the older he gets. Still, I don't think he sounds that bad.

I like this album 👍. It's a far cry from "Master of Puppets" and "Ride the Lightning", but really, that style of music is very outdated. To me, this album is a cross between "Load" (which I really liked) and "St. Anger" (which I really didn't). They recaptured some of that edge that's been missing, yet kept it sounding current. Best of all, it doesn't sound like it was recorded in a tin can! :dopey:

I got in to Metallica in-between the release of Master and Justice, and now have all the albums. (recently bought St. Anger and S&M aswell for $12 each Australian)

I must say Death Magnetic is a big improvement on Load, Reload and St.Anger. Yeah, the songs sound a little like older tracks, But sounds a lot better than the tripe they started to put out with the previous three. I would give it 81/2 out of 10. Not quite back to their best, however there can be only ONE.

After my first listen, I would have given it around 6-7/10. But now after a couple of listens I would say ~ 8-9/10. It's not really in between And Justice For All and the Black Album. There are some influences from the earlier albums, but they don't stand out over the more modern stuff. I recognized the influence from Load/Reload immediately, the Black album and even Garage. I wouldn't know about St. Anger, since I don't remember much of that album.

The part of 'All Nightmare Long' starting from about 1:28 reminds me of Megadeth.

Was anybody annoyed with the "more strong" lyric? Are they afraid of getting sued by Kanye West?

I just have to say that I can't help but notice that the Guitar Hero 3 version of the album sounds so much better than the actual CD. The CD feels like it's "Brickwalled" and distorted, but the GH3 version sounds great! Anyone else notice this?

I just got the album from a buddy who got the disc with a ticket for the concert in New Orleans not too long from now.
The album rocks. My ear says it's something of a mix between AJFA, MOP, and the vocals of more recent albums.

Current fav track: Could say. :ouch:
All Nightmare Long is great.

The moment I heard "The Day That Never Comes" My thought was redemption, and I wasn't Dissapointed. I know it seems like a no brainer that the board's biggest Metallica fanboy would say it rocks... but yeah. It rocks. I love it.

I'm buying it this weekend hopefully, so far I've only heard one song.

Initial thoughts were: Great sound (has technique and depth without losing the speed and good riffs), but James sounded a bit different than I expected. Higher pitch maybe. Not bad, just different.
Maybe rehab does that to you. That's why I'm never going to do it, I like my current voice. 👍

I have my new personal ratings sorted out:

That was just your life: 3 stars. Like the fast, "Battery-like" rhythm.

The end of the line: 2 stars. Really don't care for it that much.

Broken beat and scarred: 2 stars. Same as the last one

The day that never comes: 1 star. Sounds too much like load/reload to me.

All Nightmare Long: 4 stars. This is where metallica gets their groove back it seems like. I just love this one.

Cyanide: 3 stars. Pretty decent song.

The Unforgiven III: 5 stars. I've always had a liking for Metallica's slower songs like Fade To Black, and Sanitarium. This one really takes the cake for me. It just gives me the chills. Better than track 4 indeed.

The Judas Kiss: 5 stars. This song really kicks ass.

Suicide and redemption: 4 stars. Pretty good instrumental song.

My Apocalypse: 2 stars: Don't like it all that much. Sounds too much like the theme of St. Anger.

I think its a pretty good album. I think though that its "just a Metallica album." One thing I do really like about it is the guitar playing. Theres a lot of stuff going on there that hasn't really been on a Metallica album before. I notice James' skill level showing through on this album has increased significantly to what would of been in the past. Great I say. Things can only really get better... Unless they get worse.
