Ok. Here I am holding the Madcatz Microcon controller for ps2, and while it does some functions pretty good, unfortunately other things leave out to be desired.
Ignore the fact that the controller has a custom programmable button that lets you record special moves (called the "macro"). After all, the only thing you want in a controller is to work responsively and smoothly.
Honestly I really like the idea, which is to make a very compact controller, and I really like the feel of it. It is 20% smaller than the traditional DS2 and you will immediatly feel the difference if you grab a DS2 after having a gaming session with the Microcon.
Now this is the deal. I love how the Microcon controller performs with racing games. Playing GT3 and WRC are gaming bliss with the microcon, because you can feel how well made and resistant to pressure the buttons are.
It is when you play with games that require really delicate button touches, like Splinter Cell, and WE6 that the controller fails. For instance, the original DS2 has far more analog sensitivity than the Microcon. I have found myself many times being discovered in SC because I just sneaked too "loud". To actually make the sneaking movement you are going to have a hell of a time with the Microcon. You are going to have to press the left analog in an exact position if you want to go quietly. And forget, about sneaking with the left button while you pan the camera with the right. The instance you touch the right one, for nature, you will change your pressure on the left one and the game will clearly let you notice.
Now with the digital pad it is just so damn ugly. I cant properly handle my player without pressing the Microcon too hard. I hate controllers that do that. It is not fun anymore. You actually pay more attention to how hard you press buttons than what you do with your player.
So
Pros:
+Slick compact design
+Durable and pressure resistance buttons
+Good cable, it doesnt contract like the DS2
+20% noticeable smaller
+works good with racing games
+Good price $19.99
Cons:
-Not as many degrees of sensitivy (on the analog buttons) as the original DS2
-Not suitable for games that require precise and exacts movements.
-If you thought it was hard to play FPS games with the DS2, the Microcon will almost let you not to have fun as you will be more worried about catching your crosshairs in the screen.
-Digital section is poorly done IMO.
