Forza was on a decline and needed a Gran Turismo Sport style reboot badly. Everything about that game was outdated.
Why do people thing GT Sport was a good thing?

I know it was made from scratch but it was failed attemp just as new Forza. It heavily lacked content from day one, had barebones career mode etc. It was good only after 2 years of patches filled with content.

It was exactly what FM 2023 is.

So, pretty much the same as any AAA game and a lot of smaller indie games made in the last 5+ years. It's pretty much become the industry standard that you don't release a game when it's finished, you release it when there's just enough to secure early adopters whose money ends up being used to finish it.

GTS released in early access. 🤷‍♂️

Polyphony Digital has released half-games now and in the past: GT Concept Tokyo-Geneva, Gran Turismo HD Concept, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, and My First Gran Turismo, and its seemingly captive audience has gobbled them, so their formula works well.

I have the gut feeling that Forza Motorsport was going to be a more hardcore sim-style game, but probably some marketing honcho demanded changes that delayed and compromised the whole thing. I don't have proof, but also no doubt about it.

This series had tons of potential, but it’s been in a slow death spiral since Forza Motorsport 5. They ditched a lot of features which basically killed their own community and it has never recovered. “Built from the ground up” was their moto back then too.

Well not officialy, it was sold as a full release
Early access wasn’t a common term back then - especially on consoles, but it was very much communicated that GTS would release in a very basic and unfinished state and evolve over time.

Well darn, I guess he wasn't safe as I first thought. Now that makes me wonder if Dan Greenawalt himself isn't as secure either.

Do you think Forza Motorsport would benefit from an approach similar to the Reiza studio that produces the Automobilista series? They basically have been living off the old Madness engine, so I can see a smaller team working with the solid foundation of the new Forza engine.

Dan is likely fine. He got promoted to a more general Xbox Studios/manager role within Microsoft a few years back. Besides a couple quick promos for FM, he’s been pretty radio silent overall since he got promoted.

Oh wow, I had no idea. Would explain why he hasn't been as present with Forza the way Kaz still kinda is with GT.
