Microsoft trimmed the price of the player to $179 from $199 and said it will add five free movies for buyers between Aug. 1 and Sept. 30.

This might be the move from Microsoft that will get me to buy the HD DVD player. As long as its more reliable than the 360 I will be happy. Especially since its giving 5 free HD movies with it. Thats finally some great marketing. Now I just need to decide if I want to hold of on buying 300 next tuesday and just wait for the HD version. Hmmm
I wonder if this be available in all stores August 1st?

I wish the price would come down in the UK. I can get it for £109.99 with free P&P from play.com. If they bundled in a few good DVD's I'd definitely order it.

I am still not sure what I want to get yet. I would hate to buy an HD DVD player only to find out it lost the battle to Blue Ray. I am not sure which one is currently winning so as exciting as this offer is, I might still keep waiting. If Blue Ray wins then I will probably just get the PS3. That way I will at least be able to use it for movies until some good games come out for it.

meh... Still don't get why they didn't just make the drive an hd dvd drive in the first place. Yeah it would've been expensive but if you think about it the 360 isn't all that next gen, I mean next to a PS3 it sure isn't.

This is neither the time nor the place to even consider starting this argument. Period.

@ CAMAROBOY69: One thing to keep in mind is that the 360 HD-DVD drive is of lower quality than standalone players of both formats (including the PS3).

OH ok thanks. I havent researched much at all about the 360 HD-DVD player so I appreciate that info. I will probably just save my money and see what happens with the blue-ray vs HD battle. Especially if the 360 HD player is lower quality then I would rather get the best quality HD player.

I really don't need any kind of HD player right now. My regular DVD player upconverts very nicely, and we have an (admittedly limited) selection of HD titles available on demand through our cable service.

But most importantly, my TV at my college apartment isn't HD anyway.

Neither my TV, nor my 360 would be able to pump out the 1080p graphics like I would like, so needless to say I'm not completely interested. Having several other "standard" DVD players at home, it would be a waste to have to buy both HD-DVD and regular DVD formats... So it isn't worth it. Yet.

The 360 does support 1080p through component.

Very true, I guess I did forget about that for a moment. Either way, my television is only capable to 1080i, but I'm usually running it at 720p.

At least MS gave us the buyers the option and not forced BR on us, at higher costs.

The Blue Ray in the PS3 isn't the current BR standard anyway and there is confusion on whether it can be upgraded to 1.1 standard.
