I thought this might come in handy for those that are wondering about the points cost for the 360. If you buy the points online then they usually cost $25.00 for 2,000 points. That is $1.25 for every 100 points.
points------price
2000------$25.00
1600------$20.00
1000------$12.50
800-------$10.00
600-------$ 7.50
400-------$ 5.00
200-------$ 2.50

Wth are points?
They are for buying download content like cars, maps, backrounds, skins, face camo, body skins, full arcade games, and just about anything else for online. Most of the arcade games are $2.50 each. 👍
They are quite handy. You can either buy entire packs or just certain specific items you want. Some are only a few cents.

You have to purchase Microsoft Points to purchase things on the XBL Marketplace, like: Gamer Pictures, Arcade Games, Themes and other stuff.

Thing is, here you can only buy in a minimum lump of 500 points here, so if you want to buy something for 100, it's quite annoying becuase you're spending more than you want to.

I buy them in the 2000 points pack. Some time this week I will be getting Frogger, Joust, Smash TV, Robotron, and Marble Blast Ultra. When Galaga comes out I am getting that for sure. This 360 is soooo addictive! 👍
PS if you buy the card from the local stores you only get 1600points for $25.00.

I got my 360 Yesterday.. I'm totally addicted to Oblivion... A fin Gleam + the modding trick helps out a bit.

So.. One could buy cars with points on NFS: Carbon when it comes out?

I've been all over Oblivion the past few days. It's like virtual crack.
What's this fin gleam and mod you refer to?

I use my credit card (online on Live) and I'm pretty sure I have a choice of how many points to buy. But I believe 500 points is the amount on the cards you buy from shops like EB etc.

I've only been buying points in the 500 ($6.25) packs. The only reason I've needed it is for PGR3 thus far, as I'm still waiting on Street Fighter II to hit XBLA.

However, is it just me, or are the themes and gammer pictures horribly overpriced?

It's just a way to make money. Sounds really stupid to me. Paying for game add-ons...maybe. Avatars and stuff like that...no.

Good job Microsoft...you succeeded in ripping even more people off. Aren't they already rich enough?

Hey, if you were them, you'd do the same thing. You'd provide us with a crappy selection of themes and gamerpics, and you charge money for the good ones.

Who are you to know how I think? If I had the money Microsoft had, I wouldn't cry over $5 or $10 for a frickin' picture.

First of all, it's like 100 points for 5 pictures. 25¢ per picture.

And yes, you would do it. Say it's $1 per picture pack or theme. People buy 1 picture pack and 1 theme. That's $2 per person. Multiply that by 1,000,000. Then there you go, there's $2,000,000 for you easily. It might not be much compared to 40 billion, but it's still a lot.

Yes, but will Sony be able to guarantee the same quality of online gaming as Live? Microsoft's system has worked out incredibly well, and pretty much proved to Sony that it was worth sticking with it, and also proved to Nintendo that it was worth getting into it.

I'll pass total judgement once I see the PS3's setup in action, as the same can be said of the Wii's system as well, but I remain skeptical as always. Live has thus far proven to work out quite well, and it is certain that both Sony and Nintendo stand to learn a few things from Microsoft, and of course things could go the same way for Microsoft as well.

...I'm surprised they haven't announced a web-browser yet for the 360, as it seems to be the missing feature as compared to the competition. But then again, I presume that Microsoft assumes that most of their consumers have PCs, and thus wouldn't want to surf the internet with their gamming console.

I would love to browse the net on a 60" plasma tv, kicka$$

Now picture this same system...with free online gaming...and you've got the PS3 online service.
All we saw were a few screens of the service, with a few notes on how it works. Copycats usually don't succeed the original.

And with free online play, I bet the servers won't be as good. Not to mention, half the fun of Xbox Live are the game trailers and demos, etc. I can download a demo of a game, for free, instead of paying $7 at Blockbuster to rent the game for a week. If I have to pay for demos and stuff on the PS3, I'd be severely disappointed.

On paper, your comment is correct. However, I wouldn't be so optimistic.

^ Good point there. Part of the reason why demos, trailers, etc are free on XBLM is because we pay the man $4 a month for the stuff and a good ammount of bandwith to play with as well.

I did online on PS2 with a friend, and I was dissapointed. It was slow and clunky compared to XBL, IMO, but you get what you pay for (nothing).

If anyone can do it, it is Sony. They have a gazillion dollars to play with, so they could surprise us all and make everything free. But then again, its Sony...

As for the Wii online, I'm a bit worried that it is all Wi-Fi based. Granted I'm sure they will make accomodations to people who don't have Wi-Fi, but my biggest concern would be with bandwidth issues. Are that many people going to be able to access a server like that that often without serious problems? We also have to keep in mind the downloadable games, which could make a mess as well.

...and if everything is Wi-Fi based, what will prevent people stealing bandwidth from their neighbors?

(BTW: I live about a block away from a McDonals with Wi-Fi. Is that too far to pick up their signal?)

For the Wii, I read on IGN that there's no ethernet port on it, but they'll supply some doohiggy connector that will let you connect an ethernet cord.

You should be able to secure your connections, requiring a passcode to use the Wi-Fi.

Depends how far away the McDonalds is. If it's down the street, then yes, you should be able to get it. If it's a mile away, then I doubt it.

Here is a good idea, why don't you get 10 free points for every 1000 gamer points you earn, 10 points is nothing and it would serve a nice extra for earning them.

It doesnt take 200 hours to get 1000 gamerpoints. I was able to get over 10,000 in a month after I bought my 360. Some games let you get 1000 in one hour. Like he said 10 is better than nothing.

The challenging ones like PGR3, Saints Row, Battlefield 2, etc are very, very hard to get 1000 gamer points. I've had a 360 since release date and only have a tad over 6000 gamerpoints. It all depends on how good of a gamer you are, how much time you have or what type of game you like to buy. The only ones I know of that you can get 1000 easily are Call of Duty 2 and King Kong, and I doubt any like that takes an hour to complete unless you state otherwise...

But yeah, it does seem like a good idea.
