Microsoft Speed Wheel. Thoughts?

Does anyone own this wheels? Thoughts on it? I'm wondering because i'm interested in buying one.

I don't own it, but... I'd rather play Forza with a regular controller, I think.

Even if it "works", you still gotta hold the controller up in the air. Not really my idea of fun. 👎
 
Im sorry dude I just really like this wheel it actually surprised me I think most people would love it .There's just a learning curve that takes a few days after that you cant imagine using the controller.

Oh and you don't have to hold it in the air it functions just like a controller.

Never said it didn't work. I'm sure it does its job flawlessly. All I'm saying is that it seems to me that holding it in the air could get old quick.

It's not using kinect, you can hold it anywhere you like. Just like users using a gamepad. It's a step up from a gamepad and I've seen it bundled with FM4 for $99, but the game should be played with a FFB wheel.
 
A review from one of my buddies GT DCJamison at another site.

"I bought it, was a little heavy after one race, as it didn't feel right holding it in my lap. Steering was ok, when you knew which position the wheel was in, but was a little to easy to lose track. In Forza 3, shifting was a bit rough, as it detected the controller as an old microsoft wheel. Had to use B as the clutch and Y/A to shift. The whole thing seemed a little gimmicky.

The deal-breaker: No place to plug in a headset. Unless you had a wireless headset that didn't require the cable to plug into the controller, you won't be talking to anyone.

I contacted Microsoft and they suggested I buy a Microsoft wireless headset if I wanted to use the wheel and xbox live chat. I'm not going to give up a pair of X41's for this controller."

I love it, it's the first time I've moved away from a pad, it's so intuitive although a bit of a learning curve. I'm only a casual gamer so I don't use clutch and usually start off on auto gears. More serious racers would probably find the gear up / down buttons a bit awkardly placed. Also there are no Rb Lb buttons which are needed for navigating some menus.
 
I think what it does, it does pretty well. It doesn't have the left and right shoulder buttons (LB and RB) and there is no way to use a second controller for the menus. I guess you are expected to just pretend those menus (and parts of the game) don't exist.

It seems weird that two official Microsoft products meant for each other don't play well together. I expect they will fix it by redesigning the menus or allowing a second controller.
 
Onto the speed wheel. I haven't had the chance to play with one yet, but my friend says it's kind of annoying. He says it lacks proper accuracy, and that there's no headphone jack to talk to friends, the main reason we both own Xbox's.
 
In my opinion, the Speed Wheel is a clear message from Microsoft to the sim racing community, telling us they don't see us as valuable customers. The old MS wheel really wasn't bad, if they had made a few small changes and given it better pc support it could've been a serious competitor to the DFGT. But no, just can the whole thing. Thank (insert your favorite deity) for Fanatec. Too bad they don't sell in regular stores.

The LB/RB issue is a real head scratcher though, just makes you wonder what goes through some designers' heads.
 
^To be honest, I think the designers wanted to target the "Young Womens" group, they really went over the top with the vibration feature too. :lol: ;) Sorry mod

its still a good product not as good as dfgt but you also dont have to be embarressed when people come over and you have a car setup in your living room lol sorry about my spelling lol

I don't think it was ever intended to replace a wheel and I think it works pretty good. I never did like steering with my thumb.
I pull this out for a quick session when I don't have my Fanatec CSR and Elite pedals connected.

It's a great product. For $60 it's a great buy, especially considering that a Gamepad isn't too far off that price. The problem is though, there are some really obvious flaws. The lack of a microphone jack is a major one. Well unless you have a computer mic. For the money, it's great. They made some really bad design choices though, especially since Xbox Live is a big part in the success of the Xbox, not having a mic jack is a pretty bad design flaw.
 
you are right that does suck no rb/lb buttons it really makes you think how could they leave that out but despite that it still functions great
 
I was thinking about giving my 10 year old cousin my DFGT, but I think I'll keep it for a backup and buy him one of these instead.
 
I really like this speed wheel but the dfgt is a really good wheel.I just wish microsoft would allow this wheel but i do like the speed wheel .I am really impressed at how accurate the steering is i dont see how someone would be dissappointed with it

Has nothing to do with what MS will allow. The DFGT is not compatible. The Xbox 360 does not use HID force feedback. So it's Logitech that's not allowing it to work because they don't make any XID wheels.

I'm a new member, and a new Xbox and Forza 4 owner. I could never play racing games because it made me physically nauseous, so when some friends let me play their Forza 4 I was a little nervous that I would get sick. After playing it and for the first time ever and not getting sick, I was hooked. We tried playing it with the Kinect and with the controller. I didn't drive too bad using the Kinect, but my arms were dead tired pretty fast and I could barely drive using the controller. So when I ordered my Xbox and Forza4 I figured the speed wheel had to do a better job than the other options, so got that too.

Since I'm new to all of this I didn't really know what to expect out of this controller, I thought it would be like the Wii Mario Kart one. Other than it taking a few races to get used to, this thing works amazingly well. It is so much better than the Wii one, I read somewhere that is has a gyroscope in it. The only real drawback for me is you use so much energy trying to hold it and steer with it that it's very tiring. I would much rather use this than a controller or even the Kinect, as it is way more precise than either of those.

Anyway, sorry about the long post, I love the game so much and I wanted to be able to race on rainy days when I can't take my Arrow CIK Kart out to a real track, I ended up buying the Fanatec CSR Wheel, CSR Elite Pedal and shifter and now I'm really addicted.

This about sums it up for me as well. I tend to only race with the Wireless Speed Wheel. At least I've got the most fun racing that way.

I know this is a rather old thread, but that's the only issue for me with the Speed Wheel as well. Whenever I need to navigate to certain areas, I actually have to disconnect the Speed Wheel, and reconnect with my controller. Then you do what you need to do, and then you disconnect the controller, and reconnect with the Speed Wheel for the next race. It can get pretty annoying.

First person shooters make me nauseous, i found that certain backgound colors such as browns & grays affect me. Racing games are the only thing I really play, but there are a few that get to me( only the ones that I use a controller). I use the hood view which is like a FPS but it does'nt bother me.

I borrowed a speed wheel from a friend and was suprised how acurate it was
but like you got tired of holding my arms out. IMO nothing beats a FFB wheel,
I have the CSR also. I think having a wheel helps with the nausea because its
no different than driving a real car.
