Hey there folks.

I just updated my computer to Windows XP by buying the home edition that comes in the computer stores. I deleted my whole old partition(it was a virus breeding ground) so now I'm just left withthe most basic stuff that comes with windows XP home.

Since there is no MS word, can anyone here tell me how to get it?

Unfortunately, you'll need to purchase it. If you're going to buy word, might as well just buy office, then you'll never need to purchase it again.

Then again, there are ways to hack it, but that's against the AUP and stuff. Sorry.

The Microsoft Office suite is not your average 'MS Paint' software. It is a very powerful application built on years and years of experience from Microsoft. And since Bill Gates is God, he can charge what ever amount he wants and get away it.

People still buy Windows? Heh.

Isn't it like $330 though? If so why so expensive?

Excel and Outlook are two of the best applications ever written. Word doesn't lag too far behind either. And have you seen SmartSuite? It's the only real competition to Office, but it lags so far behind Office in every way, that it's almost embarrassing.

If you use your computer for more than just games, Office is actually really worth the money.

Slight monopoly, if you know what I mean. Because of the lack of good options, (Mac doesn't count), it's really easy to charge such high prices. I got mine free with college, but yet, I'm paying like 30g's a year for that. Damit all.

Man all I want to do is type essays for school. Is there any free MS word that will let me do this? Or anything for that matter that isn't a piece of crap?

Yeah, for just typing essays, OpenOffice will be more than enough.

BTW, I should note that if you look around on the academic discount websites, you can get a pretty hefty discount on Office. I got my copy for $100, which is a bargain for all the crap it can do.

Okay this OpenOffice thing. What is it really? I went to the site but still couldn't figure out what it is. Is it microsoft based? Will it mess up my new clean fresh XP experience?

Also, can I take MS word 95 from an acient computer at my house and put it onto to this one and have it work?

OpenOffice is an open source project. It is similar to the Microsoft Office Suite and it is free to use. No, it's not from Microsoft and no, it will not 'mess' up your XP installation.

Yes, you can install Word 95.

The program is too big. A floppy can only hold 1.44 MB of data. Plus, you can't just move the program to another computer. You need to reinstall it.

Man, just download it. It's free, and believe me, it can do a lot more than just your normal highschool essay. Of course, you can also do just an essay....

If you're doing formula stuff like for physics courses, Open Office will save you A LOT of time. My linux version of the app came with an app that takes care of it. My engineering friends use it a LOT

I'd take notepad over it.

I'd code my OWN text editor in VB before using wordperfect :p

seriously though, it's one damn annoying app once you get used to ms word's interface

Does not. But I'd take Microsoft Office over it.
Over OpenOffice? Why? Have you even tried OpenOffice? It is not bad for free software; it can import all the Microsoft types, make pdfs, and save in its own format that is smaller than the .doc files. And the interface is 70% the same, so its not that hard to switch.
