Microsoft's "iPod Killer" - Zune Discussion

Anyway, come on, show a little love for MS people...!

What can you do? When you're that big, people will hate you. Look at Wal-Mart, Apple (mainly the iPod), and Dell.

Google has surprisingly kept the "good guy" image (for the most part), but that can change fast.

I find it ironic that the people who hate these big companies buy from them.

The Zune looks fantastic; really like the UI. And that screen is massive, plus viewing widescreen is always nice. But the thing that will be nice about the Zune is that everyone will be trying to mod it with new firmware, and other doodads to enhance it.

But nothing beats the Creative Zen Vision:M. Nothing. The iPod has already been killed many times over--it'll just take the public a while to figure it out.

Add AOL to that list. However, I do use AOL Instant Messenger daily, even if I know that it's not an attractive piece of software. (I use "classic" not the new Triton).

I've tried Trillian, but I didn't like it. I love Gaim's simple interface, but my version of GTK won't play nice with it. So I'm stuck with a product I dislike from a company that has made some bad decisions.

Once I go back to Ubuntu, I will leave AIM for good.

I think someone here will be happy to hear that another person is actually looking forward to the Zune. *Looks at Edwin*

I wouldn't necessarily say that the iPod has been "killed." It really depends on what you need. I bought the 60GB iPod 5G for the large space and video capability. Now, my needs have changed and I have given that iPod to my brother.

I need a smaller, flash-based player to run with and carry around everywhere. The iPod 5G didn't fit this so I am in the search for a new player. The Nano is really looking good right now, but I'm open for other options.

If you can point me to a "Nano killer," then I will gladly consider the suggestion. :)

What I mean by the iPod being killed is that there are plenty of other players on the market that offer infinitely more. They just aren't as cool looking. The Creative ZVM is better in every way as far as I can tell. And they just came out with a 60 gigger. The Gigabeat also looks very promising.

I'd look into the iRiver Clix for an alternative to the Nano. And if you're on a budget, you can get the Isignia Amigo 2GB for 99 bucks. The Creative Zen Plus looks promising. Although, none of these are as small as the Nano.

But the Meizu M6 looks absolutely ****ing fantastic as an iPod Nano alternative.

The biggest selling point of the Nano for me is it's size. The Meizu M6 is certainly attractive, but it's just not the right size I'm looking for. Thanks for the suggestions, I'll keep the others in mind.

If size is that big of an issue, you should know that the difference between the two is minimal.

Meizu M6: 3.1" x 1.9" x 0.4", 1.9 ounces
iPod Nano: 3.5" x 1.6" x .27", 1.41 ounces

The side-by-side with the iPod is throwing me off. I'll check on weight later (I would love to run with my player).

Subscription based music services I've found are the most convinient ways to listen to music out there. For one, you can listen to any song you want, as much as you want, assuming you pay for the service month after month. On top of that, now with almost every subscription based service, you can download the files and put them onto portable devices... I don't see what's not to like.

The way I do it is, use the subscription based service for most things. When I find something I like, buy the CD. 👍

Just so you know, Google has already made some bad decisions - overseas. They decided to collaborate with China's communist government to deny access to restricted sites.

It's all about the money, and Google is just another corporation after all. I was dissapointed, but definitely not surprised.

My opinion is that even if Google resisted communists' push, they would eventually be forced to cooperate thanks to that party's influence.

It's off-topic, so this will be my last take on the subject. If Google was some kind of do-good, superhero kind of company, they would have just slapped the commies and stayed out of China until the government came around(which is never). Not bending their principal. But unfortunately in the real world, that very well could be suicidal for Google. China is a growing mega-market, and just about every corporations needs a piece of that pie.

Found some photos that compare the sizes of the Zune and the iPod.

That's a pretty reasonable size, considering the size of the screen.

Also, the screen on the Zune isn't much bigger than the iPod Video screen (and the Zune appears to be taller, rather than wider).

I'd have it wider. They missed that one.

But iPod looks much more expensive than the Zune, partially because of the chrome back. I always loved that.

I hate the chrome back. It scratches so easily. Now a black iPod with a carbon fibre back...

Finally. Something else worth stroking!

I'd possibly get one, but I'd like to be able to attach it to a new head unit which I'll probably buy in the near future, like you can do with the iPod compatible ones.

....you remind me of the headset I got for my iPod which just started cracking prematurely. :grumpy:

Has anybody got it [Zune] yet? Anybody you know?

One of our friends posted this at Accel. While the article focuses on connecting the Zune to a PC, something else caught my attention.

I noticed that throughout Zune's install process, Microsoft concentrated on people in the background images. Personally, I think it's kind of cheesy.

I guess this is one of those things I'm really picky about (such as CAPITAL LETTERS and iTunes 7 ;)). It's probably not a big deal to most people, but I thought I would see if anyone else feels the same way. What do you guys think about using pictures of people along with software? Cheesy? Not a big deal? Needs more pictures of hotties? I'd like to hear what you think.

Not a big deal IMO. During the installation of iTunes 6 and below it showed a pair of people hugging. To me, it doesn't really matter, although I prefer an abstract background.

Is the orgasming error girl cheezy too?
