Yesterday was not only the 10th anniversary of the release of Minecraft, but it also saw the launch of a new Minecraft-based game, Minecraft Earth...

Minecraft Earth will be an augmented reality game that will be playable on Android and iOS devices.

Minecraft itself already has VR support, but the prospect of an AR version of the game was first demonstrated at a games expo (E3?) a few years ago now, and it looked absolutely amazing - so I have quite high hopes for this!

There will be a closed beta for Minecraft Earth and you can sign up here: https://earth.minecraft.net/en-us/sign-up

I'm personally not a Minecraft player, but assuming this allows users to place their own creations into a shared AR world, this is something that would need to be moderated pretty heavily.

But at the same time, I miss how much happier the world was back in Summer 2016 when everyone was playing Pokemon GO, so I hope this succeeds!

I hope to the Heavens I don't have to deal with Creepers if I ever tried out Minecraft Earth. Otherwise, this Minecraft Earth may bring a little extra life into the crazy world of Minecraft. Maybe we can enter The Nether or even The End here.

Minecraft Earth (Early Access) is now available... and I've had my first look at it on my iPad.

I already have reservations about it for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, it looks like it is almost entirely dependent on physically walking around looking for items - and you need to 'tap' objects while you are literally out searching for them. I can't see myself playing this on my iPad in the streets of Glasgow somehow... also, my biggest pet peeve at the moment is mobile phone zombies... this kind of game almost requires you to become a mobile phone zombie in order to play it.

It is possible to buy in-game currency which in turn allows you to buy 'Build Plates'... while you can earn in-game currency (rubies) by playing the game, the price of the build plates looks high... and the (literal) price of the rubies is pretty ridiculous. For example, one of the larger build plates costs 325 rubies... and you can buy 400 rubies from the Minecraft Store... for £20. That seems absurdly expensive.

On the plus side, placing a build place in AR looks brilliant, and being able to build 'life-size' minecraft models looks pretty cool, though I don't think the scale of models you can build is particularly big.

I may install it on my phone and see what is what, but sadly I don't think I am going to be playing this much.

From all I know it's just a copy and paste of Poke Go.

I stopped playing Poke go because it just got blah for me.
Too much going here do this and then whatnot.

In a couple of the parks i often walk my dogs in i'll frequently come across large groups of 'zombies' staring at their phones - who i can only assume are playing Pokemon Go. For something that's meant to bring gaming troglodytes out into the fresh air to socialise with each other, there never seems to be much interaction between any of them, just social awkwardness in numbers.
