Minimum post count to start new threads

Hmm, not a fan of the idea, there's some ongoing discussions in threads opened from new users, like "GT5 general news thread" for example. Also there's many rather useless threads opened from members with more than 30 posts. So altogether such a rule doesn't make much sense, to me anyways.

That was his 11th post(If I counted correctly) which would be in the 10-15 span I suggested before they can open a thread.

Would there be a way that if you were new to the site for your first 15 posts or something like that, to switch out the new thread link to be a search button so they're FORCED to search?

I guarantee that it will make sense when GT5 is released. Without a restriction on thread creation by new members, we would be inundated with topics like "ZOMG i just got gt5 its awsome", and moderators probably wouldn't even be able to keep up with locking them, particularly if they made a comment describing why it was closed, as they prefer to do. People would post in a "first impressions" thread instead.

Fully agrees with all you said.

A member should have thirty post before he/she makes first topic or we end up having 50 topics on how to beat a same championship for GT5.

So maybe instead of the new topic button giving you a new topic creater, it should redirect you to a search options.👍

Fair point. 👍

Hey, that made me think. Would it be possible to have it so that new members get the search function first and ONLY when no result shows up, they get an option to create a new topic?

I remember my first thread(...just went to my posts) I started it at 5 posts, it got locked, fairly quickly.

Bad idea IMO. How confusing would that be if you ad to make a search with no results to start a thread.

That's the question. ;)

I just thought it may be a good option for those with a genuine question or findings, but I agree they could just write that in a more general thread, of course.

Only problem I see is in the odd occasion you get the new member related to Gran Turismo with a gem of information to share. Like Phil Frank did or a Sema winner (though they seem to go to official forum) or anyone who become involved or interacted somehow. It's very rare, but I hate to think we missed something because they couldn't make a thread on their experience.

Well if it's real important, perhaps they could just PM Jordan or a moderator and tell them they have information to share.

Have yet to post a thread. You guys here at GTP pretty much cover it all. But I will pm Jordan about my copy of GT5 that is coming in the mail this week. :)

It was in place for most of last year, but was removed shortly after GT5 came out.

Jordan, is this feature still in the plans?

You don't encourage new users by welcoming them to the site and then telling them in the same breath that they are not free to participate in the discussion.

I enjoy GT Planet because it seems to be mostly free of the boneheads that are rampant on places like GameFAQs. I appreciate that people are cordial, helpful and welcoming here and not rude like they are on that other forum.

You get a great community like that by encouraging participation with fair moderation, not by limiting participation.

I give my kudos to GT Planet as it is right now. As a new user myself, I am very happy with the site. It has added to my enjoyment of GT5 immensely.

I understand what it's like to be the new guy. I wish to to be welcomed and free to engage in live discussions as they unfold. I'm new to gtplanet, but have been playing GT as long as many of you. I tried making a few posts this afternoon, as one of your mods said... I suck by default. Come on fellas, unlock the door and let me socialize in a live format.

You have to demonstrate that you are able to have a conversation in an appropriate way first. If your posts were not approved, then there was clearly something wrong with them.

Very well handsome,

I've spent the last 10 years as a consultant for Lowes hardware. My primary job was to negotiate with zoning officers for new stores, and union bosses for remerchandising.
My current endeavor has me as COO of JSTARR Solutions. I am a head hunter for Wal-Mart. Through JSTARR I network with thousands of good folks (such as yourself) finding quality employees to perform Wal-Mart remodels.
My ability to carry on appropriate conversations has made me a wealthy and happy man. The mods are probably busy dealing with others, they'll get to my posts later on, no worries.

That's not at all what I meant when I said you had to demonstrate that you could carry out a conversation appropriately. Your resume doesn't really interest anyone here - after all, we're not a bank and you're not applying for a loan. Nor does the length of time that you have been playing GT games. What I mean is that you have to show that you can post within the rules laid out in the forum's Acceptable Use Policy. The mods don't usually refer to people as "sucking by default" unless they've so obviously failed to meet the AUP that the moderators are hard-pressed to see any redeeming qualities in the post in question.

Here's an Idea: perhaps new member's Threads can be approved like their posts. This possibly wouldn't win favor with the staff, however. It would increase the workload significantly, especially since not all new members are "gramatically proficient".

The first post, regardless of if it's in an existing thread or starting a new one, must be approved one at a time by the staff. Needing to approve any more than that would be murder.

And if you think the posts you come across are bad, you should see the ones that don't make it through the queue.

What about having small restriction for thread creation, 15 posts isn't too much or too little...

Well said Interludes. My apologies as I thought you were looking for some background to deem me worthy. I will respect and follow the AUP. Thanks.

What about having small restriction for thread creation, 15 posts isn't too much or too little...

15 posts is small enough that I imagine that would increase the likelihood of people spamming to 15 to be able to post their thread ideas. When it was in place, the 100-post limit tended to limit that, as those who tried were very usually caught either by a member of staff, or the Report button.

Though it's worth pointing out, that 95% of people who spam to get to a "post thread" minimum, usually are trying to post something that's already been covered. That's been my findings, anyways.

XXI - Users' first posts (and all subsequent posts, until that first one is approved) are entered into a Moderation Queue for the staff to review on a case-by-case basis, so depending on who's online, it can be a quick process, or require a bit of a wait 👍
