Anyone seen this? I think its a strange one!

Maybe the new Evo X (10) but i don't think it is certain yet! I mean the Evo IX hasn't been around that long!

Mitsubishi Goes for Broke With Wild Concept-X
We kind of expected it: Mitsubishi saving its most radical model for Tokyo. Having unveiled the new Lancer Concept-Sportback at the Frankfurt auto show last month, Mitsubishi chose its own backyard, the Tokyo Motor Show, to reveal the top-of-the-range, fire-breathing Concept-X.

In markets where the Lancer Evolution IX is already on sale, many readers will see the Concept-X (pronounced "ex") as a feeble attempt to hide the fact that it's really the next-generation Evolution X (pronounced "ten"). But according to Mitsubishi, there is a strong possibility that this radically redesigned rocket will take on a completely different name. Hence, the generic "Concept-X" name. We think, however, Mitsu would have to be very brave to stray from the already widely accepted Evolution lineage.

What's not generic, however, are the car's looks and performance. Inspired by the air intakes from an F16 jet fighter, the Concept-X's upright grille styling looks as single-minded as any Evo ever. Penned at the Mitsubishi R&D Europe studio in Germany, the Concept-X is longer, wider and taller than the current Evo IX, and sits on the revised and strengthened platform for the new Outlander (which we will also see at Tokyo).

The sharp wedgelike X silhouette seems ready to rock n' roll in the World Rally Championships straight off the showroom floor. Because that's what it was designed for — to take over from the struggling Evo IX WRC car. With a huge all-in-one grille and air dam design feeding the oversized intercooler, power from the turbocharged 2.0-liter MIVEC engine is expected to clear 300 hp easily and generate 325 lb-ft of torque. Interestingly, the Concept-X can also incorporate a downsized version of the Outlander's all-aluminum 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine block.

The Concept-X will be the first Lancer to employ Mitsubishi's six-speed, two-pedal sequential AMT (automatic/manual transmission), while a revised version of the current INVECS CVT with six-speed manual mode and standard six-speed manual gearbox will also be offered.

But by far the most notable addition to the new Evo's array of techno-wizardry is what Mitsubishi calls Super All-Wheel Control. It is effectively a new electronically controlled steering setup which incorporates the Evo IX's Active Center Diff, Active Yaw Control, and Sports ABS into one system that monitors traction levels at all four corners and sends power to where it's needed the most.

Due for release in late 2007 or early 2008, the Concept-X will take on 18-inch wheels and a look that will elevate it beyond any Japanese high-performance AWD charger to date.

I doubt it will ever look like that if its going to be a Lancer Evo but i hope it keeps the front end i think it looks mean, Not too sure about the rear clusters tho!

Oh man, I really love the whole thing! If it looks like that, I may give that car some serious consideration...

I presume its still a concept. if its still half as good looking as this when its sold it will still be a looker - although it does look a little 'Mazda 6' from the rear 3/4 angle.

Yeah, a Concept means that the styling will change a little. Hopefully it will look similar. 👍

You certainly wouldn't miss one in the streets . I love the front, kind of indifferent about the rear but overall I like it a lot.

It's built tall in the EVO tradition but looks cleaner , more masculine & hungrier ... use a wider turbo for low-end low-lag and it's a bimmer popper

yep, thats the new platform, mitsu unveiled a 5door fastback lancer at the frankfurt show. its actually smaller in size like the evo 4-6 gen. hopefully the wrc model will take back the championship. check out the tokyo motor show coverage at www.automobilemag.com for more cars 👍

Front 👍, maybe a little too obviously "skyliney" in the shape of the lump at the front edge of the bonnet (thats hood for yanks). Overall nice and macho. The more slitty lights look mean.

Rear: cheap, horrible. Way too ricey, like a Mazda 6. "And the new evo's rear lights were styled by... wait for it.... Adidas!"

Love the front end. Really aggressive. I always thought the WRX was the better looking of the two. But this one really is great. And the new WRX........

Mannnnnnn. I hate this thing. Its too curvy lost raw edges of what makes a evo. I REALLY DISLIKE THIS. Reminds me of a smaller bunched up holden with different clusters and front lights and grille. They can keep that P.O.S I'll take a true evo like the 6 or the 8. This thing is 100 times worse than the 7 was.

Japanses cars are kinda starting to suck.

They look like crap japanese copies of european cars. 350z nice look boring engine. Evo X nice engine crap looks. RX8 nice looks gutless engine.

None of the japoanese sports cars excite me anymore.

Lets see if the new skyline can buck the trend or if it looses all its skylineness.

Nice, I like to see that the trend of tall headlights is dying...they stole the rims from Porsche though...

I just don't know how to reply to this, especially...

This.

 I'm gonna have to wait 'til I stop drooling to formulate my response...

Okay, here we go: Holy $h!t that thing is gorgeous! It might not follow in the EVO tradition of styling, but if the production EVO X looks like that, it will by far be the best looking EVO yet. 👍

Love it! The front looks so tight and agressive but the rear is pretty bland. What's up with Japanese cars of late having high waistlines though?

The rear is hideous. However, the front is EXACTLY what I was describing in the new WRX thread! How scoobs needs to make the middle dam nice and broad.

Great looking front from mitsubishi, but lower the "waistline" and for god's sake, CHANGE THAT REAR!

Stick some real headlights on the back and ditch those squinty pieces of crap, and give it a proper rear wing, and you've got an excellent looking car. And I think it's a given that it's going to have immense performance.

I agree the Renesis needs more torque, but the 350z's engine is brilliant. If I'm not mistaken, the VQ35DE is the most powerful V6 on sale in North America (or its damn close; 298hp stock is good output for a stock engine).

Young_Warrior
Torque.
Needs more power.
You do realise what type of engine it has don't you? It can keep up with cars with more power on a track, 276Bhp isn't weak, neither 242Bhp. It's not meant to keep up with a Ferrari.

It look ALOT better then the wacked out new look on the STi that's for sure.

Civicish front, GTO body, WRX rear. Kinda looks like something outta the Burnout games. But I do like it I must say, the car looks like its pissed off at the world though.

Nice. Not really a Lancer anymore, but I think they're killing that platform (finally). New Lancers don't really do justice to the platform anymore... much like the newer Sentras... :yuck:

As for the RX8 and 350Z, hey, I'd like any engine that'd get me to 100 kph in less than 7 seconds. But I guess they are boring compared to gonzo 2.0 turbos... but seeing as how few of us actually own 2.0 turbo AWD cars, they're still exciting enough.

I believe I speak for most people here when I say, you're quite ignorant. Japanese cars have not and never will "suck". Thier reliability exceeds US, EU, and AU motor vehicles--and that's a fact. Any time spent outside of your little box of a short life would enlighten you of that fact. Thier designs are not bland and certainly not boring--there are much worse US and EU designed cars that could easily be worse than even the ugliest Japanese car. None of thier engines are boring or "gutless"--Japanese 4cyl engines can easily be faster factory spec than any US or EU V6 and even some V8's. And the EVO 7 wasn't bad, the front grille of the 8 makes it the worst EVO yet.

*Edited to seem less insulting*

That thing is fantastic looking. By far one of the best Mitsu designs in history. Looking forward to that car's release regardless of what model it is.

Well it certainly gets me going more than the new Mitsubishi 380 - designed to compete with the Ford Falcon and Holden "Conformadoore" in Aus!

Mitsubishi 380: Inoffensive, bland. Most "safe" design Mitsubishi has ever done.

I think we're all agreed that the front of this X concept car is great, but the rear needs some work*.

*with a hammer.

I really like the front, the rear is ok but could be improved.

I like it. 👍

Now, only if Mitsubishi brought back the 3000GT like this...
