Mix & Match Tires

Have any of you ever raced with mixed tires? Like SS in the rear and SH in the front? Or any combination of available tires? I've been meaning to ask this question for a long time and kept forgetting to. I notice in the S Class races (where sadly is the only part of Career Mode with Tire & Fuel depletion turned on) when I'm heading to the pits for a change, it's usually my Front tire(s) that are toasted before my rear. Or a front tire if the course has mostly turns in the same direction.

So, that got me thinking if any of you have run a harder compound in the front to compensate for that extra wear. Granted, you're going to sacrafice grip, but I thought I would ask anyway. :)

Ive tried mixed tyre types during endurance races and my own personal findings are i do better on softs all round rather than mixing or running harder tyres on all 4 corners of the car.

Question to ask your self is.... yes your going to be able to stay on track longer without going to pits when every one else does but is that going to save better time compared to being able to run that faster lap by having all soft on all 4 corners ?

My tactic is if i lay a lap time of 1 sec faster than everyone else in qualifying then ill drop from softs to mediums , but if at any point during the race i feel some one is putting considerably faster laps down than they did in qualifying i switch back to softs and put the hammer down rather than driving efficiently and trying to save rubber =)

yes - I used to use them as a very basic way to tune a RUF BTR.
SH fronts and SM rears made the fronts lose grip earlier than a matched set of tyres, so the car didn't break into 9 flavours of oversteer every lap.
This also had the bonus effect of not letting the rears overheat, so they didn't wear as much as a matched set of the same grade of tyre.

Have fun and experiment - having harder front tyres will hurt lap times but can make an evil handling Mid / Rear engine car behave.

Also in the tyre wear in the S Licence events you can balance a car so both front and rear wear at the same rate for a mid race pit stop or to try and make them last the whole race.

I use to do it in early iterations of GT but somehow in 6 it just doesn't feel right, the balance of the car is offset.

Was really helpful in endurance racing when you realize you ran down your rears or front quicker. Also the ability to just change either front or back and not both is absent from 6 as well.

Yes. Sometimes I'll use a lower grade tyre on the rear in a front wheel drive car to help negate understeer. The only other time I'll use mixed compounds is with my imaginary road legal drag racing cars. I'll have something quite grippy on the back, either SS or RH, and CS or SH on the front, as it plays towards the notion that drag cars are good for straight line acceleration only, they're not built for cornering.

Thanks for the responses guys. I know it's not a thrilling topic, but it was something that was on my mind for a while... 👍

On some badly tuned car (by myself ;) ), if the front tires worn out (too much) faster than the rear
i put a one harder grade component
but that's not the best, better to find the problem with the front train and fix it

i never put harder tires at the rear, the result wouldn't be awesome
