Alright for the movie I working on I need a good Italian Mob type song for the opening, NOT the Godfather Waltz. I really like Dean Martian's Volare, but I'm sure that's been in a lot of movies. I'm looking through my dad's CD's but he must have 1000's of songs from the 40's, 50's, and so on.

Frank Sinatra is another possibilty but he has so many songs.

The music doesn't have to be old, but it has to be between the 1920's and 1980's and something you would hear in a mod type of movie. Any help would be apperciated.

I'm guessing the older generation on the forum will be able to help me.

But what type of feel are you going for with this opening sequence? Friendly and loose like a gathering of the boys and everyone's happy or more serious cause they're gonna execute some dude they have standing in front of them?

That will help determine what style and tone to go after.

Well the opening is a laid back feeling, two hitmen in a bar just talking. I would say more friendly then anything. They don't kill anyone till later on in the movie. It's also sort of a spoof type movie, but there really isn't any comedy in it.

Okay cool sounds good. Are we focusing primarily on them or are we checking out credits and getting to know the layout of the bar? Is the song meant to be source or score?

I'm sorry if I'm asking for to much detail, I'm just really interested in making films so I can't help myself.

Pretty much the opening credits are just a black background with red type giving the credits. Then it fades into the opening bar scene were the two men talk to the bartender, have a drink, and smoke a cigar. The bar's name is "Blue Eyes" after Frank Sinatra's nickname, so I guess a Sinatra song would work well here.

The hitmen get the call, while at the bar, about their next target. They start to discuss it, when the bar tender ask if they need another person. They agree but he has to complete a test first. They tell the bartender to kill a man who has just walked into the bathroom. So the bartender pulls out a chainsaw and walks into the bathroom to kill the guy. He come back out, bloody chainsaw and all.

The hitmen congratulate him and they go off to a back room to snort some concaine. And that is all we've been able to complete.

Thanks for helping!

Sounds like a helluva lotta fun!

Okay off the top of my head for a cool swingy Sinatra tune you could try "Summer Wind" with out a vocal track. I have a version by the Boston Pops ochestra that is just music. I love it and I've been wanting to use it for a few different scenes for movie ideas I have. Without the vocals it would serve as a much more subtle nod to whole bar being a sort of Franky tribute.

I work in a classical radio station so I've got access to thousands of CD's. I'll do a little more investigating and see if I can come up with some more examples if you like.

I assume you're doing this independantly? Home project? That's cool man, I wish I had the type of friends that were more into making short films and stuff.

Anyway good luck!

Actually it's a project for one of my brother's classes. He's in a film class and the whole bases of the class is to make a movie. It doesn't have to be done until June so there is a lof of time. And since he can't be in it, he comissioned me and some of my buddies to help make it.

But thanks for the help, Summer Wind is a great song, I didn't think about that. My dad has a ton of CD's with the older music on it, so I've been listening to them to get some ideas.

Oh well either way have fun doing it. I don't know if you or your brother either knows or cares but a great website for the budgeted film maker is:

www.beckerfilms.com

There's a 5 part "The complete guide to Low-budget feature film making" book that has loads of insightful and useful information.

Another plus to it is its Michigans own Josh Becker. Director and friend of Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell.

Anyway it's a great site to check out to augment anything your brother will learn in class.

Wow after just looking at that site for a few minutes I can already tell there is a ton of usefull information on there. Thanks for the link I'll be sure to look at in more detail.
