Or is it the SL65? They look pretty much the same if you ask me.

How do you tell teh differnce between engine sizes without checking out the back/under bonnet

I ain't much of a Merc fan.

Thats not a Merc. Mercury makes the Cougar, Marquee, etc. not SL55's.

The bumper.......that's how you tell... The front bumper on the SL55 doesn't have a little "gull" the Sl65 does....Look at the mbusa site and you'll see what I mean.

No SL55. You've got an SL500/600. For almost any Mercedes they offer 'AMG aero package' or whatever they title it. It includes the wheels, front splitter and other parts off the the real AMG cars, but no performance gains. The truth lies on the text in the back. It really pisses me off though. I'm like "Sweet! S55!" and it rolls by and it's a S500 4Matic...

SL55 tail lights are smoked out and has the words V8Kompressor above the little grille behind the front wheels. I htink the smoked tails wraps the deal though.

SL55s are sold in the USA. Keep your eyes open. I see them regularly. And both SL55 and 65 are on the MBUSA site...

In Europe, or atleast the UK, or at the very least me, Merc = Mercedes.

Why? Mercury doesn't sell over here.

Thanks for the info Drifster and ER 👍

The cars are somewhat common, here in California, at least. Which is surprising because the car can cost upwards of 130K USD... And that's just the base price for a standard (no options) non-AMG version. For that much I'd rather buy a used 97 - 00 NSX! And still have money left over for other things.... like gas. :) Granted the NSX can't compare the the SHEER speed and brute force of the SL series... it's still a cool car in its own right.
The new SLK ain't bad either.

But each to their own!

You should change car lots considering a base SL500 starts at $92,000 US.

SL500 with AMG Sport Package

Base price exactly $94000. Nothing special there. (not that SLs aren't cool!)

By the way, if you ever want to tell them apart but can't spot the trunk, here's how it's done:

On either side, there is a small grille behind either front wheel. You can see it in the posted picture pretty well. That grille has a badge in it signifying engine size:

V8: SL500 ($88800)
V8 KOMPRESSOR: SL55 ($120100)
V12: SL600 ($126300)
V12 BITURBO: SL65 ($182100)

Wheels tell the whole story too, but I can't even find half the images necessary to show that on Google Images, so I'm not bothering. These things are tough to call but I'm sure on this one.

PS - I've seen exactly one SL65.

I don't think that the SL500's get the V8 in the side grille. The AMG 55's get V8 Kompressor above the grille, and the 600 gets V12 IN the little grille. I haven't seen any 65's, so I can't say anything about that. But as I recall, the 65 has some pretty distinctive wheels.

They might not. Sorry! SL500s have become commonplace up here - multiple sightings daily. Even SL55s aren't that rare. And SL600s are a weekly thing. The popularity of those models must have Mercedes pretty stoked.

i've seen a sl55amg and it looks that one, but the rearlights are darker... or maybe it looks like their darker, the car was black...
and merc=mercedes in europe...

Different alloys (wheels)

The wheels won't always tell you. The AMG wheels are also included in the AMG appearance package, so you'll see them on SL500 or 600s, not exclusive to the two digit cars. I think there are some high-end wheel options only available to the 55s, not ever seen on the 500s, like the fancy turbine ones or whatev.

The AMG package does NOT add AMG wheels, just different wheels. The wheels pictured are those from the SL500's AMG package. SL600 adds chrome to those. Stock wheels on the SL500 are pretty subdued.

On another note, I saw my second SL65 today!

I have seen AMG packaged cars with 5-spoke wheels, with the stretched AMG logo running down a spoke. I know for sure that they were on a normal MB, as I thought like you posted, and I noticed the AMG wheels. I thought it was indeed an AMG car when it was the package after all (text on bootlid told me).

We are arguing over wheel options. I'm gonna go eat some food....

The vast majority (93-95%) of SL55s will be carrying these wheels:

I believe all models with the wheels you described are SL500s, along with a very small portion of SL55s.
