monitor help please

Making this short.

I was just surfing the web when my comp. froze up. When I restarted it, the comp came on, but the monitor stayed in stand by mode. So, even though I have been messing with the cables and searching Google, I cant find any solution for this. Any help is greatly appreciated b/c Im currently reduced to using my iPod to find the answer.

The monitor comes on when the comp does but the screen's light goes from blue to orange 3 seconds afterwards. If I press any buttons, the screen comes on saying "Monitor going to sleep". The comp will make sounds like its starting up as well.

The screen says there is no DVI signal input when there normally is.
 
I had this same problem a few days ago and it was to do with the motherboards boot sequence... Turn it on and nothing happens...

If its not booting into BIOS then the CMOS needs to be reset, this can be done on most modern motherboards by finding the CMOS jumper switch or tab and sliding it to the clear mode...(read the motherboard manual)...

Then boot, if something does come on it may say cmos error or something, dont mind that, just turn the computer off and put the CMOS jumper back to normal then turn it back on...

You may need to reset the clock and stuff like that but it should then be fine...

If this doesnt work it could be a number of things from the HDD, PSU or even loose wires... Sometimes the PSU is giving up the ghost and not suppling enough voltage to start the boot sequence.. You could try removing some power hungry no essential components and boot again..

Does anyone know if the bios startup can be affected by a faulty or corrupt MBR (major boot record) on a HDD? Because that might be the problem.

If your HDD hasnt been defraged or maybe has a virus this can happen..

read the book that came with the motherboard? what book? in my experience, they don't even provide the program disks anymore, let alone the Ephemera. hope it's easy to spot.

I've had this happen a couple times as well. i had to hotboot to get things working again (shut off the multitap that powers the whole thing). at least it isn't the same as what happened with our first one...the DC converter blew up :P (bloody lightning)
 
You've tried the monitor with another source to be sure it's a computer problem and not a monitor problem?
 
Do you have a vga-in and output? Output on your video card and an input on your monitor. If you have these and you have a vga-cable, try and see if this works. If so than the DVI input on your screen is "kaputt" or the DVI output on your video card is "kaputt".
If the vga-ouput on your vga-card is still working and your monitor is working using the vga-input, I guess the DVI input on your monitor is "kaputt".

Alternatively, doesn't the computer makes certain beeping sounds that are not normal? Usually if there is a BIOS problem or something wrong with the hardware for whatever reason the motherboard will make some beeping noises to indicate what the problem is. The only problem with that is that you will have to do a google search for the motherboard unit and find the beeping patterns and then correlate it to the databases for that particular beeping pattern fault finding thing.

Its kinda complex....but at least it'll help you to identify the problem with confidence, rather than blindly going out and buying a graphic card that may or may not actually work.

However I understand that the motherboards are supposed to use the internal speakers. But some will beep on the external sound card as well. So just check this one first....

We've been able to determine that it is the card. Unhappily, we've also learned that one of the Raid backup HD failed. The support line says we might have to do a system recovery which ticks me off because I have over 600 personal pictures I don't want to lose.
 
So wait, it was the card and the HDD, man thats a bummer....

System recovery shouldnt wipe your photos but I still think as Kikie said there is probably a way to copy them over to another HDD...
