So, I'm back in love with GT5 after my, now pretty predictable, attempt to stop playing every few months. I play with just about no driving aids but my question to you, GT5 faithfuls, is which driving aids setup provides the most exciting and realistic experience?

It is all very subjective and there is no finite answer.

However, these are my personal and subjective guidelines for "my GT5 realistic setting" I am using. Notice I play with 900-degree FFB wheel.

Wheel Options (under Options menu)
- Simulation (despite it is functionality for 200-degree wheels, but nevertheless)
- Active Steering - OFF

In game driving assists
- all assists OFF
- Manual transmission
- ABS OFF (manual adjusting brake-bias for every car is necessary)
- controller sensitivity on default (0) - although is has nothing to do with wheel, but nevertheless

Pre-race track condition settings (where applicable)
- Tyre Wear/Fuel depletion - ON
- Track surface grip - Real

Tyre Choice - most crucial for "realistic setting"
I am successfully using this chart from GT5:Prologue (became very *contemporary* after 2.08 update) in order to determine the accurate tyre-compound for particular "type" of the vehicle. Chart covers only small number of vehicles, but it is a great starting-point for choosing compounds over default-ones.

Very useful table, but I think some of them might not apply to GT5 (the table was GT5P). Not sure about the Acura NSX having N1 tyres as "normal" grip because you'd be all over the place :D .

Same with the Elises. I can't get any grip, with C2 (N2) nor C3 (N3). Nevertheless, - a very useful chart!

Sorry for my ignorance, but I'm confused about ABS being an aid and to a lesser extent TC. Take a stock BMW m3 or m5, can these actually be disabled in the real cars or should they be turned off in the sim to give the car a more "realistic" feel?

Reason a lot of people say to turn ABS off is because in GT5 ABS has hidden stability factors in it. My whole car feels different when turning off and on while on my G27.

I honestly hate ABS in real life and in the game. Pretty much any real life car i get into it want it off. It is pointless to me. Specially in snow abs doesn't do anything

I am not sure if this is true, but here is another post from a member about controller sensitivity affecting his steering wheel :

I know this is an old thread, i was just searching and found it but it hasn't seemed to have ended with much factual information.

In Gran Turismo, the steering lock on your wheel is set to 900 degrees for all cars, however, the front wheel turning angle is set correctly to correspond with the steering wheel lock. The F1 cars feel very good and drivable to me after the spec 2 update. Just because the steering wheel turns a full 900° doesn't mean that the steering ratio is increased in the F1's.

In real F1 cars the steering ratio is fully adjustable within a certain range, meaning you can adjust how much the steering wheel turns and how much the front wheels turn, some drivers like Fernando Alonso and his team mate Massa both prefer a higher ratio (more steering). This is somewhat possible in GT5 by adjusting the steering sensitivity within the "Driving Options" in the track menu.

Here's a video of me with the T500 with F1 wheel doing a seasonal event at the Nurburgring 24H layout. I have all the driving aids turned off, this includes the ABS at 0, the steering sensitivity is at 0 as well and i actually prefer it this way because it allows for more precision, it feels like the front wheel angle is about 14/15° at 390/400° steering lock, which is realistic. If you increase steering sensitivity, it increases the front wheel angle while maintaining the same steering wheel lock which shortens the ratio, same effect as in real life:

Also, as a visual reference, look at this video of Fernando at the Ferrari test track in the F10:

Just did some testing, and found out the lower the steering sensitivity, the less you have to turn a wheel to do a turn. -2 did sharp corners with a lot less turning of the wheel when compared to 7 at Monza, I thought it was the other way around, so I now have a way to get faster lap times.

At least now I know you can change it, with the f1 car I had to crank that thing to get through the first chicane.

This has helped me and a buddy with G27's out immensely!! Good call on the info!!

I'll test this later today on my G27. See if it does

That's the "subjective" part of what's realistic. Although cars in real life have ABS, the general consensus in GT5 is that ABS in the game is more of an advantage than it would be in real life, it has more stability built in. Up to you to decide what you want to do, as I think the game with No ABS is also not realistic either. I've driven many cars without ABS and cant' recall any of them where you can depress the brake pedal an inch and lock up the tires other than on ice.

6 of one, half dozen of the other, you have to do whatever you think is best.
