Well in that case, I wonder if there is a simple way to limit the number of total guests allowed on the board at a time. It could be dropped to something like 20 and still be functional.

how about a trial period or time limit? I mean sure it's good to have new members but then the people who actually sign up have to put up with slow loads because of too may guests and google bots....
