Congrats! You've made it just in time for the financial meltdown! Here is your parting gift!

...More news as it gets here...

YSSMAN's initial thoughts?

It looks as though they crossed a Cadillac with a Mercedes and just for the hell of it threw a bunch of creases down the side. Not that they didn't pull it off, it looks great, but the interior quality in that picture looks extremely questionable. What gives?

Why is the rear shot a picture of a Mitsubishi Galant?

Front is not a shock, since we’ve already seen it on the ConceptFASCINATION. The stubby Audi LEDS are out of place though.

BTW, I’m amazed at how Mercedes has managed to make its new interiors look straight from the late ’80s/early ’90s.

I don't think I've seen woodgrain that looks that bad since the mid '90s in a Toyota Land Cruiser. It looks absolutely dreadful.

Did you notice what the position of the accelerator is? EWWWW. That just screams old fashion. I feel sorry for whoever decides to buy it.

Direct flash is unflattering for any interior. You'll have to wait to see it in a more natural light. Even the prettiest socialites look like washed-out drug addicts in a paparazzi's strobe-flash... and that's what's happening with the merc's interior.

But given this caveat... that's an awfully blocky thing it has going there... so... so... 80s! (Okay, so I was beaten to it... I still had to say it...)

I don't mind the exterior... you've got to do something to look different nowadays... and you're still going to look the same as something else, whatever that something else is... still, it's not bad looking... a little CLS in the roof-line, some neo-classical touches in the way the rear haunches curve (much like you'd expect on a Jag), and the twin headlights reference the older E-Class while still echoing newer Merc products.

It just looks terrible in gold... as that color muddies up all the chrome brightwork and clever shaping around the lights.

Is this the first time in hitory a German manafacturer has taken a styling cue from the Japanese instead of vice-versa. Note headlights...

That thing looks like a Cadillexusfiniti. WTF.

Edit:

Exactly what I was thinking, too. I'd have expected from the Asian car makers, but not "the" Mercedes. This is almost funny to me, because I wished Lexus would just copy the Benz all the way, and stop using those weird GS/Aristo(?) headlamp layouts. This is just great. Not that I can afford those cars anyway!

I'm sorry, but I don't see how you can top the outgoing E-class.

Eh? I may have misunderstood but how is the position of the accelerator pedal old fashioned? What's wrong with it? It's just the same as in any other Merc, or any BMW or any other car with a floor-hinged pedal.

What's happened with Merc's design studio - it looks like a Chinese Maybach rip-off :yuck:

Mercedes have always produced safe, inoffensive but solid designs. This is just a blingy mess.

I like the front... likely to look good in E63 AMG format. Rear is very bland. Interior from that photo looks awful... very 80's in it's angularity.

IMO, wood has no place in a car... boats maybe, but not cars (Rolls Phantom convertible teak rear deck excluded... that just reminds me of a Riva).

I disagree. Plenty of car makers have done wood well. Even Mercedes, though it's a talent they seem to have lost. Look at this excercise in restraint in an old 450SL:

Or this, in a Fiat 850 coupe, which is classic Italian use of wood. Or this Lancia Fulvia. Wood definitely has a place in car interiors, it just has to be used the right way, which isn't what Merc have done with the hopeless example above...

That thing is, to put it simply, bloody awful.

I think the trouble with this photo is that it's been heavily edited, probably because the original image was either very poor quality or taken in very dark conditions. Looking at some of the highlights in the photo, the shot has been taken with a flash through a closed window, the original probably has reflections obscuring things. They've had a go at cleaning it up, but it's a pretty poor job to be honest. They should have just published the original photo.

Mercedes have been using wood trim for ever. Well, wood-look plastic anyway.

Sorry, I should have said modern cars... it has been very done well in cars of the 50/60's but we're in the 21st century now:)

Oh and another thought... 'stick on' brown plastic is not wood!

Special mention goes to manufacturers who can make real wood look like plastic, and commendation goes to those who can make plastic look like real wood.

Bonus points must go to Facel Vega in that case for making metal look like wood.

You´re probably right about the edit, but the photo hasn´t been taken through a window. If it was, you wouldn´t be able to see the far right side of the dash.
But nonetheless, it´s hideous!

I can apprecite wood in interiors, but this is just plain ugly. Probably due the colourcobminations though. Other options may look far better. Change the beige to dark grey, and it will look way more attractive IMO. The red wouldn´t jump at you out so much.

Ah, so it is 👍 The shadowing on the lower left side of the dash and the steering wheel look to me as if colour has been added to a black and white photo. But why would anyone take a non-artistic B&W photo these days.....

That thing is RANK! Must've been serving some bad schnitzel at the Mercedes cafeteria that day...

Mercedes has seriously slipped from very elegant to downright putrid in the last half-decade. The pre-facelift SL was killer, and the current C-class sedan is stellar, but they've drowned themselves in ornament and confusing and unpleasant graphics past any remorse.

Wow, I like that interior for how light and unobtrusive it looks. I agree with the "retro" comments -- the '80s-style angles are sweet, and for once you don't have to tuck your feet under a bulky underdash. It's like they trimmed all the fat out of the typical modern car interior.

The exterior I like, but not as much. They screwed up on the headlights -- just a little experimentation with other shapes and they could have prevented the car from looking like a Lexus wannabe.

That's what I was wondering.

Every MB is like that, dude. The gas pedals are stiff on all of them, too. Feels like you're pushing floor.

To be fair to the car (particularly the interior), it looks quite a bit like whoever edited it turned the contrast and sharpness way the hell up. Looking closely makes it seem like it was done with all of the photos, so I'm guessing this may look much better when we get to see actual photos of it.

Am I the only one who thinks the overall design is a bit of a relief? I am very glad that Mercedes didn't try to over design the thing and went with a basic seeming shape. The details up front are a little killer though. The headlights and fog lights are a little bothersome IMO. But we'll see in the final version. And that little strake above the wheel is a little weird, but I'm guessing that's what's keeping the car from looking like it's running 18" wheels up front and 16s in back, like many other new cars. Out back, the headlights are a little big, but I still think it looks great. Good work Mercedes by going the simpler route instead of putting 50 billion conflicting curves on a frame.

Personally, I'd still take the current model though. That car looks fantastic, and Mercedes kinda had their backs pinned to the wall when it came to designing something to surpass that.

As for the interior, I'll wait until I see studio shots or something better than that. That picture looks like it was taken out of a plastic scale model.
