Hey all,

i was wondering if I was able to turn my Acer Aspire 5920G mouse trackpad into one of the awesome new multitouch trackpads.

I already searched for new driver's that may support my trackpad but haven't found anything.

Perhaps someone here could help me and others out.

Thanks

Chris

As far as I am aware (and from my quick bit of research) this seems to be tech limited to OS X devices? I'm yet to come across any windows application for multitouch track pads. Apologies if I am incorrect though.

hmmm, are you saying that there aren't any windows multi touch trackpads? - correct me if im wrong but all the new Windows 7 laptops have 2 fringer scroll and left & right swipes , etc...

My ASUS laptop has multitouch; but some of the gestures just don't seem to work like they should. For example swiping from side to side with three fingers should load previous and next pages, but it doesn't. Also the rotate gesture doesn't work.

Stay away from anything multitouch within Windows. No one comes even close to how good the Apple touchpads are.

From what I have read since my post Apple have patented the mutitouch software and hardware (although the article is out of date by several years), this article however does explain what I have said and also what you are looking for via an application.

Edit: Bram's given some good info that I wasn't as aware of 👍

Even my slower-than-molasses Asus 1101HA Eee PC has a multi-touch trackpad and it's rocking Windows XP to top it off. Definitely not limited to OS X or even Windows 7.

Then I am proven wrong, my apologies for the misleading info. I shall have to research a lot more next time

Meh, when I first used this laptop it was nice being able to scroll through pages with a simple gesture. But it all feels just way too cheap. No matter how you set the sensitivity of the trackpads, there just is no smoothness in the movements, and the tracking seems to be very unreliable and inaccurate. Every time I switch from my mate's MacBook Pro to my own laptop again, the trackpad just is a horrible thing to use. Windows computers have a long way to go before they're anywhere near how Mac trackpads currently feel like.

Luckily I tend to carry my wireless mouse where ever my laptop goes.

i know, these apple products just have amazing built quality!

However, can i download somewhere software or drivers to enable multi touch on my old laptop?

The first link I posted had some software to enable it. I guess I got swept away using my Macbook

Compared to what's out there the PC laptop build quality has gotten better. Though your laptop has decent hardware for it's age. Well I just read this from here:

You may not:

Work around or gain access to any restricted or inactivated features or other technical limitations in the software;

Simply put, modifying or installing Synaptics software not intended for your laptop is illegal. Best thing I would suggest is to look for the latest updates from Acer.

@Bram: Those features work on my Asus N series laptop(3 years and going). Make sure you check that the features are enabled.

@Soloracer3: My Asus laptop has the same two finger up and down scroll feature plus more if I wanted to.

@Nick, I feel as if you read that wrong. What that sounds like to me is they don't want you to add code to the software they're giving you. Not what was given on the computer.

Well when I posted my last post I meant to say that you can't activate any features, if present in the code, that would add to the product. Which is the "Work around or gain access to any restricted or inactivated features" part.

and of course i downloaded it and it doesnt work. As soon as i open the two finger scroll programm it gives the "no kernel driver for synaptics mouse found" error.

I checked and i have 110% sure a synaptics mouse pad and i have the latest drivers installed.

Windows being windows i suppose... would have been nice if it worked but anyways once the new macbooks are out in summer ill be buying one

Chris

Well try a PC laptop like Asus at a retail store. Most of the laptops should have those features and you can try them out for yourself at the store. Your laptop is just at the age where PC laptops never could track more than one finger. Here's a video that shows one of the laptops which have it:

Even a budget K series has the feature too:
