It's already $3.50 in quite a few areas, if you plan on keeping whatever vehicle you are buying for an extended period of time you need to think about these things.

I'm not sure where you live, but if it's in a region that snow you also need to think about your driving ability with a big, heavy car with what I assume is no ABS and is RWD.

Not that heavy if he goes for a 1988 SS model, they only weigh 3200lbs. Not that bad, if I can drive my Camaro in the snow/ice with RWD, no traction contol, and no ABS anyone can learn.

I don't live in any city limits. That's part of what keeps it down. It's 4.60 a gallon for 87 octane down in the Palm Beach city limits.

Yet you still get Diesel 30 cents cheaper than we do. 👍 Nearly $5 a gallon here for that stuff.

Are the EPA estimates for mpg's on the SS Monte Carlo the same as for the '87 Grand National?

Exactly. Just proves they are rich to live there. AND they drive around their Escalades getting 10 mpg.

SS is a V8 and GN is a V6, that's right. But the GN gets 15 city/19 hwy so it's a good comparison.

Don't quote me on it, but the only site mentioning mileage and mote carlo on the same page stated 18/27mpg. Couldn't even find where it said that on the site, but in that sentence it had Monte Carlo, 303hp, and that mileage quote

That's the last gen Monte Carlo with the V8. The old ones get 16ish city and 27ish highway.

Nope, unless you could find a Mexican version which came with a 4-speed and Hurst shifter

My 700R4 in my Camaro is pretty solid--GM's 4spd automatics are actually quite good--and I prefer them over the Ford 4psd boxes at that time.

I'm lookin' for ones later in that generation because if I go down that road at all, a 21 year old car is better than a 27 year old car, so that means what I'd prefer has the 4 spd =]

Actually, you need to get somehting 25 years old or older--you won't have to worry about emissions because they are exempt. This is why I want a 1984 Trans-Am/Firebird as my next project.

What do you mean by emissions exempt? I'm lookin for a reliable first car, that's my idea of getting the younger of that generation

The insurance on a Supra will break your budget. I almost bought one of those (1 1991 model) but the insurance would of been too high. Young kids and Supras don't mix well with insurance companes.

Alot of old cars fail--but there is a section in that law that exempts vehicles 25 years old or older from even getting tested. And it can be technically classified as a classic (I think anyway--that or 30 years old for the classic thing). Stick with old American V8 reliability--your gas mileage may not be as high (which cannot always be the case) but the car will last forever.

Supras break down a lot too don't they? Either way, their life is shorter because they are turbo. Have you driven a Miata yet?

Nah, not yet. I can't really drive anything yet because my lisense doesn't come untill october. Dealers don't like kids with permits test driving their stuff...

Just find a nice old lady who owns one (shouldn't be hard) and seeing as you are genuinely interested ask to take it for a test drive checking for faults. Take your father of course so she knows you aren't kidding.

Almost forgot about those. I'm a bit blinded seeing as in the past 2 weeks 2 old ladies (crown vic and accord) have nearly taken the front end off the mustang.

Yes I can see that, because "boring" Buicks and older Cadillacs are pretty much designed just for them. Go back to a GN and well And of course the new CTS They're not old people cars.

There's a midget old lady shops where I work and can't see over the dash of her Fit. As a driver, she scares me, she should stop driving immediately because from what I've gathered about her she's not right in the head any more.

The V6 Fbodies aren't that bad in 3rd gen trim (82-92). What's awsome about the fuel injected ones (basically all of them 1985+) is they can be turbo'd quite easily and made quite fast--and I don't mean a little faster than the stock V8 models but honest-to-goodness fast.

I'm looking more at 4th gen because they are more common, but I do like the 3rd gen also. Heheh
