From the rumors I've been hearing, the Kabura is definitely in line for production the same way the Evolv > RX-8 was.

It's sounding like they will offer a choice of Rotary or Boinger engines (which pleases me, because whilst I love a spinner, I'd rather not pay $3 for 16 miles, but the option of an easy swap in/out later on would be cool) and that beautiful styling?

Oh that beautiful styling.

It should stay mostly intact. Sub $20k to start, and 2008 Model Year sounds most likely.

I think calling it an MX-3 would be a good idea, it would certainly give the MX-3 a much needed image boost - have you seen the plebs that drive them these days?!? :sly:

Only someone that lived somewhere that no-one else could see them drive it, say the Yorkshire Dales, could drive one.

N.b. Famine Are you afraid that a new model will push down the price of the older model?

I always thought it was a 2ltr? - perhaps i'm getting mixed up with the Xedos 6?

The Mazda K-series family of V6s are:

K8 - 135hp, 1845cc V6 (MX-3)
KF - 160hp, 1995cc V6 (323, Xedos 6, Xedos 9)
KJ - 217hp, 2300cc V6 supercharged Miller Cycle (Xedos 9)
KL - 167hp (DE)/205hp (ZE), 2497cc V6 (MX-6, Ford Probe, 626)

Though the Japanese market saw a 1.6 V6 in one of the Mitsubishi Lancers (later developed into a 2.0 V6 for the FTO), the MX-3 has the smallest capacity V6 ever released in a production car on the world stage.

Well, An MX-6 would be kind of odd, as this is supposed to be sub Miata price to start, and without a V-6.

MX-3/RX-3 for Rotary/Four Banger would be a great little lineup addition I think, making a Rotary entry car to please everyone wanting a Miata with a Renesis, and the option to get the same beautiful body with an MZ engine (like me, I'd love an RX-8 with the Mazdaspeed 6's engine.)

They said time and time again "It will not be an RX-7" and it will be a small car, with three "real" seats, MX-3/RX-3 seems fitting.

It's just resurrecting names for no good reason.

Toyota intend to make a new Supra... Mazda intend to make a new MX-3... leave them alone, guys. They lived their lives, leave them rest in peace - otherwise we reach a point like the Corolla - 98,217,359,871 completely different models, but because they all have the same name it's all the same car and they rack up twelve umpty jillion sales.

How is a rotary-engined, RWD car any relation to the original V6, FWD one? It isn't, so think up a new name, bulbguys. Call it the Mazda4 or something.

I LOVE this car but WTF were they thinking with a 3 seat config that's not like a McLaren F1?? I mean that's the only reason I could've seen for a three seat config.

Oh thank god it won't be called an RX-7. SO many Mazda Dealer's who know nothing keep saying it will be. If it was, it'd be such a disgrace to the 7 line.

Well some you think its ugly but I'm thinking its quite nice looking. Especially when the production model rolls out. I'm thinking it'll have the traditional Mazda "wing" like headlights, a standard roof and windshield. a more potent motor to go along with it, and who wouldn't want a cheap small rear wheel drive coupé?

Why would that be? Considering the original RX7's were naturally aspirated, light and simple RWD sports cars (compared to the twin turbocharged (but still light (oooh, triple parentheses!)) monsters the last ones were), I think it would be appropriate.

RX3/MX3 would be better, but then Famine doesn't want his badge put on a rear-wheeler (c'mon, most people would be incensed if it went the other way around... like with the Impala... ) and old RX3s don't have quite the same spirit as the Kabura.

I don't think Mazda can fall back on its numerical naming conventions if they do offer a choice of rotary or bangers... they ought to just call it "Kabura" or maybe "Arrow" (?) for the US market.

I'd buy one. :D

Precisely - spirit.

Reuse a name for a car nothing like the original and you lose the spirit of the name. Which is why we have today's Corollas - utterly soulless, bland, grey, stamped-out 3-boxers. It just becomes a name and not a car.

I'm sure the new car will be great, but the only thing it'd share with the old MX-3 is the badge - and not even that, since Mazda changed to the wing device from the diamond just after they stopped building the MX-3. Besides which, it was called MX-3 because it was 323-based. The MX-5 isn't based on a Mazda 1/2/3/6 series vehicle so gets its own sobriquet - and this car is similarly not based on another Mazda, so should get its own too.

Spot on.

Unfortunately, they've used up all the numbers between 2 and 6. I doubt BMW would be happy about Mazda having its own 1-series.... and 4... just doesn't sound right for a non-AWD 2 door.

Like the Miata, this car deserves a name, not a number. :)

I think the name 'Mazda Malcolm' has a good ring to it (its certainly better than Nissan Cedric!!!)

That's great, I laughed outloud when I read that. 👍 :)

Actually, this is based heavily on the MX-5, think of it as a hardtop Miata, with 3 seats.

3 seats...hmmm....+1....like a +1 item in a game...MX-3+1 anyone?
