Sorry to tell you but if you don't have a backup then there's no way of recovering your old save.

well that sucks, i was lv 33 A spec and 26 B spec, it's not redoing the events that's the problem, that will be easy, and I have made some stupid mistakes with my credits (brought and fully tuned some really crap cars), it's the grinding, and I did get some cool cars for the random tickets, well aint nothing to it but to do it, *restarts from scratch*

Next time you're in the supermarket look for a cheapo USB stick. Back up your save. It's worth a coupla quid!

This is exactly what I do. I have a permanent USB stick in the front of my PS3 so I can create a backup everytime I go on it. That way, if it breaks or anything bad happens, I'll have a physical backup of it.

You can also use it to try out new/expensive cars too... ;)

I too have a permanent usb in mine. Sorry for your loss. My condolences go out to you. Haha.

Anyway yeah I saw too many of these things happen so I now always back up my game.

You don't have to buy a USB stick, you can make a back up save by creating an alternative account & backing up your gamesave to that account. This saved me when my game crashed while saving. I just copied over my back up to my main account & Bob's Yer uncle :)

How do you do that, out of interest?

You just create a new user and copy the savegame to it (on your savegame->triangle etc.), this won't help when your PS3 breaks though. When you are a PS+ member you can also use the cloud server back-up.
