I had my doubts, but after a few days of checking it out, I am left in awe. WiFi anyone? Great feature, and already have him hooked up to my wireless network for internet play and firmware updates. I’m sure there’s going to be (probably already out there) software for browsing the net, checking emails, ect. Graphic quality is awesome although the glare on the screen from being so glossy can be a problem. Scratch protectors might help with this. With 512mb memory sticks being the largest available size at my local stores, storage seems lacking, but I know that larger storage options are just around the corner. It would be nice if you could have alteast 2GB’s for all your favorite mp3’s ect. Haven’t watched a movie on it yet, but the demo disk was impressive. No graphical anomalies that I could see. After loading some mp3’s as well as custom pics for slide shows, my wife would even like one now. I’m looking forward to possibly getting a couple more down the road, one for me and my wife as well for some multiplayer portability. Pretty cool feature. The menu system is easy to navigate and it’s “cool” looking as well. It was a major toss up between the DS and PSP in this case, and the PSP just seemed to be more versatile making the extra cost justifiable. So, if you have to portability and want more than just a hand held console, you might want to look at the PSP. Looking for PSP mods…..;)

[edit]
Just discovered that Working Emulators Such as MIME as well as a suite of other emulators for "other" portable systems. This is of course to play strickly legal ROM's. Internet browsing is also available with a modified version of Wipeout's browser. Interesting developments for such a young product. Good things are instore, I believe for this portable entertainment box.

1GB Sticks for $99

grrrrrrrrr us brits have to wait till the 1st of september for the PSP and reading tht just then wants me to fly over to america right now and go buy one

Sounds great Pako! PSPs are only available in Australia on 1st September which is still a while away. :( I am seriously debating buying one, but some downsides are that I have over 6GB of music and already have an iPod. Are the games/other features good enough to make this a great purchase in my situation? (is internet access a serious possibility in the future)

Yeah I can't wait to get one. It sucks to wait until September 1st to get one. I've preordered mine so I'm guranteed to get one on the day of release. :)

I asked the staff in Game why it's taking so long for the PSP to be released, and they said Sony is fixing some bugs people have encountered. Well at least we'll get the better verson. :)

Fixing bugs - Good one Sony... They've been releasing bug fixed OS versions since the PSPs release - including one the 25th to fix yet another exploit :D

What I think they're doing is sorting out the problems with capping the CPU at 222mhz instead of running at it's full speed 333mhz.

So that means we could potentially be getting a better PSP over here! Meh i can wait then..

It is possible right now with the Wipeout game that comes with a browser, but you have to have the game. I see a application independent of any games coming out in the future, of course taking up Precious Memory card space. UMD-R's anyone?

Sony's smart, downclock the CPU.....let every create exploits, release a new firmware update (can't uninstall) to up the CPU speed and lock down ALL the exploits. So, run a slower PSP with exploits, or run a faster PSP with no exploits. Pretty smart if it's intentional.

I think so long as you can't circumvent having to purchase games, they won't be overly concerned with the exploits. It's when it starts costing them money that they're not happy about it.

you can order magic gate pro sticks that go into GB intervals.

Thanks for the report, Pako. A PSP is on the radar screen (especially if we can MIME our Pokemon GBA games to it), but we're waiting for more game selection to come out. We would not likely buy many movies for it and we have an iPod so it would primarily be a gamer for us.

Can you adopt me Pako :p

Like all the rest of the brits here, i'm pining for PSP action. It's nice to know that they're so widely excepted, shouldn't be too hard to find people to play wirelessly against.

It's only 2months and 2days away from getting released PAL side. We're getting WIFI at home this summer, (convinient), you can play some games online right? We should try to get a GTP gaming session or two setup so we can race/battle each other online :)

Lucky kid.👍 Great gift, I just wished I had one...BTW there are already ways to hack the PSP to browse the web.

Congradulations you're starting him off early, in no time he will be cursing on X box live saying pwned at every one up statement and writing in letters to the editer to computer magazines over miss spelling the brand name of fan they used

Hehe my dad bought me a psp a few days ago and it is great. the screen is awesome with a bit of ghosting and i already put an NES and SNES emulator on it. ive heard that the procesor is downclocked so it doesn't overheat because the SNES emu lets you choose a clock speed(222mhz, 266mhz, and 333mhz).

and drifster just be quiet, go to a DS(I have one of those) forum or something and badmouth the PSP with other PSP haters.

But remember we get more for are money, once its out plus this will give Sony time to make a battery to use PSP's full power.

I just hope the limited edition white GT4 PSP will come out in the UK I hope.

That's what I thought, but I've also heard it might be delayed because of shortage of PSP's or fixing bugs. I personaly believe what you think, making a battery so the full power of the PSP can be unleashed.

Why would I go to a DS forum? I'm not a PSP hater because of rival handhelds, i'ma PSP hater because it's ere-ere-eretarded

Please enlighten us here. My wife wants to pick one up for me now for our anniversary this weekend. Please tell me what's so wrong with this hand held. Sony's got a reputation for having the best overall games (that I enjoy) on the market. This thing can also store all my favorite pics of my children and wife. I can play my mp3's and mpeg's through it. I can even check my email with it and emulate every other handheld on the planet. And if I get backed in a corner, it's big enough to beat someone with it. So tell me why you don't like the PSP? I'm trying to find a reason not to like it.

Do tell.

What cons I do see are:
  • Cost (will go down. or buy used)
  • Expensive Games (will go down, or buy used)
  • Expensive UMD movies (will go down, or buy used)
  • Non-Recordable UMD media (don't know if this will ever change)
  • Storage Limitations (so far 1gb sticks are the biggest, but I'm sure they're SanDisk is working on a larger solution.

What does make me a little nervous is the fact it's a little laser in there. Is there going to be calibration issues because it's going to get a lot more abuse than a console that sits on the floor or in a cabinet.

Can you browse the internet on it?

The game Wipeout comes with a browser. There are also hacks based on that same web browsing, as well as keyboard hacks for easier browser is my understanding.

I just wondered because it would be cool to post here while I'm not at my computer.

I imagine that typing out full sentences would become a tedious task pretty quick with one click at a time, but from what I understand, there are also PSP emulators for your desktop so you can setup URL favorites on your PC and upload them to your PSP so you don't have to type out all the URL's.

Do you have to buy software/hardware to be able to browse the internet? How much is it too. I'm a little short of money so I hope it isn't too much to pay!

From what I understand all you need is:

Access to a WiFi connection and the game Wipeout and these instructions. I might add I have seen other instructions as well which can be googled.

It be kool if you could use the Wi-Fi and the internet browsering to track down fellow my mates by PSP.

Think of it me using a bit of software to track down GT so I could meet him.

Now that would be cool. :D

Kind of like those cell phones... That would be cool. Of couse, it's pretty easy to tell if someone around you is playing a PSP, however, if it would try to connect you saying that you had the same game loaded for some multiplayer gaming....that could be pretty cool to.
