My Boy Turned 13, a PSP seemed appropriate.

I'm a proud PSP owner (imported one from Japan.)

I have hacked the wipeout browser but I find browsing the web on my phone easier and faster (it is a p910i so it also has a qwerty keypad.) The PSP has exceptional graphics and amazing movie playback and sound quality.

However its greatest feature is its analog stick, it does not stick out however slides in all directions comfortably, I could end up prefering it to that on the PS2.

Anyone who disses the PSP deserves to burn in an athiest version of hell along with ipod and nokia owners.

I think the laser isn't the issue, i'm oretty sure Sony thought about that. If they can make a "minidisk player" use a laser only skip when you litterally DROP the thing(doesn't happen skip all the time either)...If they incorperated that technology i think the lasers' fine...

IT's the screen...and size....And nerdability..

The screen is amazing, just games can be quite poor...

Watch the matrix however, you will understand both the PSPs power and prowess...

And as for nerdability do you say that about game consoles, computers, mobiles, cars, tvs ,and anything roughly technological?

What don't you like about the screen, size and nerdability? By the way, how many hours have you logged in on one?

Flame-returns,

What are some "must have" titles out there for the PSP in your experience? Sounds like Matrix is one...any others? Thanks

Also, can the browsing be useful or is it just more of a novelty? I've seen some examples of people that have portals setup for the PSP, but really....I wonder if it will become something of use.

Of the few currently available in the UK (we have the games not the console) I would say Wipeout, Ridge Racers (its fun while we wait for GT4), and Metal Gear Ac!d, Lumines is fun and distracting in short bursts aswell.

MGA is the greatest of these games simply due to its inventiveness, its like an FPS card game hybrid.

I am told Tony Hawks (sp?) is good but I personally avoid skateboarding games.

Edit: There is a Matrix??? This I have to have.

Flame,

My bad, I thought you were talking about the game, not the movie. My misunderstanding. :)

From looking, doesn't look like Matrix is out in a game format just yet.

hey, flame-returnsor pako, would you know if playin wipeout online makes you update your psp, because that'd mean no more emus for me, which is bad because i only rented wipeout and have no games besides the emus.

You have to manually download and launch the firmware updater. Haven't seen anything "automatic" yet.

Very poroud owner of a PSP for 2 weeks now. I have 3 games Lumi's Wipeout and RR. Its Emu heaven for the old school gamers like me.

How can anyone knock the scrren:).

One more feature no one thought of:
It can transfer files just like USB drives.

And that's why I can have work buy me a 1gb Duo card for my PSP. I have to be able to provide utility files when I'm working on computers at work..... :)

Well, my wife got me one today for our anniversary. What a lovely lady. Got her hooked on Lumies already. LOL She was wondering if she gets one for her anniversary.... Perhaps when the GT4 edition comes out, I could hand my down to her. ;)

It is a multiple 2d puzzle game that can get so frustrating that on more than 1 occasion I have been tempted to smash my PSP against household furniture.

Storage Limitations (so far 1gb sticks are the biggest, but I'm sure they're SanDisk is working on a larger solution.

What does make me a little nervous is the fact it's a little laser in there. Is there going to be calibration issues because it's going to get a lot more abuse than a console that sits on the floor or in a cabinet.

San disk is already working on a 3gb stick, but it's going to sell between $250 and $350 USD :scared:. I was worried more about the durability of the screen. So I coughed up an extra $40 for a two year warranty :sly:.

Wow... That's a lot of dough. I just picked up the 1gb last week. Seems as though work thinks it makes for good portable storage. "Yeah, that's right. Portable backups. That's what the PSP is all about.". As a result of Luminis, I now have to get my wife a PSP for her B-Day just so she will leave mine alone. :D

The PSP is a very nice machine. The lack of an OS makes it very flexible but at the same times gives it some limitations. To me, it's like a streamlined PDA of sorts. It has a GUI instead of an OS, it can play music and movies as well as display games, and of course it can play actual games right out of the box. It can do a HECK of a lot more with "hacks" or "mods" or whatever you want to call them. Of course, it's best when you own a wi-fi router or summat. I don't, but my neighbor does, but I wouldn't recommend doing what I do. ;) lol

I think that in order to see clearly, all sides must be viewed. If you look at a DS vs. a PSP or whatever, you can look at the specs and bash all day long on one or the other. I think you should just take each for what it is.

PSP owner for a month or so now and very proud despite pouring several paychecks into it. I also have a dial-up connection so the 512mb SanDisk memory stick will prove VERY useful once school starts up. you know...game mods, er--!! I mean...important papers...Senior project stuff... lol

lol loving that!

"Is that a game you're playing?"

"Um, no."

"I can see cars and stuff."

"Oh that. That's the backup program."

"Oh right. Carry on." runs to office and orders psp

Had any luck with the internet browsing Pako?

Not yet, well haven't had the time to try just yet. I just got a laptop from work with WiFi so internet browsing on the PSP has taken a more than usual back seat to my priorities at the moment.

I really, really want a PSP but right now there are some things on my mind...

Cost
Actual usability
Lack of a killer app for me
Cost

It costs SO FRIGGIN MUCH! 250 bucks is a ton of money. It's a sweet system, yeah, but it's nearing the cost of an Xbox 360 and that won't require as many accessories right out of the box. The only game I can see myself playing on it is GTA or GT4, neither of which have been released.

Can you really play mpeg's off the memory cards? That means I can play all my Tubi sound clip videos to spread the gospel of Italian engines to the general public :sly:

EDIT oooh look what I found on IGN...

Apparently the latest firmware update includes an official browser...

Pako, your 13 year old son, does he ever go on GTP? And does he like GT4 at all?

Sorry for the off-topicness.

btw, I hope you don't spoil your daughter that much ;).

I dont think the system is for you then. If you cant find a valid reason to pay $200-250 then dont buy it. I got mine used for $200 plus spiderman 2 umd and a 1 year all damage warranty for $20. Well wortyh the money for me.
