My Driving Sim Thread.
UBER UPDATE!
Ok, I've been using my cockpit for quite a while now, and it's really helped my driving in GT4. It's got me my best finishes in the WRS since I joined and it's increased the amount of fun I have playing GT4 by tenfold. So I thought i'd treat it to a facelift and make it looks like a proper driving simulator. Below are progress pictures showing the transforming of my cockpit from the rickety rackety makeshift one you saw a month or so ago, right up to the black beauty im using now! Please let me know what you think of it.

vtec

Original setup:
This is how my cockpit started off, with some minor modifications such as the drilled holes for cable ties, and a flip down shelf for WRS notes, TV Remote etc.

Painting the cockpit:
I bought some matt black paint from a local DIY store to paint the wooden pedal rest that I built and the table for my wheel which I took apart for the painting.
Once the paint dried, I reassembled everything and put it all back in my room. Before I knew it I had ordered the BARC scrutineering decals and a white number 88 decal from Demon Tweeks. It was starting to look much better now. All I had to do was wait for the decals to arrive and go to the 99p store to pick up some black cable ties.

Decals arrived and applied!!
The BARC decals and car number arrived in the post this morning! I've just finished applying them to the cockpit and taking pictures. It's awesome! I keep getting distracted by it when i'm driving now because I like it so much! I went and bought the cable ties from the 99p Store yesterday and also picked up a cheap rubber car mat which I cut down to size and fitted to my pedal box to give it a more realistic look and to stop the pedals from moving around.
Here's a before and after pic to show just how much my cockpit has changed since the very start. I know I look like a homeless person in the first pic, I guess it all adds to the contrast of things getting better lol.

Please let me know what you think. I love it!

If you're interested in purchasing a wheel like mine check out the link below:

doesn't look bad at all besides the fact that if you lean backwards it looks like your chair is gonna break in half:D

I was thinking of putting some wooden supports from the main slats at the bottom going up to the back of the chair to make it bend a little less. It hardly bends at all at the moment, it bends just as much as it did with its metal legs attached.

Looks nice 👍. The only thing that I dont like that the TV is too far away from what I can see in the picture ;)

yea, I didnt want to move too much stuff around, although I did have to raise a shelf and put in new mounts so the tv would fit in that shelf. It's so fun, but with games like GT4 it doesnt provide the most realistic seating position but it's very comfy and everything is just where I need it to be.

shame you didnt put "WRS" on the side of the thing, instead of having a pointer to the rally series on the side.

never mind.

other than that, you have no excuses now, you should be in division 1 by the end of the month.

lol.
I couldnt write WRS even though I wanted to. The sticker sheet originally said "HALL 2, COMMERCIAL VEHICLE SHOW" and the "S" was missing. I wanted to write GTP on the side but oviously there were no letters for that.

oh and vexd, I should be in Div 1 by the end of the month if I spent every day up til then practicing lol.
I reckon now I have a comfortable seat, my driving should improve a lot. Keep an eye out for me lol.

I've ridden my setup of the wrc thing now so it's ready for the paint, now I just need the money for the paint itself. It should look phat when it's done.

...Still not in Div 1...

i have to get some pics of my temporary set up! since I am waiting for my Bride seat rail for my buddy club seat to put in my EG I use that to sit in! It is comfortable for over 2 hrs straight it is awesome.

I post an actual pic but this will give you an idea :)

pretty cool. You can post pictures of your cockpit in the Cheap cockpit alternative thread or start your own photo thread. I just started this thread so I could post my own pics and update them regularly.

...Im not trying to sound angry if I seem to be coming off that way.

Very nice Vtec_guy, Its a perfect example of what you can make with what you have to work with. Simple and functional. Have you thought of putting your tv on the steering wheel stand? or is that to close?

I dont think it would fit, although it would be pretty cool. My setup cost me nothing to build (excluding the wheel). Because I built the pedal stand and seat chassis from wood up in my shed and the wheel table used to be my bedside table. And I stole the school chair from a tennis court. God damn im a badass lol.

I just updated the thread with some info on my wheel. Just to sway some of you people that have your eye on a DFP lol ;D.

Being a DFP afficionado I feel the need to scoff at your wheel but it looks kinda cool.

The big quesiton is, how far does it rotate?

same here... no other wheel can top the (now adjustable) rotation of the DFP.

I have the Logitech one. Pretty good :) Look at my thread for the pics of it ;)

Nice cockpit. Nice steering wheel, never saw one like that! :dopey:

I would like to take some photos of my "cockpit". Well it's more like a leather reclining chair and a TV tray with bent-out legs for stability and a 6L water tank on top to weigh it down, but it does the job and the angles and distances are all correct :)

I've just added a demonsttration video. If any of you saw my old one then you'll be pleased to know this one has the wheel view as well as footcam n stuff. the lighting is a bit naff but oh well...

It looks like a very good racing cockpit there...

I read it has as good FFB as the DFP, I have the Driving Force (not the Pro) and it is really good to... the williams wheel though looks very good too :D

I just wanna burst bubbles.....

Yo vtec, you know i am just jealous, but in my opinion, you arent enjoying the full flavour of GT4 and never will be, if you arent using 900 degrees of sheer steer.

For example, getting round the last two corners of costa di amalfi just isnt a hardship for you.

I wouldnt ever post a video of me, hell pix are bad enuff, but i would post a pic of my setup in your thread.
:trouble:👍

nice setup,

I dont think 900 degree steering is all I need to enjoy GT4. I love my wheel, it's reasonably cheap and delivers the goods. I'm very happy with my wheel for now and im sure ill be enjoying it just as much in a years time.
And a DFP wont work with my cockpit because the table clamps dont have angle adjusters so the wheel would be at like 35 degrees fro mthe table when i need it to point straight at me. When I get my own place i'll probably....no make that certainly, ill certainly build a new cockpit that will be able to house a DFP so I can get the "900 degrees of sheer steer".
