My Crippling Fear

I'm laying here in bed, up north, and there are smoke alarms in each room, and I can't sleep because I am afraid it will go off any second. I don't know where this fear originated, but right now I doubt that matters. I'm really tired so what can I do to get over my fear of fire alarms?

Have you set them off? Have you seen just why they are there and how they work?

Yes one time about two years ago they just went off for no reason. No fire, no candles, nothing that could make smoke. And my god they make the worst sound ever. I know they are here keep me safe but they scare me terribly

That is very irrational. Have you confronted your fear? Hold down the test button until the thing drives you insane, then, relax and know they are only there for your protection.

Mine went off in summer due to humidity.(My floors were wet from it.) But I normally only set them off with my bad cooking.

My thinking is that if you set them off a couple of times then you might not be afraid. Don't do it at night though.

Well it is almost quarter to 1 in the morning here and there are other people sleeping in the house. They will drive me... Insane and out of the house but I guess ill try it tomorrow.

So something that has been in your house for years has all of a sudden made you incapable of sleeping?

Our weekend home. And it usually does but now I'm tired of it so I decided to see help here because at the moment it's my only option.

So you're afraid of the noise it'd make? Are you afraid of alarm clocks too?

Or are you afraid of the idea that a mechanical device can make a decision on it's own? Choosing to go off when there is no reason for it to go off?

This is nonsense and you need to be afraid of an awful lot of stuff if you say yes to either.

They usually beep. One beep, then they laugh at you as you wander around the house trying to figure out which one of the damn things just beeped only to give up and walk away seconds before it beeps again.
Fixed. :ouch:

Turn it off, and tell someone else to turn it back on when you aren't around, so that you don't know for sure when it gets turned back on.

Or just turn it off altogether, surely there are others (detectors) in the house?

Smoke alarms go off when the amount of alpha particles it detects reduces so my tip build a nuclear reactor. Or change the battery as that can effect it too. Or see a psychiatrist.

Just take them all down and throw them out, you don't need smoke alarms anyways. All they do is tell you when you're girlfriend is burning supper.

Thats a very important thing to know I cant have burnt supper.

How can you be afraid of smoke alarms, when there are so many things actually worthy of your fear?

Like the guy hiding in the closet, or are the windows actually locked? Was that really lightning and thunder, or the first shot of an alien invasion? Does that guy who kept stealing your lunch money in the third grade know where you live now?

 Although if you're lucky that won't ever happen anyway. Or you could just not have a girlfriend, so it makes them completely pointless 💡

Thats true, its hard to set off a smoke alarm with the microwave and/or take out.

But seriously, I had the exact same fear 7 years ago on Holiday. The general shape of the Alarm creeped me out, I remember being afraid it would swoop down and eat me. I was 6 at the time. When it did eventually go off due to a piece of unlucky toast being burnt, I pretty much ran for my life.

Even now, I'm still afraid, it is why we don't have one.

Ya we had a house built in the past 5 or so years and it is illegal now to build a house without one so, we had no choice.

I can understand phobias.

But your phobia does not even have a name(well not one that i know of).

Thankyou, because most phobia's are irrational, so people must understand them even though there is no reason, I think.

And I've checked it has no name. So world, I'm going to name it here on GTP: Alarmonoxophobia
