well as the title says my dog, which became mysteriously ill on Boxing Day was put to sleep today. since boxing day she was constantly being sick and not eating, after a few days of this i took her to the vets. the vet kept her in for a week and ran several blood tests. the finding. a small liver liver infection, she was then put on antibiotics and a drip to help her liver recover and i took her home. last night though she was violently ill and i rang the emergency vet, after a body scan revealed nothing they decided to operate and have a look. the finding wasnt good, it was a large tumer in her liver and there was nothing they could do. at the recommendation of the vet i layed her to sleep earlier today. its strange, she was my best friend for a long time i've had her since she was a puppy, longer than i've known my wife. after saying my good byes the vet injected her and she closed her eyes for the last time and went to sleep.
sorry to ramble on but i just had to talk about it to someone, my wife pours her heart out everytime i mention her so it wasn't really much comfort.
well cheers anyway for reading.
:(

Deepest sympathy. I've had to do that to several pets, and it's never easy, even in cases where it is clearly necessary. The pain and loss will fade, but the memory will not.

My regards and best wishes BMW power. . . I had a Golden Retreiver once back in high school. The Golden suffered from Grand Mal Cesures, So At the Age of 17 I had to decide whether or not to put him to sleep. It was the toughest decision I had to make in my life up until that point. I severly miss the dog to this day, but I know now that it was the right thing to do, because to let a dog suffer so much pain which it can't understand why it is suffering, it basically took the pain away. I remember the night beforehand He had the worst attack of the cesures and then after it he attacked me. . . he knew something was wrong. . . He is someplace better now and in no pain and I can smile about that at least. :(

Im Sorry to hear about that BMW. Never fun when you have to let somthing you love go.

Im afraid this is goin to happen to my dog soon too, I've had my little apple head chiuhahua since i was around 5 or 6, now that he is over 10 years old he has had cesiers(sp?) and been acting wierd, good news is that he is still active and runs around and plays alot.

It is always sad to hear of/experience somthing like this happening and I am sorry.

I had to do that to my dog almost a year ago this march. He was an Austrian Sheepdog mix of some sort, found him when he was 3-4 lost one day when it was pouring outside. Brought him home and he was a very well behaved and smart dog. The past few years of his life he was having trouble getting around the house so we decided to put him down, I will always remember him.

Sorry to hear that. :( One of my dogs is almost 100% blind in her right eye and we think that she is losing the sight in her left eye and she is only 4 years old. :( Hopefully her condition won't worsen.

I know how you feel to an extent BMW Power. Last summer, right before school started, some punks that live near me were shooting off fireworks for no reason at all with no adult supervision. My pal AJ (a black british lab) ran over there barking and was hit with a firecracker and died on the way to the vet. I miss him a lot but I'll never forget about him. Even my chocalate lab Darby was droopy for a couple months. Sorry to hear about your dog, it's always sad to hear about such an event.:(

Sorry to hear that BMW my condolances to you

My sister had a cat once that was savaged by a dog, I drove like a bat out of hell to try and get it to a vet that was open but to no avail

Losing a pet sucks, big time

thanks everyone, makes me feel a lot better talking about it. my condoleances to everyone else who has lost a loved pet. oh yeh by the way her name was Cleo, a staffordshire bull terrier.

Damn, thats gotta suck. My dog recently had a bacteria overload in her stomach and it looked like a tumer. She got surgery about a month or 2 and she is 10 years old and now acts like a little puppy.

Huh thats too bad. She looks very much like my friends dog which was also just put to sleep after swallowing a piece of carpet and at only 1.5 years old. my friend never got over it, and its boring hanging out at his house without a puppy there so i guess i sorta know how you feel.

I can't bear thinking about the time when my dog is no longer with me. He is 100% Beagle and about three years old. I hope I die before he does.:(

i had a rabbit like 4 years ago that i had for like 5 years. loved the thing played with it everyday. i remember it died when i was at my sister's for a month( i was supposed to come back after 2 weeks :( ) i remember telling it that i would be back in 2 weeks and sure enough, after 2 weeks (15 days i think) my parents called and said my rabbit died. coincidence???

its always very hard to do something like that, even more so if you really love the dog. my girl's dog died recently, too. it has been really hard for us (more for her, obviousy) to get over that loss. I wish it wont be as hard for you. :(

You have my sympathy.:( I once had a cocker spanial. She was 14 years old, mostly blind. One day she had ran away and we found her the next day across the highway from my house in the ditch walking in circles, it had just rained so she had lost her scent too. We took her home and decided she had to be supervised at all times or make sure she was behind closed doors. One day my brother came home from work for lunch and he left the door open because he couldn't see her. Well we looked for a week and couldn't find her. I figured she had found a place and lay down but there was no sign of her. At least I knew she had rested peacefully. The weird thing was we were going to put her to sleep in a couple of days after she ran away the second time. But now I have my black lab and I just love her and I'm not letting go. I think that is perhaps one of the best ways to overcome the death of a pet is get a new pet and have fun. But there is still those times you just remember all the good times you had and how much they mean to you. Good night everyone.

Yeah.. I'm not really looking forward to the day that i have to put my dog to sleep, ior when she dies.... It's going to suck. My condolences, BMW.

I hope you killed those bastards with the fireworks..

Anyway, it always sucks to lose a pet, I've lost 3 in my short life.

I'm pretty much over all of them now (the last was about 5 years ago) and we've moved on to new animals. I don't know how I'll feel when I loose one of them, I just hope it isn't soon - they're all so young.

I want another dog though..

Its always hard losing a pet. My parents always have dogs (I have a Jack Russell at the moment and have become really attached.) At least you know that it was put down for a reason, and that it no longer suffers. As much as you want it to be alive, no one likes to see there pets suffering.

thanks everyone, its really helped talking about it. my wife seems better to now the shock of it has set in and we realised we done the right thing and she didn't suffer. total cost of vets bills: £2,700
but i would of paid twice as much as that to keep her :(
thanks everyone again, you've all helped loads :)
