I just got a triplicate e-mail thismorning from my main hosting site. former forum memebers at the boards exploited a loophole in the senile forum format, and basically defaced and destroyed the whole site AND the very expensive server. all the archives for a site that's been online about a decade, and was never the previous target of any kind of attacks.

be lucky you never have to put up with this, gentlemen. 'cause I may have just lost my main reason to be online. at least THIS place resonds in a timely manner, but there's a LOT more mature people here.

That sounds sucky mate. Any way of identifying these n00bs? If you're in the same country maybe it's something the police can help with?

the idiots were from a "spin-off site" of people evicted from our forums for policy violations. like creating multiple user accounts. (that's an insta-ban), or opening up cans of worms. politics and religion are banned from the forum, and any flaming also generates a ban. even a PG mispost, or use of abbrevreations like wt (you know the rest) gets a warning. an adult section was created specifically for that.

they were destroyed twice in a row. even the site admins had approved, and private information, including user passwords and private messages, were publicly posted.

the site owner of the offender instantly killed the whole site, but all archives were destroyed and the server's hard drive was wiped clean.

ladies and gentlemen, this was done for crap and giggles!!!

anybody care to agree with me that every member of said website, their ISP's, Universities (that taught them such skills), etc should have the drawrs/nickers sued off of them for destruction of private property, etc?

I agree, here here. Except the universities part. Can't blame a martial art instructor for teaching an unknown pscho how to hurt people with bare hands.

Yeah, that does really suck. I agree that their universities are not liable, since the offenders were likely violating their own Terms Of Service as well. That does not mean that you shouldn't contact their schools and recommend disciplinary action against them for those violations.

Good luck getting things back together as best you can.

well, no suits are possible now.

the offending site has been sold back to "domains by Proxy"

*pokes thread back awake*
okay, my host is back online. the perp turns out to be ONE person who did all the hacking.

a note to admin: this was the equivelant of one hacked off Forza fan destroying the whole of GT planet because some n00b said he didn't like Forza's breakage.

our vulnerability point turned out to be "ikonboard" based forums. i think the format is senile, isn't it?
