I own an iPhone for quite some time now, and I think it's a very good platform to develop applications and games (and apparently, I'm not the only one). So I acquired a MacBook Pro and some books and started development on a little (well, actually it's not so little :P) game I have in mind.

Just curious, are there any fellow iPhone/Objective-C developers here on GTP? If so, what are you guys working on?

Being totally pampered by Java and its automatic garbage collection, I was put off at first having to do everything myself in Objective-C, but it has really grown on me and I have started to like it. :)

Okay, so no iPhone developers here I guess! :P

A little update on my project: it's all coming along quite nicely, but it still needs *a lot* of work.

Anyway, here are a few screenshots to wet the appetite!

The first one is the soldier stats screen where you can view the stats and equipment of your soldiers.

And another one, showing the weapon stats screen (accessed by tapping one of the weapon buttons in the loadout screen). You can also load/unload the weapon here or go to the ammo stats screen.

Feedback is, as always, appreciated. :)

That's damn cool.

Out of interest, what's your background related to programming?

We struck a deal with one of (maybe both of them) our new publishers to release on the iPhone next year. I really do need to get myself one.

I've been in software development professionally since 1998 (for hobby since 1986 or so). I can program/have programmed in Pascal, Cobol, SmallTalk, several flavors of BASIC, several flavors of assembly, Java, C, C++ and now Objective-C (and probably some other stuff I forgot ;)). My current regular job is Java Enterprise architect. Besides that I have started work for a small startup of an acquaintance of mine as an advisor for the whole IT strategy.

It's been a while since I posted here, but here's a quick screenie of the main game screen. Some of the buttons need work. ;)

Would this be playable on the Touch and would you like a beta tester? :dopey:

Yes, it will be playable on the Touch, and yes, I will require beta testers at some point. Still a long way to go for a decent beta though. ;)

Turn based? I always found that a bit clunky on PC - however... on an iPhone - this would suit it much more...

C.
Yes, it's turn based. I will be working on a realtime project after this one. :)

I'd be interested in beta testing as well when the time comes. Also, your screen of the M16 is technically an M4 carbine, isn't it?

Would love to beta test for you. I have the three generations of iPod Touch, so I have a great testing platform.

I'll let know in this thread when I'm ready for beta testing (which will probably not be anytime sooner than a month or two/three :P). And yes, it ís a M4/Colt Commando (which is largely based on the M16A2 if I'm not mistaken). :)

Looks good, I'm currently working with a handheld/mobile developer, so let me know and I could forward on their contacts to you.

The end of the school term I have to create/develop an iPhone App; I have abs. No clue what Im going to do yet...

He showed the M16A2. (Which is effectively an M4; I think the M4 has a shorter barrel length, though.)

Very nice!
Thanks. :)
The series had went downhill by then. Laser Squad ruled though.
Laser Squad was very cool indeed. I did play a lot of Ufo: Enemy Unknown though. After that it went downhill pretty quickly.

Thanks for the offer, I'll keep it in mind. 👍

Start with something small. ;) Maybe create a GTP news app? You'll have to check with the owner (Jordan) if it's allowed though.

I looked it up on Wiki and it said they were largely the same, so I just picked M16. ;)

On the development front: I'm developing the AI at the moment, but I think I can create a little gameplay movie to show how the animations work and show some of the sounds. I'll try to post it later this week.

That looks very cool Lars... Let me know when you are going to release... I'll be ordering this game from the Apps store for sure ;)

The Lite version will be free of charge, so you can give it a go without paying anything. :)

Thats fine too... D/L the Lite version first and then go for the full version 👍 Can't wait, good luck with the whole dev. process :D

Can you send me an iPhone (free of charge) to try it on? :dopey:
That's a benefit for employees of my company only. :sly: And I'm not hiring. :P (yet, anyway)

BTW, the game will work on the iPod Touch as well; I'm not using iPhone specific API's, so if you have one of those, you can run it too.

A short demonstration video of the inventory screen and the tactical view. Movies recorded from the iPhone simulator. View in HD for best quality.

(yes, my youtube skills suck, the game actually looks really nice ;))

Who is doing the art for this?
I buy most of the 3D models and props, then create scenes, customize and animate them myself (using Poser 8). I did all the buttons/icons/etc. myself (with Poser, Adobe Fireworks and Photoshop). I create the maps using textures and models I bought (again, using a combo of Poser, Fireworks and Photoshop).
