My little predicament

Two thighs have been troubling me recently,

1. Ive being playing music and practicing with my band a lot more than usual, and im happy, im getting confident playing in front of people, were going somewhere but i have the Junior Cert Coming up (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Junior_Cert)
I should be studying for it but i dont care about it because i might have to go to college to be what i want to be. I want to be a director or a photographer later in life, and nothing in the school im in cater for it. And to me, everything apart from Maths, English, Geography and History are irrelevant to what i want ot do or even life in general.
The junior cert is if the student wants to leave schol early and take an apprentice-ship (Sorry, my spelling is atrocious!) and the leaving cert is if you want to go to college.
And if i do a post leaving cert course (which would help) i get 200 extra points to get in college and a lot of preperation for college.

So what ive been thinking is, Focus on the Above subjects and lay back on the others till the Leaving cert so i can see if The band works out any way good and so i can still sort things out.

But...heres the snag. I got an offer to get a free flight and tickets to Download 2008 with a friend and his mam, and my mam might let me because she trusts my friends mam and my friend. But its on in the week that The tests are. Well, the weekend anyways. So i think its on Friday the 13th, so we would leave friday morning and be back monday so ill miss 2 tests.
So, its kind of a case of if i ditch my possible plan, study like hell and hope there not important tests on those days, cut some deals with my parents (work with my dad, Dont go out for a while etc.) and possibly go to download.
Or stick with the plan, dont go, miss what ive being trying to go to for 3 years running and get the band going better.

Is any of this a good idea at all? And which should i choose if any?

Honestly, music rarely gets people anywhere in life. If I were you I would sacrafice a good weekend for school. I know it sucks but that junior cert thing seems pretty important.

True, but i wouldnt be concentrating on music or be aspiring to "make it" in music, i mean, there are a few fenues around here you can get paid a good bit of money to play but you have to be good. should i keep goin for that?

Do the Cert, there are always other opertunities and making sure you go to collage will open allot more doors than a weekend of music and fun. Plus once you get a decent job as a photographer you may well be photographing bands and stuff anyway so im sure doing well in school will pay off in the end.

Its hard to say, you should choose something that you love, if you are really pationate about music and your band is pretty good and that is what you want to do then do that. If you want to be a photography or director, you may want to lean towards doing these tests so that you can hopefully become either in the future. I would say sacraficing one fun weekend at Download is worth having a great career that you love.

BTW who is playing at Download 2008? Lamb of God by any chance?

no Lamb of god, But Theres a srong rumor that there will be AC/Dc, KISS, BlackStoneCherry and Slipknot...My 4 Favourite bands :(
Well, i will be doing the leaving cert, so to me i think the Junior Cert Is a bit...Redundant y'know.

And while im here, what kind of things would i be looking to keep on/focus on to have a career in Directing/Photography?

yeah, i will have to admit that was great!
Well, music means more to me than anything else, and il do anything to be around some of my favourite preformers.
but yeah, i guess your right, i should be more greatful that i get the chance to sit them in the first place.
but then again, the JC is just there as a Saftey net for those who drop out before the LC

Aims?

Save up, get a decent camera, get a portfolio going now. Photography style courses will look at your portfolio work first and your academic achievements second. That is by no means to say academics can be left behind but it's vital you can show you have the ability to produce some good work.

Well make sure it's all quality stuff and well organised.

I have several mates from my Design and Technology class who have got into "creative" style courses purely on portfolio work. One for a BSci in 3d Animation the other a BA in Automotive design (Where the course director is apparantley a former chief designer from Pininfarina).

I agree. My brother has been playing in a punk band called Bombing Neverland for a few years now, and before that he was in various bands for about 10 years. This band he's with now has actually released an album which sold in stores, but I can tell you as an outsider looking in that if you haven't made it before you're 25 you're dead in the water, and to make it is nearly impossible, since everyone and their brother is in a band.

Just tellin' it like I see it. Get an education and a career. Play music in your basement with friends and drink Buds on Sundays.

can you re-take the test at a later date? if you can't i personally would take the tests because if they count for 50% of your grade like me you couldn't afford to miss any.

Making a career from your education can get you lots of weekends at Download, so I'd say take the tests. And that's from someone who has been to the last 2 Downloads.
