My Mouse (Problems)

Could any of you shed light on this subject for me?

My mouse has been freezing at random times and stays frozen in one spot until I restart my PC.

Could this be a virus?

Could it be that I need a new mouse?

I'm using an OE ball mouse for my dell 4300S (bought in 2001 brand new).

I've checked the mouse repeatedly and there is nothing inside it on the bars that the ball makes contact with.

Also, there is nothing wrong with the cord (as far as I can tell), and unplugging the mouse and plugging it back in does nothing.

So, should I get a new mouse?
Would that fix the problem?

Once the mouse icon on the screen freezes it stays like that until I turn off the PC... This worries me.

I am concerned that a virus could be in my system but I've never heard of a virus attacking the mouse (but that doesn't mean there isn't something like that out there).

Any advice you all can give me is greatly appreciated.

I would suggest a new mouse anyways. Optical > Ball any day. I use a Logitech G5 (Could have had G7, which is a G5 cordless, but don't want cordless). It is the top of the line gaming/professional graphics design mouse. You can adjust the DPI on the fly and everything. Very accurate and works on ANY surface (even works on my laminated synthetic desk wood). It's about $50 though. So if you don't want a hugely expensive top-o-the-line mouse, go for Logitech anyways. Logitech makes the best quality optical mice.

Im not saying it couldn't be a virus (would be more-so spyware than a virus), but I'd still suggest going optical just to be somewhat up-to-date and have better performance.
 
Yeah optical or laser mice are much better. Although I'm having problems with my wireless logitec because the battery compartment is too big and they slide out a bit, also making the mouse unresponsive.

I guess that doesn't directly address your problem, though. Nothing seems to point at it being a virus/spyware other then the fact that there is no other explanation.
