I Matty R I
I'm the proud owner of a 1997 C5 Corvette Automatic. I would have loved a standard but for the price I couldn't pass it up. I picked it up on 11-01-08. When I picked it up, it had 91,467 miles on the odometer. The previous owners were above age 40. It was babied. I've pushed it past 93,000 miles in that time. Let me just say that this car is amazing. It's been more than I have ever anticipated, and more than I can handle as a first car. I picked it from a guy in Kentucky who drove to Tennessee to meet up with me. To date I've had it up to 140mph and that was the day I picked it up. This car is in PERFECT condition. Not a scratch, not a tear in the leather, not a problem with the engine. It's as close to perfect condition for a 1997 C5 that you'll probably see. For the price I paid anyway. We'll just say that I paid WAY under $15k for it. I'll post up better pictures when I can that I've taken with my good camera. These photos are from the crappy camera from my iPhone. I'll add the mashed potatoes and signs soon. Until then, enjoy with me my first car at age 21. :)

Any questions I'll gladly answer! :D

Plus several points for a cool, American V8 sports car, but minus several million for auto. Ah, well. I wouldn't mind at all having one. Good job!

Hey Matt -- very cool. I'm also looking at C5 Corvettes, but I'm getting killed on insurance quotes. I have no accidents, and my last (and only) ticket was more than four years ago. What are you paying? And who with? Feel free to PM me if you want -- I'm very interested.

I've got as perfect of a driving record as you can have. No tickets. No wrecks. (Reported wrecks anyway.) And good credit.

A 21 year old insured driver with full coverage I'm looking at roughly $300 per month. At least until I'm with this company six months in which case my rates will drop a bit. I can't wait until I'm 25.

$300 a month? Damn... I pay like 1200 a year for both the Corolla and the Spyder. And I don't have a perfect record...

Still, nice car. Just find a controlled place to push it, I'd say.

I'm 23 and pay 280/month for an 06 Z and a 97 Escort. Just one ticket. It helps when you have another car as your daily. Without the Escort, I'd be paying 300+ for just the Z.

If my next car doesn't end up being a 370Z, I'll be looking into C5's. Though, Z06's hopefully.

Couldn't find a better location than Lowe's?

Nice 'Vette. I like those wheels on it. Try not to be too stupid in it...it sounds like you have been already.

To be fair, who wasn't stupid when they got their first car? Better to pull 120 in a Corvette than to do it in something like I did.

I know I didn't break 100mph for a while after getting my first car...and have only done it twice in the Si. 140mph on the day you buy a car is just asking for it.

I'm not saying it is smart. I'm just saying it is common. I know the first thing I did when I got my licence was get in my mom's car and see how fast it would go (125, by the way).

I've got more time to write about it now. So here goes.

She's in GREAT condition. The paint is flawless. It runs flawlessly. The interior is immaculate. All black. None of that nasty red lots of Corvettes have. It's got some run flat tires with 4,000 miles on them. Can't think of the brand right now. The only problem with the car is that the front tire pressure monitoring systems actuators are bad and it won't tell me the front wheels pressures. I can deal with that. The car is completely stock except for the exhaust pipes. They were originally black but the previous owner had chrome ones put on. No difference in the exhaust note. Nor will I ever make it loud. I'm not into all of that. I'd rather a person hear my engine than my exhaust.

I picked it up from a nice gentlemen who was in trouble with his bills. I got it for a steal of a price. I expected to spend somewhere around $15,000 for my first car. Didn't have to. I just had to wait a while and it all seemed to fall into place. So, I met with the gentlemen in northern Tennessee. Took it on a nice 30 minute test drive and couldn't find a thing wrong with it. I took a friend of mine who's a mechanic and he found nothing wrong either. I told the owner I'd take. Handed him cash and left him there with his wife and two kids. In their Kia Spectra. It must have been tough on the man seeing his black baby driving off, never to see it again.

Boy did I have a wonderful trip home. The first thing I did was take the top off. It was a beautiful sunny day and I was more excited than I've ever been. I'm driving a Corvette! I'd never even sat in one until the day I bought it. I got to drive through the Tennessee mountains hugging turns and getting thumbs up from motorists along the way. A few semi truck drivers gave me a horn blow and a smile. It was amazing. I never thought before getting the car about how many looks I'd get. It's a lot different than driving and sharing a Ford Explorer with my twin. It gave me a good chance to play with the touring mode, sport mode, and performance mode settings. All of which you can completely tell a difference. Touring mode is great for reducing the severity of bumps in the road. The wheel loosens up and it's just a relaxation mode. I hate it. The wheel is not as stiff and I don't feel the car like I'd like to. Sport mode tightens the wheel for a more intimate feel for the car. The bumps are harder for sure though. Performance mode makes the wheel extra stiff and you feel everything you're doing in this mode. It's hard to explain but I feel a difference in all settings.

Once back in town I had a really good time. I know the safer places to act a fool and so I did. I went out to an old road only used by truckers for the Budweiser plant. It's about a mile long straight line. I got to the stop sign to enter onto the road which was on my right. I punched off the traction control and flipped it to performance mode. Then I turned my wheel slightly right and gased it. Boy, did I not understand what I was getting into. Before I knew it, I had spun the car half way around and then some. I was now facing the direction I'd just come from. It was awesome. I was laughing hard with excitement. I tried it again the same way, but without so much gas. This time, I put the gas down maybe half way. I started with the entire back end of the car sliding as I started to take down the road. I had her spinning tires and sliding for a good 4-5 seconds before I let off because I was to scared to keep it going. Anyhow, I got her up to 140mph. She would have done more and it was easy to tell. Having never gone that fast it was hard to tell how fast this road was going to end. Never will I go that fast again. I just had to get it out of my system. And I did. Since then, I've pushed it to 105mph on the interstate. No more.

I'll post a few pictures from my phone. I'll post better ones when I can find my good cameras USB cable. Sorry for the crappy pics, better ones to come!

nice buy.

im not a fan of stupid behaviour with cars, especially on public roads. but im also guilty of speeding incidents.

long deserted straight, 1 am. 3 days after buying my car. common sense prevailed after a few minutes; i was travelling faster than my high beams were illumining.

You got a C5 under 15k? What is wrong with America?

OUCH!!!!!!!!

Here I was thinking you had found some secret! $300 a month isn't an insurance payment -- it's a freaking CAR payment!!! Don't be too stupid in it -- your provider will drop you at the first chance they get.

Thanks for the PM.

Gonna change the "M" to "C", too, heh?

Not anymore! I was considering a C5 Z06, believe it not... or I would if I didn't have to insure it!!! Of course, those insurance companies aren't stupid -- they're probably saving me from myself!

VERY nice C5. you should slam it, put a spoiler on it, change it to a mauve color and then it would be ready for that thred, "questionable modifications"

and then we would all shoot you.

None the less, VERY nice car, i hope you enjoy it for another 100K miles +. Its a Vette, itll last forever almost. just keep up on your oil changes and maintenance and your good to go, but thats common sense i really dont need to throw out there lol.

Wow congradulations on your Vette 👍, shows how much more of a bargain the US is compared to the UK... I paid probably what you paid and got a 1.2 litre Vauxhall Corsa! I do like it though but its crazy how much cooler cars you can get in the states for less... plus your petrol just halfed and ours has stayed roughly the same... :indiff:

Sweet car. 👍

I know what it feels like to want to go fast in your first car. The first week I had my car I raced a Chevy SSR and had it up to 120. I've only gotten it up past that once (130) and I don't plan on doing it again any time soon.

Aaah nice Vette, An LS engine as your first toy should be pretty damn awesome. Insurance, tough, is such a bitter pill to swallow...

Very nice! Too bad about the slushbox though... At least they're invincible! The C5 is a wonderful car, I've always liked the way they looked and felt. Well, you know what I mean. I'd love to find myself a Z06 2.0 of the same generation later on, but thats only because I'm insane.

Have fun with that piece of Kentucky pride!

I should look for a Viper then. :banghead:

Early models are under $30k. You want to talk about bad insurance though -- I doubt anyone under 25 would even get coverage. Same deal on the NSX. You might as well call your insurance company and ask them to pay for a new vehicle in two years, since you're going to total this one.
