Early models are under $30k. You want to talk about bad insurance though -- I doubt anyone under 25 would even get coverage. Same deal on the NSX. You might as well call your insurance company and ask them to pay for a new vehicle in two years, since you're going to total this one.
Which, like the '91-92 NSX models, are the ones you want to avoid. The lowest one available on DuPontRegistry is a '95 RT-10 not far from 46,400 miles.

Strangely enough, SRT-10 models from the 3rd generation are easily available for $40-$50K, which is under what several 2nd gen. GTS models are still running for.

Here's one Vip would probably love though.

^Why do I get the feeling it would be better to buy a more expensive used Viper than that one considering after I'm done fixing it will probably cost the same?

Yeah, and then there's the gas bit... I guess it's a good thing I'm 30 then. xD I'd so drive it like a granny to last a little beyond 2 yrs. :dopey:

It's more a dream I guess... not realistic. :indiff:

The SRT has depreciated a lot more like a normal car. Hype and styling are probably the culprits. They, too, will find a floor eventually.

I personally like the early RT/10 Vipers best. 92 and 93 models with their three-spoke wheels and impossibly stupid windows. I rarely see these anymore. The white & blue GTS will always be my favorite, though.

V1P3R
Yeah, and then there's the gas bit...

Depends. Use it as a second/weekend car and you're looking at springing for gas only when you want. How bad could it be? Run 50mi/wknd and you're looking at less than 3k annually... even at just 10mpg you're only looking at 300 gal... 300 gal @ $3 = $900 annually. Trust me there are MUCH worse costs associated with it!!!

Move here to Texas then. Tons of Viper love down here, and you'll only pay a little less than $40 to fill up the early RT-10s. :D

^ugh... Cold weather > Seeing tons of Vipers

Unfortunately...

Yeah... I don't consider the second gen a true Viper really.

Yeah, good luck finding one though...

It's actually a much simpler problem of things like Parking and security. I'm not in the ghetto, but leaving it out on the road around here will almost ensure vandalism... Then there is the money thing too... xD I don't think I'm the kind of guy to leave a Viper around for just the weekend too, I'd buy it to enjoy it since it is my dream car.

My uncle owns a first gen silver RT/10, that I think he got new. He said it actually went up in value.

Oh you bet ur ass it will go up, especially if it's got low mileage and in good condition... Lucky sob. :grumpy:

C'mon man, you serious? The coldest it gets here is 40-something degrees, at night. During the day, it's still easily 50-to-mid 60 degrees. Perfectly fine driving weather.

He's got about 300 on the odometer, and he keeps it in the garage, under a cloth. I actually got to drive it, though the Tremec is hard as hell.

I guess that means money in the future, eh?

You got a C5 under 15k? This is what is absolutely, utterly right with America.

Fixed that for ya.

Congrats on the C5, OP 👍 But be careful out there. I can't say I didn't indulge in some youthful shenanigans myself back in the day. But I'm frankly surprised I survived some of the stunts I've pulled. I highly recommend some high performance driver training like autocross or track day to go with that great car.

Year round? I'm thinking you didn't understand my reply. I hate hot weather.

Did I mention since picking up the car I'm averaging 18.3mpg? That's with stomping it around turns and giving it some gas down straight-a-ways. I do mostly city driving as well. On the highway it easily gets 25mpg+ cruising at 80mph. In the city it's constantly 15mpg and up. Gas in this is a lot better than I was getting in my Explorer. She was only averaging 11mpg. :ouch:

That's what I like about the LS engines, surprisingly great fuel economy! I know it's no comparison to your car but I too was incredibly surprised how great the mileage is in my 4.6l Interceptor when I got it!

Update.

I wrecked it first time out in the rain. It's totaled. $5-6k to repair, but the frame is shot and I was told that alone is $15k.

Thank God for insurance. Looks like I'll be making a few grand off of it, but I'd rather have the car. I had it one month and wrecked it. How awesome.

Ouch. Any pictures? I remember driving my car in the rain for the first time. Definitely tricky with my bald rear tires. It's even funner in the snow though.

My girlfriend and mother just left for Ohio today. They took my camera and my iPhone for it's GPS capabilities. I'll post them up soon enough. Wtf though. It's just not right.

I wasn't doing anything stupid. I hate how every person I've told assumes that I must have been speeding or doing something stupid. Just because it's a Corvette everyone assumes I was gettin' on it or something.

I was being stupid though. I was going around a corner and instead of looking at the road I was looking at my phone. I looked up and saw that I was heading towards a ditch. I cut the wheel to hard left and it started sliding back and forth. Slamed into the ditch head on after spinning into it. Looking at my phone and not the road was stupid. But I wasn't driving stupidly.

Well you did say in post number one you had already taken it up to 140 and just a couple post later you talked about sliding it around while on a back road. You can't help having people assume you were being a bit of a hoon when you wrecked. I'm not saying you were at the time of the wreck though, not being there I don't know what you were doing other then what you've told us.

Inexperience and lack of judgement will get you everytime, we've all had it happen to us. I don't know what your previous driving record was, but since this was your first car I have to imagine you didn't drive to much before the Vette. Plus A Vette is a lot of car to handle, especially in less than favourable conditions.

Just remember cars are replaceable and you live and learn from your mistakes. I don't think any of us can say we didn't do something stupid in our vehicle at one time or another. Glad to see you weren't gravely injured or killed though.

So what's your next car gonna be? 5.0 Stang?
A new record!

👍

Here are some shots of the car before it was wrecked and then after. Sorry for the bad shots of it wrecked, not much room in a garage.

I've opted to keep insurance out of this. For one, they'd total out the car. Two, my rates would go through the roof. Thirdly, I want to keep my clean driving record. I want the damn car, even if I would turn profit after their payout. It's my first car and it's my baby. I'm going to repair it out of pocket. I've already had the frame straightened out. That wasn't cheap. I'm still getting a second estimate done. I'll be able to salvage the hood thankfully. It's got only a few stress lines on it, nothing noticeable. What I've heard thus far is I'm looking at around $6k to repair.

I expected to spend somewhere around $15,000 for my first car.

Wait...you expected to spend $15,000 on your first car? Wow. Take a zero off and you have the price for mine...when i got it at least.

Congrats dude, especially if you busted tail to earn that money yourself. 👍 Nothing is more satisfying than enjoying the fruits of your labor.

EDIT: Just happened to see the update about the wreck. That's horrible, and is also why I BABY my car in the rain (and why I don't like..well...why I am very skeptical when people get fast cars as first cars). V8 + RWD = not rain friendly. Keep us updated.

Lemme help you out. Matt over there had some form of injury I believe which lead to a court case leading to him getting 15k. Don't take my word for it, but he has a thread explaining it. It's his thread about looking for a car.

Matt, it's a good thing you paid way under 15k for that! Repair money is nice:)
