Not sure how many care,... but I'm real proud of myself so I have to say this:

I havent smoked a cigarette in 6 days now,... and the urges are beginning to subside :D

I've never known a life without cigs. My mom smoked, I began stealing her's on the way to the bus by age 12,... I moved onto a pack a day at 16, and have been at 1.5-2 packs a day since 18.

Today,... I think I can safely say I'll never smoke another cigarette again in my life :)

Thanx for listening,... and BTW,... kids, dont smoke cigs, wanna know why?

KEY:

1. hair loss : smoking messes up your immune system so it doesn't work as well, leaving you open to a bunch of things, some of which cause hair loss, ulcerations in the mouth and rashes.

2. cataracts : if you smoke more than 20 cigarettes a day, youre twice as likely to get cataracts. the smoke irritates your eyes and the chemicals that get in your lungs go into your bloodstream and then up to your eyes.

3. wrinkling : smoking makes you look older alright, but not exactly the way you were hoping. itll make your skin dry and leathery. your skin will wrinkle faster than if you dont smoke.

4. hearing loss : smokers can start to lose their hearing earlier than people who don't smoke, and are more likely to lose their hearing because of loud noises or infections.

5. skin cancer : you don't actually get skin cancer from smoking, but because your immune system is weak you're more likely to die from it.

6. tooth decay : smoking changes the chemical balance in your mouth, making it easier for plaque to build up and yellowing your teeth.

7. lung ailments : you can get chronic bronchitis (build-up of puss and mucus, making you cough a lot, sounds really attractive too), emphysema (making the little air sac in your lungs swell and burst). and of course there's lung cancer too.

9. heart disease : smoking makes your heart beat faster and raises blood pressure. youve got an increased risk of clogged arteries too.

16. cancer : a)of the lungs - "male smokers are 22 times more likely to develop lung cancer than nonsmokers. b)of the tongue c) of the mouth, salivary glands and pharynx.

My grandmother now has cancer from smoking. She stopped 10-15 years ago, but it caught up to her. The cancer is almost all gone now, and doctors say she will be fine since they caught it this early.

Way to go for not smoking! Red Eye Racer

BTW, is that picture real?

How are you quitting? Cold-Turkey? To me, that's the only type I can see that actually makes sense...

Sorta,... I went to the Doc and got a prescription for Zyban.

It works like this:

The day you start taking it, you set a quit day 1-2 weeks from then. You keep smoking like normal until then. Mine was 10 days,.... set on last friday. One helpful thing is that on day 5 or so, the stuff starts kickin in and cigs start tastin like crap. So, by day 10, I was happy to stop, cause they were tastin worse and worse everyday.

The first day (friday) was pretty tough, even with the help of the Zyban. It made the urges for the nicoten go away, but it didnt help with the "routine",.... I was going insane at moments during the day that I usually smoked, like in the car or after a meal.

But, I toughed out those feelings, kept taking the pills, and yesterday was the first day I noticed that I was virtually free of any urges. I'll finish off this months prescription, and quit taking the pills, then it'll be official :)

But yeah,... as you said,.. cold turkey is the only way to do it,... even with the Zyban, they say that if you try and make it a "gradual process", it will eventually overtake the drug and it wont work.

I've tried to quit about 5 times until now,... everytime I go completely insane,... whether I did it cold turkey or slowing down,... I can definately say that the Zyban was a HUGE help.

Good luck racing

Congratulations! Quitting smoking is erhaps one of the toughest challenges for people.

Hopefully we'll see you a bit mroe around here, as I noticed that you kinda dropped out for a bit.

Hope all is well.

Good luck, and feel free to drop me a PM.

Yea, congratulations.
As my dad says (I'll probably get this wrong) "it's a fag at on end and a fool at the other". I mean would basically pay someone to take away a bit of your health and kill you a bit (which is kinda what smoking is).

Good Job! I wish I could get my mom to quit...I think it'll take a heart attack to get her to realize what she's doing to herself....

Same thing with my uncle :(

Hey, RER, massive congratulations to you. It's never too late to quit, and the earlier the better! I'm glad to hear that the cravings are subsiding already, at least to some extent.

Great job so far and good luck in the future.

As an ex smoker myself, I have to offer my congratulations. :D
Way to go. It'll get difficult from time to time, but in a little bit (like 6 months) food will even start to taste different.
Just remember don't replace the smokes with snacking. If you must have something to fullfill that "hand to mouth, puff, urge. Keep a bag of baby carrots around.
Good luck staying off the cigs.
Keep in mind that at an estimated $3.00+ a pack, and about 10-14 packs a week you'll save $1,500-2,000 a year, for other stuff.

Good show there RER, I just quit smoking myself about 3 weeks ago. Used to be a pack a day smoker too. I was seriously considering using Zyban, but I ended up just using the patch. Works well enough for me. Right now I'm in the second step of the patch with about 1 more week left to take it. After that, it's good by patch and cigarettes forever.
I really expected quiting smoking to be much harder than it has been for me. Certain times it is very difficult, like you mentioned when it was a habit. After a meal or getting in the car.

Are you feeling better already? I've already noticed that my sense of taste and smell have grown stronger again. I've also had alot more energy as well.
I'm really glad that I quit, and I'm really glad to hear that you're being succesful at it as well.

Congrats man.

Dang Boom,
I guess congrats are in order for you too.
Think of all the cool stuff you can put in the Lexus with all the ducats you're saving.👍

Wow, another round of congratulations are in order! Way to go, Boom! I'm really glad to see you guys giving up the cigs.

Dude ..pot smoke is worse then cigs because of the way you have to hold it in ..also it has some nicotene so it will mess up your cold turkey if you know what I mean.
Never could figure cigs out.

It's great to see so many people at GTP who've stopped smoking. :)👍 (And not in just this thread... we've had quite a number of other members stop too!)
