My router is missing!

All of a sudden, my Linksys WRT54GS Wireless-G BroadBand router has disappeared. My laptop, and desktop, have no wireless connection anymore. The wee network icon in the system tray, has a red X on it. Windows can't connect to a network as it can't be found. I can't access the router using the 192.168.1.1 address either. The wee lights on the front of the router are on as normal. I have tried resetting it, and powering it off for a few minutes, all to no avail.

I'm currently using my laptop connected directly to my cable modem, so its not my 'net connection.

I'm just going to try to connect to the router using the cable and see if I can access it that way.

Is there anything else I can try, or is my router dead?

Connected to the router using my network cable. Everything looked ok. Still no 'net connection though. Went back into it and reset it to factory defaults, but it still can't be picked up by my laptop or desktop.
 
Have you confirmed that the wireless signal is enabled and any encryption set the way it needs to be?

You may just have to replace it.

It seems to be set OK. I can't see anything obviously wrong.

I've got cables going through it now, and that's working, its just the wireless bit that's borked.

This is now officially driving me mad.

It decided to work again of its own accord. I went to put a WEP password on it as I didn't want it unsecured. It's now crashing my Vista'd laptop when I try to put that password in, but my XP'd desktop is working ok.

It has been fully off a few times this evening.
 
It really does sound as if it's borked...

If the router starts working again and you can get into the 192.168.1.1 address settings, try upgrading the firmware and see what happens... but it sounds as if it's a hardware issue and you need to replace it.

According to Linksys, there is no updated firmware for my router. The version that is on it is from 2004...

My laptop was right next to it.

My desktop, which is getting a connection fine just now, is upstairs.

It has been going on and off intermittently the last couple of days, but only for minutes at a time. Tonight it was off for a few hours.
 
It's a Linkless, they're renowned for this! That happened to my BEFW11S4 recently, "there-gone-there-gone-there-gone" every couple of minutes, and since it's out of warranty Linksys tech support won't offer you any insight on what the issue is unless you pay them for the call. Which seems pretty pointless, I mean paying someone to tell you that your Linksys wireless router is dead and that you need to buy a "new & improved" model!
More sensible to take that money & get your self a fancy Netgear model with lots of flashy blue LEDs! :D

The Linksys worked fine for 3 years, but once they decide to fail, they really fail.
I took mine apart and check connectivity with a digital ohmeter, etc, etc, used the reset button to set it to factory defaults, fiddled with the settings, all to no avail. Thought I was going mad, or my laptop was knackered for a while, but since we replaced it with the Netgear, it's been plain sailing. 👍
 
Stupid question time! Did you change the name of the SSID? I, for some ungodly unknown reason, left it as "Linksys" and the connection would randomly drop at least once every 24 hours. The problem was someone else had a router named "Linksys" as well and everything was getting a bit pissed at the crossed signals. Ever since I changed the SSID, it has worked beautifully.
 
Sounds like the ariel or the electronics inside are failing, If its on for ages it wouldn't be a surprise, may be worth shaking the thing!

It's working fine today.

My desktop has been OK from late last night all through today. My laptop didn't get a signal this morning, but I ran the setup utility from CD earlier, and it's been fine since.

It probably is on its way out, but I'll wait until it fails completely before I get a new one. I can always plug my laptop into the modem so I'm not going to be without internet when it does go.

Look at the lights on the front of it, to connect wireless, it should have a "Wlan" light or something similar and it should be on. (think you already know that, but just saying anyway)

If not, the wireless card inside your router is probably broken and it's not detecting the problem.
 
Just figured I'd mention that you may want to use WPA-PSK.

WEP is easily cracked (I've cracked a few in times of need when I'm playing with air/fuel maps in my buddies' cars and encounter questions/problems.)

WPA-PSK is easy to use and much harder to crack.
