If you can afford a 240 (Which you should be able to, they're not that expensive to aquire.) then by all means, go for it. By the way, how many of your troubles are covered under warranty? By the way, I think there are a couple "Million Mile" Volvo 240s. I don't think, unless horridly abused or neglected, that a 180,000 mile 240 will have too many problems, given that fact.
 
Old volvo's will keep running after earth has stopped rotating.. too bad that their engines are rather thirsty.
 
well it looks as if I'm not too late to save you, BY THE 124!!!$ 4900 is a reasonable price for a 95 and happens to be the exact price my best friend payed for the same car. (a 95 E320) Doug pretty much covered it though, there were a fair amount of changes both in 1990 (interior exterior) 1993 (new more powerful twin cam engine) and again in 1994 (final interior and exterior changes for the last two years of production) here are some tips for buying a 124 as one of your first cars

They are easy to work on and parts are actually pretty reasonable if you know where to look. autohausaz.com and the link in my sig are a good place to start, also buy the E-class owners bible from bentley publishers, worth every penny and has saved my *** a few times

the diesels actually have problems of their own, and often command a price premium on top of being hard to find, so it might be best to avoid them unless you have the diesel bug (heck I've got the bug and I still avoided them)

the V8s are excellent cars but you may find yourself overwhelmed quickly with insurance and cost to repair, but if you find a good one these are the ultimate 124s

the twin cam 104 engine (post 93) is more powerful and refined, but can have
more common and expensive problems than the more simple 103, if you have a low mileage newer car then this won't be as much of a problem.

I am just getting started owning my second 124, an '88 300E with over 150,000 miles on the clock and it still runs great, higher mileage means very little on these cars if they were treated reasonable before... don't hesitate to ask any questions and I'll answer if I can


Edit: these cars are excellent in the snow if you know how to drive and for $300 I got every single part needed for a tune up (plugs, wires, o2 sensor, cap and rotor) plus a fair amount of other stuff, just to give you an idea of parts pricing

I lied about the mileage of the car I bought, its at 122k, I got an even better deal than I thought!!!

but seriously, my girlfriends 78 240D was more reliable than my 87 most of the time

I've Decided to look for a 240. But first, the Saab's gotta go, and I think I've gotten my dad warmed over to the idea of getting rid of it again.
 
well one of your first posts was a link to a site that that you are pretty obviously advertising for... even if it wasn't spam, it could have been better worded

That kind of style costs money. Money I don't have. Besides, Isn't that an E500? While that car you posted is sex on wheels, The paint job and wheels are two things I'd rather not have to worry about now.

Wait.. What kind of wheels are those? That car is growing on me.
