I'm just about to start racing the Sim Mode races, and I have 0.0 miles for all cars in my garage, as well as 0.0 miles showing on my Sim Mode/Game Status screen. I've done some testing with my Viper at Super Speedway (SimMode/Beginner/SundayCup and Arcade/Easy) and here's what I found [NTSC Version].

Sim Mode (3 lap race)
Case 1: Enter one Sim Mode race, and exit the race immediately after crossing the finish line.
Result 1: Garage mileage for the Viper was 4.5 mi, Game Status mileage was 7.2 mi.

Case 2: Enter and qualify for one Sim Mode race (2 qualifying laps), and exit the race immediately after crossing the finish line.
Result 2: Garage mileage for the Viper was 4.4 mi, Game Status mileage was 7.1 mi.

Case 3: Enter one Sim Mode race, and let the car run "forever" after crossing the finish line (I lapped all other cars in this race).
Result 3: Garage mileage for the Viper was 5.3 mi, Game Status mileage was 8.4 mi.

Case 4: Enter and qualify for one Sim Mode race (2 qualifying laps), and let the car run "forever" after crossing the finish line (I didn't lap any cars in this race).
Result 4: Garage mileage for the Viper was 6.2 mi, Game Status mileage was 9.9 mi.

Arcade Mode (2 lap race) [NOTE: no qualifying for Arcade Mode/Single Races]
Case 5: Enter one Arcade Mode race, and exit the race immediately after crossing the finish line.
Result 5: Garage mileage for the Viper was 3.0 mi, Game Status mileage was 4.8 mi.

Case 6: Enter one Arcade Mode race, and let the car run "forever" after crossing the finish line.
Result 6: Garage mileage for the Viper was 3.7 mi, Game Status mileage was 5.9 mi.

CONCLUSIONS:
- Qualifying for races in Sim Mode races does not count toward garage nor game status mileage
- Using Sim Mode/Garage vehicles in Arcade Mode races will count toward: completion % (if not already raced); garage and game status mileage; trophies awarded
- Using Sim Mode/Garage vehicles in Arcade Mode races will NOT count toward: wins/races/win ratio
- Stopping a race immediately after crossing the finish line will save miles
- *** Game Status "mileage" is likely to be in km, not mi (1km = .6214mi)

Anyone out there get similar or different? I thought I'd be able to find something on this in this forum, but I couldn't. Forgive me if this has been mentioned before.

Anyway, This will greatly affect the way I do things, as I used to let all cars finish their final laps before I exited (to take record of their times and finishing positions). But if I want to conserve miles (i.e. engine wear), then I think I'll have to reconsider...

Have a great drive everyone!

Interesting findings but it won't affect the way I do things. Currently I am keeping an archive of brand new cars on another save that I can purchase if I need to get a fresh one.

amazing. i knew that qualifying does not affect your miles, but i hadn't noticed the discrepency between the garage miles and the game status "miles". It seems to be in kilometers just like you said. Funny mistake...but I wouldn't put it beyond GT3 to make that mistake. The torque is also way off on many cars, as if they moved the decimal one too many or one too few spaces. I'm surprised they managed to translate the words to english concidering all the other mistakes they made in translation. it doesn't take away from the game too much, but hopefully they will correct this stuff for GT4 to truly make it the "perfect" racing sim.

The Game Status km's is a bit wonky on my game.
I left for the Polyphony Cup with about 21,500km's total, and when i returned (800km's later) the total was about 21,601km's.............mesays: HUH?!?!?!

Ive done that as well I have 2 of almost every racecar, 1 that I have used and another with 0 miles untouched apart from removed the TCS and ASM in setup. So I can buy them on a save on my other mem card.

I had noticed that qualifying doesn't affect mileage, ahile doing some extended "testing" runs under the guise of qualifying. I exited numerous times after 30 minutes of tinkering, and fired up the game next time to see the car still with 0.0 miles on it.
