You can never know which car or type will be quick round the Nürburgring, it is very much experience and knowledge about the track which counts. . Some corners as Schwedenkreuss, need commitment to take in + 200 Km/h, brake or lift throttle and your gone... Brake at Fuchsrøhre + 220 -230 at the bottom and you will learn to fly... with angel wings ;-) At high speed you will feel crest and small humps which you will not feel at tourist speeds. Smalll roadhuging FWD car like a stripped down Suzuki Swift Sport with a experienced driver will even outperform a novice in a GT-R R35...

Don't know wether I can call myself a ringer, but I have been there twice. Have 22 laps under my belt :) It's one of my coolest experiences I've had. Rented a VW Scirrocco at Rent-Racecar. Highly recomendeble. It's a fast and nimble car.
Hopefully I'll be able to go again next year. :)

How do you guys get photos of you on the track?

There is a huge bunch of photograpers around the track like frozenspeed.com who post their photos on different websites. Just google nurbrgring photos. You can buy high quality oic from them. You can search theor archives on specific date and time on many of them.

no1pal: The Sciroccos from Theo are great cars. From Norway myself ;-) BTW

Well I was up there with a few friends, who were wery nice and stayed outside and wait. I just sent a ring on phone just before I started and they waited for few minutes and then fully commited themselves on checking every car until mine showed up :).

But yes, there are a few local boys, who are there all the time and take photos and upload them on the web. You can usually search their database of photos through your license plate number. And if you're lucky ... tadaaa :)

Hey there fellow norwegian :)

Yes, Theo's cars are great. My first time was back in 2009 and the Scirrocco was considered as a sort of entry level car, don't think rent4ring exicisted then. When I came back in 2010, we noticed that the Swift was a popular car to rent. I imagine that it is a good car to drive around the ring in. Both as a entry level and a budget level :) Did a check among the rental companys then (rent-Racecar, Rent4ring and RSR) and the prices among them are almost the same. I guess it comes down to availebility of the cars.
If you rent at rent-racecar, ask theo to take you around in his car first. That is a great experience :D

When I'm going back, I was thinking of doing a trackday instead of touristenfahrten. Have any of you guys any experience of this ?

I know Theo is quick around there, but I'm not the slowest round there either... ;-) Worn out the tires on some of the Rent4Ring Suzuki and Corsa last summer... their reply was "... we don't make money on you T., but on the average driver, but you are damn good driving comercial for us out there..." they nocked of 50 Euros on the bill also :-D
A bit hard on throttle and over the edge of grip... with a bit 4 wheel drift, but those cars are easy to drive, and the Toyo R888 tires wear quite quick if they get to warm...and I usually get horn and tail too when the haet is on..

I had some passengers with me in my tuned 200SX who was impressed of the car handling at high speed, but as a passenger, you will always feel a bit off, in the hands of a driver whom you know about. When that car was at best, it did go like stink... funny car, but I usually blew the exhaust manifold gaskets after a while..1,5 bar boost press.

When you know the Ring, it will be easier to drive since most of the traffic have to give way for you, and faster traffic will be coming at you at a much slower pace too. Most of the traffic are also newbies, and some few who never should had the chance to enter. I managed to get one biker banned last year. Another thing is pride, to let a 130 BHP Suzuki pass you, driving a GT-R , Ferrari or Porsche....

No1pal: I recommend pistenclub.de for closed trackdays or RCN races

I've been once in my E36 M3. Loads of fun. Want to go back again for sure!

I actually downloaded this clip with (at time) popular downloading software by accident (:dopey:) and it isby far one of the best clips ever. I still have it on my computer and take a look at it sometimes, just to amaze myself again and again. Together with few other clips (also fine rally example - Solberg in Impreza on Ouninpohja stage in Rally Finland ...) it is one of the finest onboard clips ever. 👍

Went to the ring on Sunday ... rain rain rain :(
In the wet it's soooo unbelievable slippery out there :scared:

Chris one question, How is the simulation in GT5 compared to real life? I mean i have a G27 and i always want to know if the feeling in the wheel is accurate compared to real life. Or how can it be for being more realistic? Is it heavy at the time to move the wheel in real life or how is it?

I play rFactor and rFactor 2 and i think it is great because you can feel everything and GT5 is good but physics feels different and not so much accurate.

Tell me if you can i always wondered this...(i drive in real life but not racing cars as you)

Thanks in advance.

I will be at the 24H as well, going 18th of May - 21st of May. I will be "tourist" and staying at the Carusell - Steilstrecke area. Going to the pits before start and before the end of the race on Sunday. Hopefully I will have my racelicense and participate myself soon in the VLN too :-D Need to complete some national racees first before I get the International license. :-D

Leaving on 18th May for Nürburgring :-D 24 H weekend. Partytime at steilstrecke - karusell area during the race :-D

Totally envious of you guys who can drive to the ring...our local track is pathetic...and its the only proper track in this country....:(

the best track that we have in Brazil is interlagos :(

how can you be sad about it. It's one of the very best international circuits in the world, both in layout and location, and it's featured in F1, whereas the nordschleife isn't and probably won't be again.

I normally watch Ring videos that have the camera attached to the roll bar or something. What those videos do not achieve is show you just how bumpy that place is. This, therefore, is among the best onboard videos I have seen of a lap around the Nordschleife ..its amazing how you are thrown about the car. I now understand why it is so challenging and for me that is the one aspect that no race simulator can simulate.

To the guys on this forum ..I have one question. I am planning on a trip to Italy soon and want to come via Germany ..or, specifically, the Nordschleife. My intention was to rent one of those Suzukis as a start. My question is, is the track on GT5 represented accurately enough for the experience to help at the real track? I have no intention of trying a time anywhere under 10 minutes ...maybe even 11. Will the hundreds of laps I have done on the GT5 version help any? Or would you recommend going on one of those taxis first before giving it a shot myself?

Also, I heard it was illegal to take videos of laps. Is this true? How come there are so many onboard videos on YouTube then? And what about this video from Chris? Are the rules different for race cars?

Thanks in advance!

Yes it certainly helps !! But like you said, don't expect to be fast, you will be passed by others ... A LOT.
I've never tried one of those Suzuki's, but from what I heard, they are a blast !!

Yes it's illegal. You're not allowed to use your own camera. But you can rent one there, and after your lap(s) they will check if you haven't recorder any crash(es).

I know, but i would love to have a circuit like nordschleife in Brazil. Brazil is big country and we have space for that, but after senna's death the popularity of racing lowered.

sorry for the bad english

Hands down one of the best video's I've ever watched! The helmet view really brings things into perspective, in terms of how uneven some sections of the track really are - especially the carrousel!

Just out of interest, what is it that you adjust periodically just to the left of the steering wheel? Is it brake balance or something?

Very best of luck to you at the weekend my friend! Will be keeping an eye out for you on the various streams on the web :)

Chris: I wish you all the best and good luck in 24h race. I'll be happy to follow your progress in race on web stream video.

Your onboard video is really great. Especially that ending clip. Scary moment there. Nordschleife bites quickly :). I had one escape too on one of my trips. Glad to say it ended safely. But scared the living hell out of me. Didn't do any laps that day anymore.
