If I had the money
I got NASCAR 08 a few days ago thinking it would be as good as the other ones but was really wrong. I was wondering if anybody else here has had problems with the game. For me it has already froze up my PS3 twice and the handling is horrible.

Wow that sounds really bad, freezing up twice already. But considering it's an EA product that's what we should come to expet of them

EA's effort on the PS3 is pathetic at best. It really gets to me when gamespot.com uses EA games to compare the 360 and PS3 graphics because it's obvious EA gives PS3 the shaft.

I have absoutley no respect for them now. They've ruint glorious franchises like Madden, Need for Speed and NASCAR, which use to be handled by Papyrus. They are either spread out too thin making games every year for every system or they don't care because they know people will buy EA games because of the reputation they HAD built up.

I have boycotted all NASCAR EA games ever since they forced the end of the excellent NASCAR games that Monster Games developed for the PS2, by monopolizing the market by purchasing an exclusive license from NASCAR back in 2002.

Exclusive Licenses = Below Average Games... most of the time.

If EA spent the same amount of money on their game development that they spend on exclusive licenses and marketing, they would likely have some of the best games out there... instead, they copy Microsoft's business strategy of forcing out the competition, such that consumers have very few choices but to purchase their products if they want that type of game.

Now that Peter Moore is in charge of EA's sports division, I doubt that practice will go away any time soon.

While the Nascar games didn't take a dive on the consoles that much (while I enjoyed the MGI games, they were severely lacking in many areas which made the Thunder series much more attractive, and the EA Nascar games were actually quite good while they were under the Thunder name) when compared to, say, Madden; the PC took a monster hit when EA took the games away from Papyrus. Nascar SimRacing was a freefall from what Nascar Racing 2003 Season was.

"NASCAR 08 is a decent racer, but it feels like a classic example of a game where the developer put in limited effort because of the lack of competition"

"NASCAR 08's box touts the fact that EA's NASCAR series is the number one selling NASCAR franchise. Nowhere on the packaging does it tell you that it's the top-selling franchise because it's the only NASCAR franchise. However, the fact that there's no competition is made apparent as soon as you play. It's extremely light on features, online play is lacking, and its visuals do little to take advantage of the power of the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3. NASCAR 08 is a competent racing game, but you can't shake the feeling that it would have been a whole lot better if there had been a competing NASCAR game out there. "

6.0 of 10

This is the case of most EA sports titles these days. I think it's going to take a really bad Madden Title before things change, at least for Madden

"But if you own any NASCAR game from the past few years, you might as well stick with that one. "

Exactly why I play NR2003 from the PC to this day

I just rented this one and must say that I've been very disappointed, even with my ever sinking expectations of EA.

The graphics are nothing special at all, my wife walked in the room and said "I thought you rented this for the PS3?".

The gameplay modes are ok. They got the CTS, National (Busch), and Nextel Cup, but the rosters for the CTS and Busch series are pretty weak, lot's of "fake" drivers. The Chase mode lets you pick you manufacture and paint scheme (1 of 4 choices 👎 ) but no number selection??? Either way, after that you have a series of license tests. Then you can use the licences to do contracts, which are like missions. As you complete the missions, you can win cars. Finally, Once you've won one of each type of car, you can actually go race in a career-type mode.

There's also a race now mode, season mode, Toyota racing mode (more license/mission stuff, but just with Toyota's), and a Badge mode, where you have to meet some objectives, and then you earn a Badge for a particular driver. What struck me as odd, was say you pick Denny Hamlin, you don't have to "be" Denny to fulfill his badge objectives.

With all that said, the thing I disliked the most was the physics & controls. Granted I'm playing this with the sixaxis and not a wheel but I've played several NASCAR games with a controller and had no problems. I probably messed around with the "Sensitivity" and "Responsiveness" settings of the steering controls for 1-1.5 hours before I found something tolerable. Couple that with the physics and It just wasn't all that much fun for me. I had all the driving aids off and it still was terrible. With them on, it's even worse.

It's a shame that EA has ruined so many quality series with their exclusive licensing. I miss the days when Papyrus ruled the NASCAR games and don't get me started on Football games...

I think if EA stopped developing for the 360 first and port craptasticlly to the PS3, the games would be better. Aliasing all over and poor lighting and textures. At least it automatically switches to 720p. Using the DFP is much better than the SIXAXIS. I wish you could pick your favorite driver similar to Madden instead of creating your own.

I do like the ESPN integration like the score ticker and online radio streaming in the background.

Meh, I took out Gordon on turn 4. I'm happy.

Don't blame EA for this, it's all Microsofts work of evil. They have money sacks stored that they've started to hand out now. GTA 4 will have exclusive X360 material, Rockstar idea? Hardly. EA Games looks better on 360 than PS3 even though the PS3 is more powerful, EA decision? I think not. Colin McRae Dirt won't be released for PS3 until next year because of "programming issues", believable? Nope.

Those MS Money Sacks have been travelling around the world lately, i hate to see this but there's nothing to do except boycott X360 and other MS Products. There are many good developers out there being slowed down by an obstacle called Microsoft.

Nevermind the fact that it took three Maddens to get to 60fps on 360, that the PS3 is a lot harder to develop for, that DiRT on PS3 will have 7.1 audio and a more stable framerate and full support for the DFP, G25, etc...

Noooo, MS must be evil!! Boycott them!!1 It's all because of the moneyhats and not because EA is lazy or that the PS3 is a lot more complicated to develop games for!

EA Sports games are ****. Period.

Yeah... I tried it on the 360, laughed, and immediately proceeded to deleted it. I did the same for juiced 2 as well.

Have to admit they do a great job of Nascrap's staple feature of crashing though.

The moneyhats are facts, the rest is speculations. All i'm sure of is that MS pays money to developers to get x360 in the lead, i don't know exactly what they do.

There's definitely moneyhats out there... but they don't involve Madden, DiRT, etc. More like Bioshock exclusivity, the two Capcom games, GTA4 DLC, etc.

Thats the ones they tell us about... who knows what they're up to?

Just thought of this vid, which is kinda off topic.

I do not play the NASCAR series (I personally do not find the idea of turning left...left...left entertaining) but it seems like this is just another one of the franchises that EA is ruining thanks to their laziness. I think it is obvious that EA is not working as hard to improve game franchises when they have no competition, instead they seem to think that it is fine sending almost identical games at consumers over and over again. I guess i am sort of glad I dont play the NASCAR series so I wouldn't be dissapointed.
