Lister Storm V12 Race Car '99 at Infineon Raceway - Stock Car Course

This challenge is obviously meant to cater to the NASCAR fans on GTP, but I think it's a fun race for anyone. 👍 Of course, it's a little odd having a British car supposedly representing a NASCAR vehicle, but it had very good power and weight approximations to the real thing. I got the idea from EDK, who posted this race a few months ago (I hope you don't mind me using it :scared:). I came to wonder, what is the lap record for a NASCAR Sprint Cup car (more specifically, the Car of Tomorrow) at Infineon? Well, a tiny bit of research on nascar.com turned up Jamie McMurray's 2007 pole-winning lap of 1'17.521. The idea for this race is to see how you compare with this lap, using my setup for the car, given here:

*Go into GT Mode and get in the Lister Storm V12 Race Car '99.
*Go to the Lister Tune Shop, and buy a Stage 4 turbo and Sports Hard tires. It sounds crazy, but racing tires in GT4 are unrealistically grippy, and sports tires stock to the road pretty well on race cars.
*Go to GT Auto and change the oil.
*Select Infineon Raceway - Stock Car Course and choose Practice.
*Go into Settings (the power in the top right-hand corner should read 884 HP, although that unit is actually in PS, making the actual power about 872 HP), and change the following settings: Downforce to minimum, 200 units of ballast set at balance 0 (the car should weigh 1638 kg), and transmission set to use only four gears. All aids must be set at 0. All other adjustable parts are free to set up how you like.

The idea is to match the NASCAR car as closely as possible: according to Wikipedia, the real thing has about 865 HP, weighs around 1656 kg with driver and fuel, has a four-speed manual transmission, and has an FR drivetrain. As you can see, the Lister is not far off, and the only question is the grip of the tires. By lap times, the S1s are quite close.

I'm going to modify the standard OLR rules slightly for this challenge: please keep all four tires on the tracks or rumble strips at all times. You don't see real NASCAR drivers putting wheels on the grass, do you? :trouble: The right-hander after T1 may not be cut on the inside (all four wheels on or to the left of the huge rumble strip), but you are free to go as far as you like to the outside on exit. Of course, no wall touches, as usual.

So, once you've read through that rather intimidating block of text, go out there, have fun, and post your lap time here! :) This car is a challenging drive, with a lot of wheelspin, but who ever said that Sprint Cup cars handled well? :sly: I think it's very fun, though, with a slight balance toward oversteer that will keep you on your toes but at the same time not be too hair-raising to keep on the track. Again, enjoy yourselves. 👍

Well, I don't see a ™ on your thread title, so I think I have the right to use it. :p Would you like me to add "(Round 2)" to the title? ;) And I actually did already have a link to your race in the first post:

For the record, my best time so far is 1'17.111.

It's no problem, a cool concept, and you researched it a little further than I did. 👍

That car on S1's would be a definite handful. :scared:

No, I thought you were joking, just wanted to make sure. 👍

I thought that with the pretty picture at the top, more people would be attracted to this. :dopey: I guess "NASCAR" being in the thread title, coupled with the combo's difficulty, is deterring people. Oh well. My new best time is 1'16.555 (weird coincidence to get two .aaa times in a row!), and I can't seem to match it anymore.

You just had to beat me, didn't you? :p I assume you played around with the suspension and LSD a bit? I just left mine stock. Regardless, great time, and I guess two times merits a leaderboard in the first post. 👍

Car is extremely heavy. Duh! Put in 15 laps. After the initial loafers on the ice feeling I got used to the car and track. Hell, my wheels don't spin this much when I'm stuck in a snow ditch! Am going to play with trans settings. Anyone recommend a preset? Had previously just memorized the other Infineon track in the tests and missions. Used the extra track on the top corners. Best I could get was 1:21.89. But I drive AT. I know. Drive MT it's faster. Working on it.

Best part: Sitting back afterwards and watching B-Spec Bob slide all over at every turn. Couldn't turn in faster than a 1:29.00. My B Spec # are 99, 90, 89 and 9200 I think.

This is crazy... you get lag then a sudden rush in power and wheelspin. I'm assuming all the 1'17 guys have wheels and pedals to control the spinning... I'm on a friggin controller!

Exactly - that's the idea. NASCAR cars are far from the easiest to control, and it's supposed to be a challenge. And actually, I and stidriver, and I'm guessing Mark Bodnar too, are all using regular old DS2s. With lots of practice on them, you become quite adept at controlling wheelspin and finding braking and turn-in points. Try not to be intimidated by stidriver's time, because all of us in this thread are GT4 veterans and have had a ton of practice handling difficult cars. Just do your best and post your time here; we all recognize that just finishing a clean lap is an accomplishment in itself. :)

I did something like this on Forza 2 It worked a TON better, I had camaros, mustangs and chargers all tuned to only 4 gears all motor and full body kit. It was amazing how well the cars stuck together in the draft and never pulled away. I hope to start something like this in GT5.

Got sidetracked last week. Decided to enter the GTPLMS long race series and get my a** kicked for the next 6 races by Austin343 LOL. Ah, to be young and skinny again. About the 4 gears. Let me play stupid. How do I do it? Have changed the presets and done the tranny trick in the past but not this. Is there a thread somewhere so you guys don't have to waste your time typing it to me

Yup, DS2 and AT. Once you get the car going just slight changes. Not unlike The Superbird mission 14 but more wheelspin. If you're not careful spin city like the Lancia Stratos in mission 15.

Hi Mark Bodnar.

Please don't double post in threads (Make a new post when you were the last one to post). Use the edit button.

I've merged your 2 most recent posts, which were made a few minutes apart from one another.

About the 4 gears. Let me play stupid. How do I do it?

I'm sorry about making this request for the setup of the car - I've now confused two people with that statement. All it means is that, since NASCAR cars have only four-speed transmissions, you should set up the transmission on this car to act the same, and use only gears 1-4. In other words, in the Settings menu, go to the wrench icon next to the fully customizable transmission, and adjust either the autoset or the individual gear ratios so that you or the AT never have to change into fifth or sixth gear when you're doing your laps. If I remember correctly, the stock gear ratios of this car need to be lengthened slightly to achieve that. I hope that makes sense; for some reason, it's surprisingly difficult to explain clearly. :boggled:

Watched the race today at Infineon. Much more enjoyable when you have first hand(sorta) experience driving on the track.

Well now, we'll have NASCAR in GT5 so no need to worry!

I know this is a somewhat old thread, but I am curious about something. Are the NASCAR four speeds the standard 1:1 ratio like most production four speeds? Or are they of a higher gearing?

I will give this a moment of gearing and then testing.
I assume that I am allowed to customise the gears only and the rest shoul be left like Austin343 has described.

Actually, you're allowed to change everything to your taste (suspension, brake balance, etc.), except for the settings I require for the downforce, the ballast, and the driving aids, and the requirement that you only use four gears. MEJ, I know very little about the gears in NASCAR except for the fact that there are only four of them.

I just got done searching, the final drive gear in a stock car is always 1:1. They use a very close ratio gear box. (1.86, 1.59, 1.17, 1:1) At least that is what I found. I got tired of searching through pages of useless crap and finally happened upon that info. The final driver gear is set based on the track they are racing at. I couldn't find any baseline number.
